16. Clothes and fashion
We wear clothes to alter our appearance or to keep warm and protected. For sport we wear sport kit. When we do
not have anything on we are naked. Nakedness is natural for small babies. Some people walk in their house in
the nude. A nudist is someone who likes being naked. Bare hands and feet are without gloves and socks. Clothes
should never reveal more than is polite and appropriate. Usually we are dressed in clothes that fit the occasion.
We dress for parties or to work in the garden. A set of clothes we wear is an outfit. We dress up for special
occasions. Children dress up for parties and wear a fancy dress or a disguise. If we are dressed to smartly or
formally, we are overdressed. In the morning we get dressed and before a shower we get undressed. We take
our clothes off or strip or we put something on. We change into different clothes all the time. We try on new
clothes in a changing room. We do up or fasten our clothes with buttons, zips or safety pins. We zip up our
jeans and button up our shirts. Sometimes we put on clothes wrongly – back to front or inside out. We wear
odd socks when they do not match.
Costumes are worn by actors or traditional dancers. On our upper part of body we wear sleeveless, long or shortsleeved shirts, blouses, T-shirts, sweaters, pullovers, jumpers, cardigans or sweatshirts. Shirts are worn by
men, blouses by women and they have collars. You put sweaters, pullovers and jumpers over head but you button
up cardigans. A jacket with a skirt or trousers makes up a suit. They can be accompanied by a tie or a bowtie.
Suits and evening dresses are formal clothing. Skirts worn by men are called kilt. Short trousers are called shorts.
Trousers can be jeans, tracksuits bottoms and held by belts or braces. They usually have pockets. Women wear
dresses of many different kinds. Coats keep us warm in winter. Raincoats are waterproof and anoraks usually do
not have hoods. Sportswear is for example a football dress or a jogging suit. There are many accessories that
worn or carried. Belts, gloves, mittens, hats, wrist watches, umbrellas, sunglasses, handbags, shoulderbags and jewellery are inseparable part or our outfits. We cover our heads by woolly hats, caps, headscarf,
straw hats, top hats, baseball caps or helmets. Jewellery includes earrings, rings, brooches, bracelets and
necklaces. They are made of silver, gold and jewels. A pair of glasses consist of a frame and lenses.
Sunglasses protect our eyes from the sunshine and goggles from water, wind or dust. We can by glasses at the
optician’s. Some people wear contact lenses instead. Underwear must be changed more often than the rest of
our clothes. Underpants include pants, briefs, knickers, panties and boxer shorts. Women also wear bras,
tights and stockings. Pyjamas have pyjama top and trousers. Women wear nightdress or nightie for sleeping.
Dressing gown or bathrobes are worn after a bath. For swimming we use swimming costume or trunks.
Pairs of shoes are probably the most used part of clothing. Footwear is important for our comfort and safety. A
shoe has a heel, shoelace, sole sometimes a buckle. Trainers are for sport, shoes are for everyday use, boots are
above ankles for colder weather, slippers are for home use, sandals and slip-on shoes for summer and gym shoes
for inside sport. Shoes can be made of leather. We put on and take off our shoes which means we are barefoot.
Shoes made by shoemakers can be bought at a shoe shop. They must be our size so they fit. We must take good
care of our shoes by cleaning them, brushing and polishing them or taking them to a shoe repair shop.
We spend most or our time in working clothes. We wear uniforms, protective clothing, aprons and overalls.
We buy clothes in clothes shops or boutiques. They must be the right size so they fit us. They should not be too
tight or loose. Children can grow into clothes. The colour and material should match and go with the rest of what
we want to wear. Some clothes really suit us and make us look good. Some people dress well, some badly,
sometimes casually or formally, some smart or scruffy, others elegant and fashionable. Old clothes are shabby
and worn. We take care of our clothes too. They hand on a hanger or we fold them and put in the wardrobe or a
chest of drawers, we wash them, iron them, brush them and repair them. We must follow the instructions on the
labels. Sometimes they must be washed by hand, be dry cleaned. Clothes can shrink and some stains need stain
removers. Clothes of different colours must be washed separately. White ones can be bleached. Local laundrette
can help us if uncertain. Clothes are made of different materials, also called fabric, produced by textile industry.
Natural fabrics are for example silk, cotton and wool but synthetic are stronger. Woollen jumpers are warm.
One of the most expensive materials is cashmere. Polyester and nylon are man-made materials. Cloth can have
different colours and patterns. The most used are floral, striped, check, spotted or tartan patterns. Cloth can be
soft, rough or elastic. A person who makes clothes is a dressmaker, a tailor or dress designer. They take the
measurements of our height, waist, hips and sleeves and sew for us.
Different age groups consider different clothes appropriate for their age. Everyone has a unique style and taste
and responds to fashion individually. There are trends that try to tell us what is fashionable and what is out of
fashion. A hairstyle can catch on and then become old-fashioned. What was not acceptable in the past is hot now.
Women wearing trousers, short skirts and high-heeled shoes are examples of this. Stylish, trendy and
fashionable clothes are more expensive. Models walk on catwalks and show us the latest pieces by well-known
designers during fashion shows. Women like to watch them and follow new fashion trends but can rarely afford
to buy the extravagant ones. Some people spend fortune on brand name clothes. Most people, however, wait for
sales or have their clothes made. Choosing clothes has also something to do with our self-expression. It can
express our personality, mood, attitudes or interests. Warm and cold colours have both symbolic meanings in
many cultures. Some colours are thought to be girlish. Blue for boys and pink for girls. Clothes not only protect us
from weather elements but in hot weather should be breathable, absorb sweat and not cause allergic reaction.
Clothes can also visually change the shape of our body. People protecting animal rights are against killing animals
to provide fur for coats.
Hair and hairstyle is inseparable part of our appearance. Men grow beard, moustache, and sideboards or are
clean-shaven. We can have straight, wavy or curly hair. Colour of hair can be fair, dark, blond, brunette, ginger
or red. Men usually keep short hair and women medium length or long. Hairdressers and barbers take care of our
hair. Different cuts and haircuts catch on but the hair grows and can be rearranged. Girls like wearing tied hair,
plaits, ponytails and ribbons, hair-slides or hairpins in their hair.
What is fashion ?
For centuries, individuals or societies have used clothes and other body adornments as a form of nonverbal
communication to indicate occupation, rank, gender, sexual availability, locality, class, wealth and group affiliation.
Fashion is a form of free speech. It not only embraces clothing, but also accessories jewellery, hairstyles, beauty
and body art. What we wear and how and when we wear it, provides others with shorthand to subtly read the
surface of a social situation.
Fashion is also a language of signs, symbols and iconography that non-verbally communicate meanings about
individuals and groups. Fashion in all its forms from tattoos and body piercing, to the newest hairstyle, is the best
form of iconography we have to express individual identity. It enables us to make ourselves understood with rapid
comprehension by onlookers.
People have different attitudes to fashion. Some don’t care what they wear, others, especially women, spend a
lot of money on clothes. Some people buy ready-made clothes, others prefer to have them made to measure
or buy them at second-hand shops. Some have excellent taste in dress and are always dressed perfectly,
others are slovenly in dress. There are some people who want to be dressed according to the latest fashion. It
seems that it is a hobby for them to follow the fashion magazines. The perfect outfit is not only achieved
through clothes. Hair is another important part of our image. Nowadays, we have a great freedom in hairstyles
and colours. Many people grow their hair long, have highlights done, while others have very short, spiky and
often dyed hair. Fashion concerns also make-up, and accessories, such as shoes, handbags, gloves, belts,
hats, scarves or jewellery and glasses.
Fashion history
Styles, cuts, designs and particularly the length of clothes change very quickly because dressmaking has become
big business nowadays. Fashion often revert to older styles, what is out of fashion, funny or ridiculous now, may
look romantic a few decades later. But the fashions never repeat themselves quite in the same way.
Different factors which have influenced the styles of clothing such as geography, climate, poverty and wealth
have played their role. Clothes have always been important for people. Clothes were important in the past
mainly because they protected people against cold or rain. The first kinds of clothing were made of animal
skin and different types of furs. This method was used for years and it was working. However, because they
were using fur, the cases of lice were growing so they started finding other materials to use. As time went by,
people got smarter when it came to making clothes. They made the cloth lighter and didn’t use as much
animal skin. They used the bark and fiber off trees. To get it soft, they pounded it really hard and soon it
became like pieces of cloth. They would sew these small squares together and this would create cloths that
they could dye and decorate.
Later with the development of society clothes became an important sign of people‘s social status. The
revolution in clothing began in the half of the 19th century with the start of the industrial revolution and the
invention of the sewing machine that led to the mass production of clothes. Styles, cuts, designs and length
of clothes have changed very quickly. Dressmaking has become big business. It’s a big business today.
Fashion designers, models, managers and dress-makers make lot of money of clothing industry. Today
the fashion is changing faster than before. One style is almost every year replaced by other style. Fashion
often returns to older styles; what was a number one for twenty years could also be in today.
In previous centuries women’s and men’s clothes were totally different and one could recognize a person’s sex
from a distance. Women wore long skirts, long-sleeved dresses, long hair and even veils, so much of their body was
concealed. Men’s clothes did not differ very much from today’s time – men wore trousers, shirts and jackets as they
do now.
In the 20th century people’s clothing changed rapidly. The 2 sexes now have more in common and it may be quite
difficult to distinguish a person’s sex from a distance because hair is very often the same length, trousers have
became a necessary part of women’s wardrobes and men wear scarves, earrings and other fashion accessories. In the
1960s women started to shorten their skirts and mini-skirts were very popular for a long period. Narrow trousers
were replaced by wide trousers, and flat whose by high-heeled shoes.
Choice of clothing
On special occasions we like to be dressed properly. When we go to a concert or to the theatre we prefer to be
dressed up. We wear an evening dress, which consists of a dark suit, a light shirt and a tie or a bow tie,
sometimes a dinner jacket, an evening gown, court shoes and pumps. For sports we put on sports wear,
such as jeans, shorts, T-shirts, blazers, parkas, track suits and to the mountains a waterproof jacket or
anorak and sports shoes (trainers, plimsolls, heavy boots or skishoes). At home we like to feel comfortable,
and so we prefer leisure wear – slacks, jeans and T-shirts and on our feet slippers or mules. To school we
wear something practical and plain. We do not wear uniforms in the school as it is normal in Britain. Uniform
usually consists of dark coloured skirt or trousers, white shirt and cravat. I think that it would clean the
differences between a rich child and a poor child but it has some disadvantages too.
Disadvantages of school uniforms:
1.) Kids can't show their individuality or self expression which may lead them to try other ways to show their
individuality, like too much make-up or jewellery.
2.) It may be harder to recognize where a certain kid is located in a crowd because they are all dressed the
same.
3.) They have to wear the same colours everyday and this may bore them.
4.) The uniforms have no value once they are out of the school.
5.) Some children may be uncomfortable wearing uniforms which may affect their learning.
I have mentioned only one advantage but there are also others:
1.) Kids don't have to impress their friends or by wearing name brand clothes.
2.) Kids will not get made fun of it their family cannot afford name brand clothes which also decreases violence
in the schools.
3.) Wearing a uniform gets the kids ready for the job market, because at a job they might have to wear a
uniform or dress up and this gets them accustomed to this. Also, they see their parents dress clothes for work
and may take learning more seriously.
4.) Parents don't have to spend a whole bunch of money for new clothes before each school year.
5.) Kids are better able to focus more on learning than what their friends or they themselves are wearing.
6.) They have to get used to following a rule.
7.) It is a known fact that students who wear uniforms perform better academically.
8.) Promotes good discipline.
9.) Saves time in the morning because the kid already knows what they are wearing.
10.) It shows school spirit.
The most favourite wear of teenagers include trousers, shirts and T-shirts of different colours, sweatshirts or
pullovers and trainers. The most popular clothes among the young are jeans. Different styles and cuts of jeans
have been worn by generation after generation.
Most people buy ready-made clothes if they have no problem to find what they want to wear. It´s
easy, quick but sometimes expensive. Some people whose figure is not average e. g. they are too thin, too fat,
they have too short of long limbs, may have problems to find suitable clothes so they can buy a ready- made
piece and get it tailored (to shorten, to lengthen, to take in or to widen). Or they can go to a tailor or a
dressmaker to have the clothes tailored to their needs. So the tailor takes measures of a person´s body, cuts the
cloth and then he sews. We must go for fittings several times until it is ready. When it is prepared and you are
satisfied you pay for the work. We can go the tailor or dressmaker also in the situations when we want
something special e. g. an evening dress or a suit, that we can´t find in the clothes shops or when we want to
become different and have something original.
People working in banks, and offices are usually more dressed up:
-men in suits, shirts in different colours, ties and suitable shoes, mostly black or brown leather.
- women wear suits too, fashionable tops of blouses, various accessories and leather shoes (usually pumps).
For special occasion e. g. special dinner, we usually put on something more formal: long dresses or gowns for
the ladies; and tuxedos, dinner jackets, bowties and patent leather shoes for the men. Official ceremonies
require that people wear gowns or robes, long looses usually black outer garments worn by judges, lawyers,
and members of universities. Not only special occasions require special clothes. Professionals such as police, the
armed forces, health workers, workers of a certain firm wear uniforms.
A person´s choice of suitable clothing is also influenced by climate and weather.
Summer clothing
When it´s hot, everyone feels better in clothes which are light and airy. But when it´s raining, the best thing to
wear is a long raincoat. In summer we wear light summer dresses, loose blouses with a low neckline and skirts
gathered at the waist or bell-shaped, cropped trousers, shorts or Bermuda shorts and various T-shirts, and
sandals, slippers or plimsolls. When we go swimming we put on a swimming costume (bikini, one-pice or twopiece) or trunks, sometimes a beach gown and a straw hat.
Winter clothing
In winter we need to wear something warm – suits, trousers, jeans, woollies, cardigans, polo neck sweaters,
jumpers, anoraks and parkas, winter coats and jackets, sometimes even a fur coat, gloves and mittens, caps,
hoods, hats, scarves and mufflers and boots of course.
Women´s clothing
Women are very choosy and spend a lot of money on clothes. The most common wear for women are blouses, Tshirts, skirts, dresses, trousers, jeans, stockings and tights, jackets, anoraks, mittens or gloves and scarves.
Ladies carry a handbag in which can be found a handkerchief, a mirror, a lipstick, a coin purse, keys and a
mobile phone.
Men´s clothing
Men usually wear jeans or trousers, shirts and pullovers or sweaters and on cold days they wear an anorak, a
winter coat, gloves, and scarves. Men don´t have many decorative items, maybe a tie or bow tie and a belt.
Branded clothes
Some people find it very important to wear expensive brands of clothes. But what may be even more important
is that everyone should find his/her own style. In other words, you should know what looks good on you,
which colour and cut goes with your figure, what colours and parts of clothes can be combined. But the main
thing is that you are happy about what you wear and feel comfortable. Brand-name products give some
children a sense of identity and help them fit in with a peer group. They like to be dressed in labels mainly
sports items like Nike, Adidas, Reebok. They think that if they have the wrong brand they will be excluded from
the group. Therefore they nag their parents until they buy them what they want. For some people, brand-name
products are not important and they choose their clothing according to the material, usefulness, comfort and
their feelings.
Judging people by their clothing
One of the first impressions you get about someone is how they look- their clothes, shoes, hair etc... And, even
if you claim it doesn’t this always affect your judgment about people. It shouldn’t be that way, but it is.
Although we know that we should not judge a book by its cover, we still do it and we judge people by how
they present themselves in public. We often show more respect to people who dress impeccably than to people
not dressed according the latest fashion. However, in this impression, we tend to
treat people badly and so we
tend to lose our potential good friends, employees or customers. You may hear the sentence about "Anyone
should not judge people by external appearances". This statement is correct because what you see may not
be real or may not be as you think people will be and their actions are.
Sometimes what you see may not be real or may not be as you think it will be. People in nice clothes can be bad
or criminals and people with poor clothes may be good. In order to have a fair perception of a person we must
take time and get to know the person’s character and the various reasons for doing one thing over the other to
get a true understanding of a person. As I said, we all know we shouldn't judge people just by how they look. I
admit that I do judge people on first impressions. However, if it is a bad impression, I will generally try to get to
know the person better so that I can prove my first impression wrong.

Fashion trends, fashion designers
Fashion is the way of dressing that is popular at certain time. It is the main concern of all people who want to be “in”.
Fashion changes very fast and sometimes it is quite difficult to say what is still trendy or what is already out of
fashion. People can follow new fashion trends through fashion magazines, such as Cosmopolitan, Elle, Vogue or
from fashion shows.
Fashion is created by professionals called fashion designers. They invent new styles, patterns and look for next,
interesting combinations. Names, such as Calvin Klein, Gianni Versace, Giorrgo Armani, Emanuel Ungaro, Vivienne
Westwood, are known all over the world. New models are presented at fashion shows and inspired many fashionlovers.

Different attitudes to fashion
People’s attitudes towards fashion are quite different. Some people care a lot about themselves. They are willing to
spend a fortune on clothes in brand name clothes shops and boutiques often called after fashion designers of
famous people. On the other hand, there are people who are not interested in fashion at all. They wear clothes
according to their own taste and their own style. Finally, there are those who want to be “in” but cannot afford to buy
expensive and brand name clothes. Therefore, they buy imitations or cheaper clothes in markets or in secondhand
shops. Sometimes, it is worth waiting for good sales which are often after Christmas and in summer.

Fashion in Slovakia in the past, something about sewing and tailors
A few years ago, the possibilities to follow fashion were quite limited in Slovakia. Shops were only selling a few
models. Therefore, many women sewed the clothes themselves. Nowadays, people prefer ready-made clothes
instead of making them or having them made by tailors and dressmakers. If women want to have a unique dress
for a special occasion, such as a ball, they often go to dressmakers and have their dress made. Men often have
their suits or coats made. Some people go to tailors to have their old clothes repaired or adjusted to the latest
fashion. Tailors take measurements of the entire body: waist, hips, sleeves and bust. Customers choose the cut,
design, material and a pattern of cloth. Before the clothes are ready, customers must try them on a few times so
that they fit perfectly. The finest tailors can charge you a lot of money for designing and sewing.

Considering people according to clothes, clothes as expression of faith
The old saying that “Clothes make the man” is very true in the sense that clothes reveal people´s origin, religion
and even financial situation. They indicate their status in society.
In some religions, the way of dressing is one of the signs of faith. Islamic women have to wear long, dark clothes and
veils to cover their whole body. Men are expected to wear a tunic. Another example is the Amish population in
Lancaster County, USA. They follow a set of unwritten rules that prescribe behavior, appearance and other aspects
of their culture. Their style of dress is symbolic of their socks and shoes and black or straw hats. Amish women wear
modest dresses made from single-coloured fabric. The dresses are usually made with long sleeves and a full skirt
and covered with a cape and apron. Their hair is never cut but is worn in a bun on the back of the head. Amish
women are not permitted to wear jewellery or printed fabric.
Such limitations would mean total disaster for the modern man and woman. If we all got dressed in the same way in
accordance with some rules, fashion would never develop and most fashion designers would become jobless.

Young people and fashion
Fashion is also a way of self-expression, especially for young people. They can show their mood, interests, attitudes
and status in society through styles, colours, patterns, materials and accessories. For others it is a need to copy
their ideal model by imitating his/her appearance. The young often experiment with different combinations of
colours and designs to show their freedom, beliefs and feelings. Some of them are very inventive and they can even
inspire professional designers with their extraordinary excesses.
The most popular clothes among the young are jeans. Different styles and cuts have been worn by generation after
generation. Casual clothes, such as baggy trousers, loose sweatshirts and baseball caps (usually back to front),
are still very popular. Sports clothes like tracksuits and sneakers have also been fashionable among the young.
Brand-name products give some children a sense of identity and help them fit in with a peer group. They like to be
dresses in labels mainly sports items like Nike, Adidas, Reebok. They think that if they have the wrong brand they will
be excluded from the group. Therefore they nag their parents until they buy them what they want.
Big companies like to say how they promote education, sports and other social activities but what they are really
doing is going after the consumers´ market wherever they can. They like to promote their products supporting
famous sportsmen, actors, celebrities.

The way of clothing according to different weather and occasions
The way we dress is undisputedly connected with the weather. In summer, we all prefer light and airy materials,
such as cotton, silk. We wear short-sleeved or sleeveless shirts, T-shirts, loose blouses with a low neckline and
skirts gathered at the waist or bell-shaped trousers, shorts or Bermuda shorts, sandals and slippers. Flip-flops
have recently become the biggest fashion trend. When we go swimming, we wear a swimming costume (bikini,
one-piece or two-piece) or trunks, sometimes a beach gown and a straw hat. In winter, warmer materials, such as
cotton, wool and nylon are preferred. Long-sleeved T-shirts, shirts, sweaters, jumpers, pullovers, cardigans,
polo necks, jackets, anoraks, coats, mittens, gloves, hats, caps, scarves and boots are worn.
People dress differently for various occasions. You cannot wear the same jumper to a football match and to a theatre.
Formal situations, such as public parties, balls ad banquets require formal, smart clothes. Women take special
care of being dressed up and looking good at such occasions. Some of them are willing to spend a lot of money on
unique all dresses, shoes, accessories, decorative items and jewellery /necklace, bracelet, earrings, rings).
Ladies´ handbags should match their dresses and shoes. Gentlemen are expected to wear a dark suit or tuxedo, a
white shirt with cuff links, a single colour bow tie and dark shoes.
Not only special occasions require special clothes. In some jobs people wear uniforms, white coats, costumes,
aprons.
To school we wear something practical and comfortable. The most favourite clothes of teenagers includes jeans or
trousers, shirts, pullowers and trainers. Special kinds of clothes are uniforms and costumes. They are often hated by
children, especially by girls. The main reason for wearing them is to hide social and financial differences among
children.
In some professions carefully and thoughtfully chosen clothing can lend powerful support to our physical presence.
Some people when they are doing something important they wear clothes they like and that makes them feel good. If
clothes put them in a positive mood, chances are they will work more effectively. On certain occasions the key factor
is following the prevailing political dictates regarding clothing choice. Sometimes it is very important to ask
someone who can help people work out a dress approach that fits on certain occasions. Some recommendations for
business say people should dress well, but their clothing should not call attention to itself.
For sports we put on sport’s wear like jeans and T-shirts blazers, a waterproof jacket or anorak and sport’s shoes.
At home we like to feel comfortably and so we prefer comfortable clothes – slacks, jeans, T-shirts and on our feet
slippers.

Hairstyle
The prefect outfit of a person is not only achieved through clothes and accessories. Another important part of our
image is hair. Nowadays, there is a great freedom in hairstyles and colours. Some people grow their long, have
highlights done, while others have their hair very short, spiky and often dyed, highlighted or bleached.

The care of clothes
All clothes require special care if we want to wear them for a longer time. Therefore, we should follow the washing
and ironing instructions on the clothes labels. Some clothes wash easily, others require dry cleaning or must be
washed only by hand. If they are washed in a washing machine on a high temperature, they can shrink or become
larger. Greasy stains can be shaded with stain removers. The worst happens when coloured clothes are washed
together with white ones. If we are not sure how to care about certain clothes, the best thing to do is go to a local
launderette and have them washed and ironed there.
