Welcome to English 11! I will be helping you through a very important semester! Besides studying
American Literature, you will be required to take the reading and writing SOLs! IF you are taking a
semester class, the first six to seven weeks will be heavily concentrated in writing, research, and
grammar. We will also review the chronological study of American literature, which will assist in
preparing you for the reading SOL Students will be expected to read independently, write essays,
increase vocabulary, and actively participate in class. Students in the semester course will take the
writing SOL in October and students in the year-long course will take the writing SOL in March.
****Please note: Students MUST pass both the reading and writing SOLS in order to graduate with a
standard diploma. Students will NOT be considered a senior until they pass these tests. If a student
passes the class and does not pass the SOLS, they will have to attend two to four weeks of summer school
to be allowed to take the tests again. Some students may be asked to take an alternative test called
Workkeys. This test will serve to replace the Writing SOL for students who have failed the SOL writing
test.
Textbook: Prentice Hall’s Literature, Sadler’s F Vocabulary, Ten Steps to Advancing College Reading Skills,
6/e. If time persists, students may read a novel.
Materials:
The following materials are to be brought to class daily:
*notebook paper
*blue or black ink pens ONLY
*number 2 pencils
Attendance: Students who attend class regularly tend to be more successful than those who miss multiple
days. Students are allotted 10 unexcused classes or they will fail the course. Part of the course is based
on critical thinking skills and class participation. Missing class discussions are irreplaceable for students
who miss frequently.
Homework: Homework is due at the beginning of class. Work will not be accepted late. If a student is absent
the day an assignment is due, it must be turned in the day the student returns to class. Students with
accommodations must speak to teacher according to their specific IEPs. If possible, students should
email work. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure that computer programs are compatible to the
school computer; otherwise work may be marked late.
In-Class Assignments: If students do not do in-class work, it may result in a failing grade. Students cannot
make up in-class work. It they are present and fail to do the work, they will receive a zero on the
assignment. If students are not in class, they may be asked to do an alternative assignment.
Make Up Policy: Students who are absent from school or classes are responsible for making up work missed
during their absences. Students will be granted one day to make-up work for every day absent, unless
the individual teacher gives permission to extend the time. If this procedure is not followed the teacher
will NOT accept the work. It is the student’s responsibility to get the work from the teacher or other
classmates.
Extra Credit: Extra Credit will not be given. You will have MANY grades and plenty of opportunities to
raise a low grade. If you do your work, no extra credit should be needed.
Grading Scale:
A= 90-100
B= 80-89
C=70-79
D=65-69
Tests/Essays/Projects-60%
Quizzes: 20%
F=64 and below
Class work/Participation: 10%
Homework: 10%
The final exam will count as 20% of your grade. The final exam grade is based on your READING SOL
score- your score will be determined from the FCHS scale- in most cases, students who do poorly will see a
significant drop in their final grade.
First Nine weeks (40%) + Second Nine weeks (40%) + Exam (20%) = Final Grade
Classroom Expectations: Students are expected to follow all school regulations along with classroom rules
given on the first day.
1. Seats are assigned. You will sit in your assigned seat. Please let me know of you need special
considerations with seating.
2. Come to class prepared with all materials every day.
3. Turn work in on time. If you know you are not going to be in school, please turn work in early. If you are
assigned group work, be sure to keep in contact with your partners.
4. Please read the school policy (above) on make-up work. This will be strictly enforced.
5. Respect yourself and others. Be courteous and polite at all times.
6. Be on time to class—there are penalties for being late.
7. Hall passes will be issued on an emergency basis. Time out of class is critical, so try to take care of
personal needs at lunch or between classes.
8. Students should remain seated until dismissed and should remain silent during any announcements.
9. Students must not have cell phones or electronic devices out unless teacher gives permission. Students
will be given ONE WARNING at the start of the semester. After this time, parents will be contacted
and students will receive a referral for each time the phone is in sight during class time.
Teacher Availability: Parents and students should feel free to contact me via email at any time. I will
respond quicker to email than voice mail. Students should seek help through email and/or during
Fluco tutorial. Because I have many students who I tutor, please try to schedule times to see me.
Parents and students should review the curriculum guide located on the school website if they are
interested in the material taught in English 11.
The attached syllabus sheet must be signed and returned as an indication that both
the student and the parent/guardian understand the expectations for the course.
