GRADUATION REQUIREMENT
Remember that computer literacy, although no longer a liberal studies
requirement, IS a graduation requirement. You can take one of the
following: CGS 2060, CGS 2064, CGS 2100 or ISC 3313 to satisfy
this 3-hr rule. NOTE: Computer exemption exams are no longer
offered at FSU.

LANGUAGE REQUIREMENT
The successful completion of SPN 2220 or the equivalent is required for
students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree, with a major in
other areas of the College of Arts and Sciences, and with selected majors
in other colleges. Students with no prior experience in Spanish can
fulfill this requirement by taking SPN 1120, SPN 1121 (4 hrs each) and
SPN 2220 (4hrs); or - SPN 1124 (4hrs) and SPN 2220 (4hrs). A C- is
required in each course before advancing to the next level.
EXEMPTION AND PLACEMENT
SPAIN PROGRAM
The Department and the university sponsor programs each
summer, fall and spring in Spain for university credit. All
participants must have the equivalent of at least one year of college
Spanish. See your advisor for further information.
A student who has received credit for any college-level Spanish must
continue the sequence at Florida State University through SPN 2220, in
order to fulfill the language requirement. A student who has taken
Spanish in high school and has never enrolled in any college-level
Spanish may exempt the first levels of college Spanish by exam.
MANDATORY PLACEMENT TEST
All students who are taking their first FSU course in Spanish in the
Spring semester 2004 or later are required to take a free placement test
(unless the student has NO prior experience with the language or arrives
at FSU with IB, AP or other test credit). The exam may be taken at the
Assessment Services Office, Rm 1200, Bldg C, University Center (850)
644 3017. Non-FSU students will be charged a fee of $12, payable by
money order.
Questions and comments may be directed to:

Native Speakers of Spanish
A general definition of native speaker is one who grew up exposed
to a minority or home language (Spanish) and the majority
language (English). These students should take SPN 3350
(Spanish for Heritage Speakers) instead of SPN 3400, which is
closed to native speakers. This one course will completely satisfy
the 12-hour language requirement. Some courses are closed to
native speakers (note the starred (*) courses on page 7).For any
questions about native or heritage speakers, contact Dr. Roberto
Fernandez at 644-8190.
The Foreign Language Learning Center
The Department’s language laboratories offer state of the art electronic
language learning systems. Students may practice at their convenience
individually (unsupervised) or with their classes under a teacher’s
supervision. The Foreign Language Learning Center possesses a
collection of video materials, and television news from around the world
can be viewed daily on the set or on-line. Students have access to a
state-of-the-art computer lab plus an audio lab.
Students may also determine placement based on the results of the
College Level Examination Program (CLEP) in Spanish.
This exam is optional and can award the student up to 12 hours
college credit
CLEP Exam: Students who have not yet received any college
credit in Spanish may register for this exam through the Office of
Assessment Services, Rm 1200 University Center Bldg C (850)
644-3017. If successful, students may receive up to twelve hours
credit in Spanish. The exam is administered throughout the
calendar year with results available immediately after each
administration. Pre-registration is required of $12 money order or
FSU cash and an exam fee of $80 money order or credit card.
Students must NOT have received any prior college-level Spanish
credit, NOR be enrolled in any Spanish course before the CLEP
exam is taken.
$$$ SCHOLARSHIPS $$$
The Department offers a number of scholarships in varying amounts to
be used by students in an accredited school of their choice for the
summer terms. Applications are available on the Department’s website
each September for use the following year.
