CHINESE CHARACTERS
For each lesson, students will learn new characters (approximately 30-40 per lesson). In order to memorize
characters, some of your homework will include writing out each character a specified number of times. However,
in order to really memorize the characters, I suggest you write them out at least 12 times, at least 4 times per week.
In addition, you may choose to make flashcards to learn characters.
QUIZZES
1. 听写 (Ting1 Xie3) Dictation Quiz: The teacher reads a sentence and students write the sentence in
characters and/or Pinyin. Sentences are given to students 1-2 days in advance. These quizzes are to test
students’ knowledge of new characters with their corresponding pinyin and tones, and grammar.
Previously learned characters will also be included. There will also be a listening component on some of
the dictation quizzes. The quizzes are usually worth 10 points each.
2. Other quizzes: You will be assessed on listening skills via dictation quizzes. You will be assessed on
written skills via tests. For speaking, you will have a participation/effort grade every week also. (See
“grading” section for more information. If students appear to not be keeping up with work, additional
quizzes may be assigned.
Make-up quizzes: When a student is absent, it is the student’s responsibility to find out from the teacher
when s/he should make up the quiz. Since we have a lot of quizzes, it is up to the teacher whether or not a
student will need to make up a quiz. If a student does not miss more than two quizzes per quarter, make-ups
will not be necessary, but are always available if a student wishes to take the missed quiz. There will be NO
make-ups for low grades. However, the lowest quiz grade each quarter will be dropped.
ASSESSMENTS
Each lesson will have two formal assessments. One will be project-based. At the end of each lesson, a lesson
test is also given. The lesson test encompasses all of the characters and vocabulary from the lesson, as well as
characters and vocabulary from previous lessons. The test may have some or all of the following components:
listening, speaking, written and reading comprehension. In the event of a student’s absence on the day of a
test, the student is responsible to make-up the test at a mutually convenient time. For information about
grading of tests, see the “grading” section.
HONOR PRINCIPLE
All quizzes and tests (including take-home tests) must be done individually, without assistance of any kind
and without reference to notes, textbooks or any other materials, unless approved or assigned by the teacher.
If a student is caught cheating, repercussions will be based on this year’s Student Handbook Rules of
Conduct.
GRADING
Quarter Grade:
 Homework : 15% of quarter grade is determined by the average grade on homework assignments for
the quarter.
 Dictation quizzes: 30% of quarter grade is based on the average grade on dictation quizzes for the
quarter.
 Commitment to Learning: 20% of quarter grade is based on the average grade on “commitment to

Semester Grade: The semester grade is determined by the district for ALL CLASSES. The semester grade is
determined as follows:
 Quarter 1: 40% of the semester grade is the quarter 1 grade.
 Quarter 2: 40% of the semester grade is the quarter 2 grade.
 Exam 1: 20% of the semester grade is the midterm exam grade.
 Semester 2: Semester 2 grade is determined the same way as semester 1: 40% quarter 3; 40% quarter 4:
20% final exam grade.
STANDARD AND HONORS CURRICULUM DIFFERENTIATION
Chinese III standard and honors students are in combined classes. The following are examples of some of the
methods by which the curriculum is differentiated for the two levels:
 Students work in small groups. Instructor and/or teaching assistant (TA) rotates amongst groups.
 Students are taught as a whole class, with different expectations for answering questions, number of
characters that are recognized, etc.
 Students are taught separately. While Chinese III standard is working on a lesson with the instructor,
Chinese III honors works independently on a separate assignment and vice-versa.
 Assessments (tests, quizzes, projects, etc.) are graded based on separate expectations and/or rubrics. For
example, on a dictation quiz, honors students may be required to memorize 2-4 sentences while standard
students are required to memorize 1 or 2.
