Allusions: Students will examine the allusion for the day.

Postcolonial Quickwrite:

Students will respond to writing prompt regarding postcolonial era.

Prompt defines postcolonial era using Said’s definition.

Early on in Heart of Darkness, Marlow says, “The conquest of the earth . .

. is not a pretty thing when you look into it much. What redeems it is the idea only . . . an unselfish belief in the idea” (70) What does

Marlow mean by the “idea”?

What does this wording tell you about his attitude toward European imperialism? Is the “idea” itself suspect in this text, or are human beings incapable of such lofty goals?

Marlow as liberal and racist:

Discuss Marlow as a wellintentioned liberal and a racist, and a man struggling quite consciously with both perspectives. Cite the passage in which Marlow recalls his helmsman who had died (128-

129).

Achebe’s Article:

Provide students an opportunity to begin reading Achebe’s criticism.

Denby Assignment: Assign students the part to summarize.

Photostory Assignment: Students will be given their photostory assignment. The photostory will be due Mon. Nov.12. The class will observe a sample photostory on the web page.

Denby Article Assignment:

Students must read the Denby article and provide a summary of a given position for Mon. They will meet with their peers to develop a wiki of that position on Mon.

Assign Positions to focus upon:

Students will review the handout regarding specific characters to examine in detail.

Peer Review: Students will quickly review one another’s papers for manuscript form.

Final Draft due today: Students will turn in their final drafts.

Short Story Unit I Test Returned:

Students will check for understanding.

Review of Vocabulary: Students will review their vocabulary words by creating flash cards.

Study for a vocabulary test which will be given on Wednesday.

Assessment

POV Notes and Note-taking

Handout and Instruction: From a lecture format, students will take notes on point-of -view to help them unlock the point of view from the story.

POV Transparencies: Students will look at the scenarios that explains one scenario from multiple points of view to see how the perception is changed depending upon the POV used.

POV Handout - Application of

POV: Students will complete the worksheet that asks them to determine the POV of the short stories in the previous unit.

Vocabulary Test: Students will take a vocabulary test on the words from the next unit.

Syllabus Overview: We will review the main syllabus requirements. They will note some of the similarities from the first unit

(Ex. the story chart) and will also note that they should determine the

POV and the theme for each of the stories in the unit.

Assessment

Pre-Writing: Students will complete a 7 minute writing that will prepare them for the first story of the new unit.

Discuss Responses: We will discuss these responses.

SSR: The students should silently read “The Portable Phonograph”.

Read “The Portable Phonograph” and complete the story chart.

“The Portable Phonograph”:

Reading Quiz: Students will take a 10 point reading comprehension quiz on the story.

Enrichment: Pictures of a phonograph, Moby Dick, the bible, a clip from the film.

Reading and Discussion of

Syllabus Requirements: Students will discuss the setting, characters, and remnants of culture. Students will discuss the story, using the story guide as a guide for the discussion. They will listen to some Gershwin and to some of the other musical selections mentioned.

They will discuss the merits of the belongings that Dr. Jenkins retained and his concern over their safety.

Literary Elements: We will define and apply setting, connotation, denotation and trace them in the story.
