following key terms. Include an extra detail for each one.

1-Renaissance – A“rebirth” and was a time of interest in art and learning from
classical times.
Extra detail – It was from the 1300-1600’s C.E (after the plague). People were so
happy to have survived the plague that they really wanted to enjoy life.
2- Hoist- Mechanical device used to lift people or materials.
Extra detail -Fillipo Brunnelleschi invented 2 of these when he built the duomo or
dome on the Santa Maria del Fiore.
3-Classical- Ancient Greek and Roman times.
Extra detail – Humanist were fascinated with ideas and designs from the classical
times.
4-Perspective- Art technique used to show depth or distance on a flat surface.
Extra detail - Fillipo Brunnelleschi used perspective when he designed structures like
the duomo.
5-Humanism- A philosophy that had an interest in Roman and Greek culture
and promoted thinking outside the box.
Extra detail – This way of thinking helped to spread learning during the
Renaissance. You could see examples of this in advances in art, architecture,
government, language.

Extra detail - The powerful Medici Family became patrons of the arts in Florence
and spent large amounts of money on art. Michelangelo even lived with this family
for a while.

family.
Extra detail - Florence became a powerful city-state. The powerful Medici Family
ruled there for centuries. Lorenzo the Magnificent ruled Florence for over 20 years.
10-Duomo- Famous 8 sided structure/dome built on a cathedral in Florence.
Extra detail - Fillipo Brunnelleschi studied ancient Roman ruins to get ideas for the
dome. He used math, hoists, and herringbone brick patterns to create it.
11- Cradle of the Renaissance- nickname of Florence, Italy – Renaissance started here
Extra detail – It was the home of many great thinkers and artists during the
Renaissance.
