Vision
The mission of the ASI is to create practical STEM education experiences for Seminole County students through
diverse collaborations among educators, professionals, volunteers and corporate partners to provide ongoing
science outreach opportunities for Seminole County students in K-12, teachers and beyond; increase the
number of students pursuing careers in STEM fields; and help young people understand their connection to the
environment and a sustainable community, and to bolster a technically capable workforce.
Mission
AS2I creates practical STEM education experiences for Seminole County Public Schools students through
diverse collaborations among educators, professionals, volunteers and corporate partners to:





Provide ongoing science outreach opportunities for Seminole County Public Schools students in K-12,
teachers and the community;
Increase the number of students pursuing careers in STEM fields;
Help young people understand their connection to the environment and a sustainable community;
Offer internships to extend the AS2I program and increase the awareness and desire of students to
focus on careers in STEM fields; and
Bolster a technically savvy workforce.

PROGRAM
The Challenge
Technical jobs in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) fields play an instrumental role in
expanding scientific frontiers, developing new products and generating technological progress.
According to industry experts, by 2015, Florida’s workforce will reach a 100,000 person shortfall for “science and
technology professionals.”
The Opportunity
The City of Altamonte Springs, in partnership with Seminole County Public Schools and industry supporters, aims
to address Central Florida’s STEM workforce deficit with the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I).
Building upon the relationships that exist among the City of Altamonte Springs, Seminole County Public Schools,
Seminole State College and the University of Central Florida, coupled with the economic development
expertise of the AS2I Advisory Alliance and the Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the
Incubator will serve as a key feeder program for the Seminole County and Central Florida STEM workforce.

Lake Lotus Park
Lake Lotus Park is the City of Altamonte Springs nature preserve. Total area is approximately 150 acres,
including 120 acres of woods and wetlands. The park contains over one mile of boardwalk, restrooms,
playground equipment, picnic pavilions, grills, a fishing dock and an enclosed pavilion that serves as Nature’s
Window on the Lake.
Considered an “outdoor classroom,” Lake Lotus Park features a unique ecosystem with more than 100
protected acres of diverse, natural Florida habitat teeming with a seemingly limitless variety of native flora,
fauna and wildlife communities.

Waste Water Reclamation Plant

Waste Water Reclamation Plant
This “research classroom” features the award-winning regional Waste Water Reclamation Plant. The City of
Altamonte Springs Laboratory Division of Public Works is certified by the Florida Department of Health under
compliance with the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference’s Standards to conduct
drinking water and non-potable water tests. Certification depends on successful Florida Department of Health
audits and participation in the Proficiency Testing programs.

Main section:
The Laboratory Division of Public Works protects our environment through consultation, analysis, and reporting
on samples collected throughout the City of Altamonte Springs. Collection events range from tap water testing,
identification of unknown substances, monitoring of industrial contributors, and compliance with Federal and
State monitoring regulations for contamination levels in our lakes and streams, drinking water, reclaimed water,
waste water and its treated effluent. Our laboratory is certified by the State of Florida, Department of Health,
Bureau of Laboratories and the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference (NELAC) for the
examination of samples in the following categories:









We offer year-round science outreach opportunities for groups of 75-150. AS2I curriculum based education
programs are held on Mondays and Tuesdays for grades 6-12. Private openings are available throughout the
year.
To reserve your AS2I date, please provide the following information. In the message, please include the
approximate number of students and chaperones, your preferred date and second option.
