According to industry experts, by 2015, Florida’s workforce will reach a 100,000 person shortfall for “science and technology professionals.” The Opportunity The City of Altamonte Springs, in partnership with Seminole County Public Schools and industry supporters, aims to address Central Florida’s STEM workforce deficit with the Altamonte Springs Science Incubator (AS2I). Building upon the relationships that exist among the City of Altamonte Springs, Seminole County Public Schools, Seminole State College and the University of Central Florida, coupled with the economic development expertise of the AS2I Advisory Alliance and the Seminole County Regional Chamber of Commerce, the Incubator will serve as a key feeder program for the Seminole County and Central Florida STEM workforce. The park contains over one mile of boardwalk, restrooms, playground equipment, picnic pavilions, grills, a fishing dock and an enclosed pavilion that serves as Nature’s Window on the Lake. The City of Altamonte Springs Laboratory Division of Public Works is certified by the Florida Department of Health under compliance with the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Conference’s Standards to conduct drinking water and non-potable water tests. Certification depends on successful Florida Department of Health audits and participation in the Proficiency Testing programs. Collection events range from tap water testing, identification of unknown substances, monitoring of industrial contributors, and compliance with Federal and State monitoring regulations for contamination levels in our lakes and streams, drinking water, reclaimed water, waste water and its treated effluent.
