Notes: The current method of raw food production is largely a response to the growth of the fast food industry since the 1950s. The production of food overall has more drastically changed since that time than the several thousand years prior. Controlled primarily by a handful of multinational corporations, the global food production business-with an emphasis on the business--has as its unwritten goals production of large quantities of food at low direct inputs (most often subsidized) resulting in enormous profits, which in turn results in greater control of the global supply of food sources within these few companies. Health and safety (of the food itself, of the animals produced themselves, of the workers on the assembly lines, and of the consumers actually eating the food) are often overlooked by the companies, and are often overlooked by government in an effort to provide cheap food regardless of these negative consequences. Many of the changes are based on advancements in science and technology, but often have negative side effects. The answer that the companies have come up with is to throw more science at the problems to bandage the issues but not the root causes. The global food supply may be in crisis with lack of biodiversity, but can be changed on the demand side of the equation"--Internet movie database. DVD 630.68 Sal Salatin, Joel. Rev. ed. New York: Facts On File, Inc, [2008]. Note: The treatment of animals has become a controversial issue over the years, with many questioning an animal’s fundamental rights. For some, the issue of animal rights is merely an attempt to improve conditions of animals used for clothing, food, and other products, while others believe animals should be granted the same legal rights afforded to humans. This book provides an overview of the history of the animal rights movement and reactions to it, as well as the issues of animal experimentation, conditions on factory farms, laboratory animals, animals in entertainment, hunting, and the actions of those involved in the animal rights debate. New content includes such documents as the Animal Enterprise Terrorism Act of 2006 and contemporary court cases such as Animal Legal Defense Fund v. Glickman. These documents provide both past and present perspectives on the issue and plot a course for future debate about animal rights. An overview essay, capsule biographies, a large annotated bibliography, a chronology of significant events, organization and agency listings, and a glossary make this a first-stop reference to animal rights. 333.76 CHA Chandler, Gary and Graham, Kevin. Note: The Nineteenth Century was a period of tremendous change in the daily lives of the average Americans. Never before had such change occurred so rapidly or and had affected such a broad range of people. And these changes were primarily a result of tremendous advances in science and technology. Many of the technologies that play such an central role in our daily life today were first invented during this great period of innovation--everything from the railroad to the telephone. These inventions were instrumental in the social and cultural developments of the time. The Civil War, Westward Expansion, the expansion and fall of slave culture, the rise of the working and middle classes and changes in gender roles--none of these would have occurred as they did had it not been for the science and technology of the time. Chronicles this relationship between science and technology and the revolutions in the lives of everyday Americans. The volume includes a discussion of: Transportation--from the railroad and steamship to the first automobiles appearing near the end of the century, Communication--including the telegraph, the telephone, and the photograph, Industrialization--how the growing factory system impacted the lives of working men and women, Agriculture--how mechanical devices such as the McCormick reaper and applications of science forever altered how farming was done in the United States, Exploration and navigations--the science and technology of the age was crucial to the expansion of the country that took place in the century. Just what is a contrary farmer? Among other things, one who is not afraid to go against the grain of conventional agricultural wisdom, who does not believe that bigger is always better or that no-till chemically maintained monocultures are superior to crop rotations and diversified farming. 630.68 Sal Salatin, Joel.
