9/9/08 Arts Council of New Orleans Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding Program FY2009 Grants Grant Activity Period: October 1, 2008 – September 30, 2009 The Arts Council of New Orleans provides critical funding to support arts and cultural activities in Orleans, Jefferson, and Plaquemines Parishes through the Louisiana Decentralized Arts Funding Program. Decentralized grants are made possible by state funding through the Louisiana Division of the Arts, under the Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism. Decentralized funds are allocated to each parish in the state on a per capita basis using the most recent census figures, giving each parish the opportunity to develop arts programming in response to local needs. Orleans Parish Operating Support Grants Anthony Bean Community Theater and Acting School $5,450 To support the presentation of professional-quality theater showcasing the work of African American playwrights and actors; and to support a theater arts training program for youth through a summer camp and after-school sessions. Efforts of Grace $5,950 To support the promotion and presentation of African American art and artists through a multidisciplinary program at the Ashe' Cultural Center which fosters partnerships and collaborations that unite the forces of community development, cultural appreciation and artist support. Friends of WWOZ $7,050 To support WWOZ’s unique community radio programming which celebrates and promotes the cultural heritage and music traditions of New Orleans and the surrounding region through information and through jazz, blues, rhythm and blues, zydeco, gospel, brass band, bluegrass, African, Caribbean, Latin, and Irish music programming. Junebug Productions $4,050 To support the creation and presentation locally and nationally of original theater that explores the African American experience and focuses on the challenge of social change. Komenka Ethnic Dance Ensemble $5,050 To support Komenka Ensemble performances of folk-inspired dance and music from countries throughout the world, and Komenka participation in ballets, festivals, and collaborative productions. Le Petit Theatre du Vieux Carre $5,050 To support Le Petit Theatre's season, including the presentation of main stage plays and musicals and theater productions for young people. Musical Arts Society of New Orleans $5,150 To support the New Orleans International Piano Competition and Keyboard Festival and the New Orleans Piano Institute which together offer a week-long series of concerts, master classes, and lectures attended by the world's leading musicians, music educators and students. FY2009 DECENTRALIZED GRANTS Orleans Parish Operating Support Grants New Orleans African American Museum $4,050 To support exhibitions, educational programming, and cultural events at the museum which showcase and interpret the history, art and culture of African Americans and the African diaspora. New Orleans Children's Chorus $5,350 To support the training and concerts of the New Orleans Children's Chorus, including performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and an annual spring concert. New Orleans Friends of Music $4,250 To support a chamber music concert series featuring performances by nationally and internationally known artists, making world-class chamber music accessible to local audiences. New Orleans Gay Men's Chorus $4,200 To support a series of concerts held at a variety of community events and venues and to support new music commissioned for the Chorus and choral workshops. New Orleans Musica da Camera $4,850 To support a concert series presenting music of the Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods; and to support lectures, publications, and weekly radio broadcasts on WWNO-2 of Continuum, one of the longest-running radio programs devoted to early music. Pirate's Alley Faulkner Society $4,200 To support Words & Music, an annual national writers' conference including master classes, panels, readings, and music and theater events; the national William Faulkner Creative Writing Competition; The Double Dealer literary journal, and year-round readings and special events. Stage to Stage $5,850 To support a performing arts program for children including year-round instruction and the production of musicals for the Crescent City Lights Youth Theater, now housed at the NORD Ty Tracy Theatre in Gallier Hall. Symphony Chorus of New Orleans $3,950 To support Symphony Chorus performances with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and an educational outreach program. Young Audiences $5,950 To support the presentation of arts-in-education programming in schools, community centers, and libraries through performances, workshops, and residencies by a roster of local professional artists. Orleans Parish Operating Support Total - $80,400 -2- FY2009 DECENTRALIZED GRANTS Orleans Parish Project Assistance Grants Administrators of the Tulane Educational Fund $4,500 To support the participation of local artists in the 13th annual New Orleans Dance Festival, a 16day event held in the summer which celebrates African heritage dance and music traditions of New Orleans and the Americas. ArtSpot Productions $4,310 To support the development and premiere on All Saints Day 2009 of three new Saint Plays by Erik Ehn produced through a collaboration with Cripple Creek Theater, Mondo Bizarro, Tulane University and The Porch / 7th Ward Community Center. Rob Cambre $3,780 To support a concert series of improvised and new music featuring local, national, and international artists and held at The Big Top arts center in Central City. Children’s Hospital $4,125 To support a music education and performance series at the hospital for patients and their families including several shows of Delfeayo Marsalis’s “Swinging with the Cool School” and performances by other local musicians. CubaNOLA Arts Collective $3,905 To support the Vecinos Series of concerts and gatherings at neighborhood venues which bring together new Latin American residents and established New Orleans residents for music by international visiting artists and local artists, food, and dancing. Culu Children’s Traditional African Dance Company $2,850 To support an annual conference with workshops and seminars in traditional African dance and drumming and a performance called Kuerr (Home). D’Project, Inc. $3,697 To support Southern Voices, a multimedia dance concert using innovative sound, video, and set design and presenting an array of local dancers and choreographers. DramaRama $2,950 To support DramaRama16, a multidisciplinary performing arts festival showcasing a diversity of local talent through a one-night event of performances throughout the Contemporary Arts Center and a complementary daytime event for children at the Louisiana Children's Museum. Lula Elzy New Orleans Dance Theatre $4,400 To support the Lula Elzy Dance Theatre’s production of Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn's Nutcracker Swing, featuring live performances by the John Mahoney Big Band. GNO Area Chapter 9th & 10th Calvary Association Buffalo Soldiers $3,250 To support artist-led mural projects in two local public high schools, both depicting the Buffalo Soldiers who were established by Congress as the first peacetime all-black regiments in the U.S. Army. GNO-ABO Charitable and Educational Foundation $3,375 To support artist residencies at Pierre Capdeau UNO Charter School and Medard Nelson UNO Charter School with professional storyteller and arts educator Vanora Legaux. International House of Blues Foundation $4,900 To support the Moving Blues SchoolHouse, a program that brings to public schools in Orleans Parish a live, interactive musical performance that traces the evolution of the blues and bluesinspired music. Louisiana Artists Guild $3,950 To support curated exhibitions in three gallery spaces of Louisiana Artworks as part of the Prospect.1 international art biennial taking place November 2008 through mid-January 2009. Mondo Bizarro $4,410 To support the State of the Nation, a bi-monthly series and a multidisciplinary arts festival presenting the work of student, emerging, and professional performing and visual artists from Louisiana and beyond. Monkey Puzzle Productions $4,150 To support the production of a series of radio pieces celebrating the life of the late musician, teacher, writer and griot Danny Barker. Musicians For Music $3,730 To support Ecos Latinos, a monthly arts series presenting local and international Latino musicians, poets, dancers and visual artists at a variety of venues such as Tulane University, Delgado Community College, Orleans public schools and Trinity Episcopal Church. National Performance Network $4,400 To support the Creative Forces Youth Educational Theater Corps’s series of after-school performances and workshops designed to help public school students with their science and math studies. New Orleans Dance Collective $2,950 To support a summer dance program for inner-city youth including master classes with professional dancers and a recital performance for the community. New Orleans Fringe, Inc. $4,060 To support the first New Orleans Fringe Festival featuring comedy, dance, drama, performance art, puppetry, and spoken word to be performed at an array of venues in the Bywater neighborhood. New Orleans Mardi Gras Indian Council $3,700 To support the traditional Super Sunday celebration of Mardi Gras Indian culture including a parade and festival of Indian tribes from across the city with second line clubs, music by local bands, and children’s activities. New Orleans String Project $4,900 To support a free program for inner-city children of weekly after-school music instruction in cello, viola, and string bass; a week-long summer intensive; and outreach performances. NO/AIDS Task Force $2,791 To support the 7th annual Saints and Sinners LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) Literary Festival which takes place in May 2009 at various venues in the French Quarter. NOCCA Institute $2,950 To support NOCCA Riverfront’s Center Stage concert series, its Creative Readings Series, and its On the Edge gallery exhibition series all of which benefit both students and the public. NOLA Playback Theatre $3,880 To support the initial events at Ashe’ Cultural Center and the 7th Ward Neighborhood Center of Red Tent NOLA, a pilot series traveling to New Orleans communities to encourage storysharing performances by women and about women. Press Street $3,950 To support the third annual Drawathon, a 24-hour creative event of continuous drawing activities and workshops led by local artists and open to the public. Timecode NOLA $2,790 To support Timecode:NOLA, a cable television program that showcases and promotes the work of Louisiana independent filmmakers, giving them an opportunity to have their work shown to a regional television audience and a worldwide internet audience. Tsunami Dance Company $4,310 To support the premiere of Migration of Form, a new concert by Tsunami featuring the company’s signature choreographic work which combines innovative, original modern dance and media arts. Uptown Area Senior Adult Ministry $3,810 To support actor training, script development, and touring of the Golden Heart Players, a senior citizen community theater group. Jan Villarubia $4,060 To support the production of Whispering Bones, a community-based, collaborative performance piece examining racism and the role of black domestics in white southern households. Total for Plaquemines Parish - $15,737 The programs of the Arts Council of New Orleans are supported by a grant from the Louisiana Division of the Arts, Office of Cultural Development, Department of Culture, Recreation and Tourism, in cooperation with the Louisiana State Arts Council. Funding is also provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, a Federal Agency.
