Hayfield Elementary Fourth Grade At-Home Learning Activities Dear Parents and Students, In the event that the school needs to close, the students are to work on and complete the activities below in order to keep up to date with our studies and continue our preparations for the upcoming SOL tests. Beside each subject are key SOL review activities. Below each subject are other activities for your child to complete which also support our curriculum. Social Studies- The students are to continue studying the flashcards in the SOL review packet. There will be quizzes on the cards upon the students return to school. Keep a journal as though you were living in Jamestown, the Revolutionary War, the Civil War, or another relevant time period in Virginia History. Language Arts- The students are to continue to read for at least 30 minutes a day and record it on their reading logs. Write a two to three paragraph response about what they are reading each day while they are out of school. Focus on the responses on predictions, connections, visualizations, etc. These logs and the responses will be collected upon the students return to school. Math- The students are to continue to work on their SOL review packets and turn them into their teachers upon return to school. Find angles in your house and label them as obtuse, acute or right angles. Think of a survey question. (For example: What is your favorite ___________? What month were you born in? Where were you born? How many brothers and sisters do you have?). Collect your data by asking this question to several people. Create a graph to show the data. Choose a favorite family recipe that has at least seven ingredients. Show how much is needed for each ingredient if you cut the recipe in half. How much is needed if you double the recipe. Science- Find plants outside your house and draw and identify the important plant parts: pistil, stamen, leaves, petals, stems, roots, etc. Make a chart and record the weather each day. SOL Released Tests: Copies of the Fourth Grade SOL released tests can be found at the two web sites on the following page. Just click on the appropriate fourth grade test and print it out. Have your child sit down in a quiet area to complete the test independently. When your child is finished, they can then bring it to you to score. (The answers will also print out when you print the test.) You may then review your child’s answers with them. Have your child bring in any completed tests to school upon their return so that his/her teacher can also review the results. 2007 – (The reading and math SOLs were already completed in school, but the history SOL is here.) http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Assessment/Release2007/in dex.html 2008http://www.doe.virginia.gov/VDOE/Assessment/Release2008/ Other SOL Review Websites: It is recommended that the students complete one activity a day in each of the core subject areas of the first website listed below.
