CUT FLOWER SPECIAL
These are cut flowers not bulbs. We have been sending cut glads
through the mail and Spee-Dee and it has worked very well. We cut the glads
showing good color in bud. When you receive them in 1-4 days, depending on
distance, recut the stems and place in warm water with the flower life type
product included. Let stand a few hours to rehydrate and open.
We can send groups of 12 stems for $30.00. Groups of 24 stems for
$50.00 (delivered pricing) in Minnesota, North Dakota, South Dakota,
Wisconsin and Iowa. All other states: 12 stems for $40.00 and 24 stems for
$60.00. Of course this offer depends upon availability and needs to be booked
at least a week ahead of time. Phone or e-mail orders would probably be best.
During the blooming season we have the advantage of choosing from
the thousands of the very best and newest that we grow.
Spring weather permitting, we hope to have blooms August and September for sure.
Weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, the possibilities are endless.

Greetings
Welcome to Gladiolus Exoticus, our catalog of designer glads at Honker Flats. We are the
Wallace family, Lew, Tammy and Marcus. We are pleased with the response from the past year
and appreciate our new customers, friends and repeat orders.
Special thanks go to hybridizers Bob Longhenry, Don Selinger, Dave Kollasch, Sue
Jackson, Jeff Radunz, Robert Schalow, Lyle Madeson, Mel Schrimpf, John Meyer, Dave Selinger,
and Reg & Marlene Powys-Lybbe for allowing us to showcase their fine creations. The class of
2013 promises to be very exciting indeed!
John Meyer captures his second All America Select award with Red Hot Kisses. What a
sizzling crowd pleaser! First Farmer’s Daughter, now Red Hot Kisses! Throw a kiss my way!
OH YEAH BABY! Also very loud is John’s Mr Z a really intense orange. The artfully done Peach
Patina, will be awesome in arrangements. Cloud Dancing won the Ed Squires Award this
summer, and is soooo fluffy.
Reg and Marlene have showered us with gladiolus blessings. Queen Katherine is destined
to be on the Court of Honor. I can hardly wait to see it in the hands of our master showmen, maybe
even at the NAGC convention show this fall. Sugared Rose will also be right there, with its huge
wide open florets of sugared rose. Island Girl has caught attention in the seedling class. It’s an
unforgettable color, as well as Wasa Angel. What fun to have exotic new colors to play with. This
year’s intros are loud and exotic, promising to yield loads of joy. Thanks hybridizers for sharing
your best.
Our friend Bob Longhenry passed away in October. We have been blessed over the years
with his and Pat’s friendship and generosity. Bob was a great mentor, we have learned lots about
growing glads. Bob would bring along seedlings to the shows just to see what we could come up
with in designs. We delighted together in the wide diversity of glads. Probably his most
fantastical variety to date is named for his bride Patricia Ann. His legacy to the glad world will
live on as Bob continued to make crosses and selections these last years. In the fall of 2011 he
gifted us his entire collection. There are marvelous seedling in propagation-each one brings back
memories of time well spent.
What a fun show season. First at New Ulm-Marcus excelled, winning the Carl Fischer
Award for top design with his “Jack and the Bean Stalk”. Lew and Tammy had the champions at
the MN State Fair show and Lew won the Honker Flats Glad Festival Show with a gladiolus
chandelier, using Red Hot Kisses! The Glad Society has such a talented group of people and we
do have a great fun time together. Many of these people made the drive up to Middle River to
make the Honker Flats Glad Festival happen. Our number of local exhibitors continues to increase, with many first time exhibitors. If you grow glads bring them to show in Minnesota. Our
Mn society also provides glads if you want to participate in the design shows.
A big announcement! No Glad Festival this year! Because the Minnesota Glad Society is
hosting the NAGC(North American Gladiolus Council)Convention, starting Labor Day weekend
2013. “The Great Gladiolus Get-Together” Mystic Lake Casino see pg. 19 for more info. This
will be the very first time the convention and full scale show(8-31 & 9-1) will be held in gladiolus
growing season. A big change from a January time frame. This is a very exciting time to belong
to the MN Gladiolus Society and NAGC. We personally invite each of you to the convention and
show. It will be one of a kind!
Our main business of Honker Flats Greenhouse continues to flourish. We now prepare for
our 39th season. We appreciate those that “come home to Honker Flats” each year to shop for
their bedding plants, exotic annuals, perennials and nursery stock. The walk in cooler is a huge
success for our Bare Root Barn. We specialize in the newest introductions to horticulture. Late
summer and through fall visit our glad fields, check out our produce-the tastiest melons, tomatoes,
peppers, ground cherries etc. Whether you purchase glads from our catalog, visit our
greenhouses, visit a show or join a society, “Welcome to our Honker Flats Family!”

FARMER’S DAUGHTER
(Meyer 12) 424 AAS LM

John & Barb Meyer’s first All America
Select Winner. She’s dressed in hot neon

Ho-Down when you escort this well
endowed filly into the show hall. YeeHaw!
HAPPY HOUR (Schrimpf 12) 265 M
[MS-111] (Open) It’s always 5 o’clock
somewhere when you have this
expressive medium reddish rose, with a
sharp deep rose blotch on a large cream
throat growing in your patch. What a site
to behold when 28 formal buds burst into
bloom holding 10 open with 10 in color.
Already a seedling champ- Happy Hour
has a great future.
PROFESSOR PLUM
(David Selinger 12) 278 EM
[Sel 04-17] (Rembrandt X (Magic Night x
Bambino)) Professor Plum did it in the
show hall, on the court of honor. He used
those fantastic deep purple blossoms,
accented with light lavender-white anthers and stigma to his advantage- who
could argue with slender stiff stems, a 24
inch flower head, 24 buds, opening 8 in
formal fashion and 5-6 in color. Case
solved.
SACIA LYNN (Meyer 12) 475 M
[JM 10-03] (Open) Named for one of
John’s granddaughters, you will be
captivated by Sacia Lynn’s remarkable
color – a bright medium rosy lavender,
with a wide white lip petal marking,
overlaid with deep rosy lavender veining.
Robust vigor and health, 24 buds on a 32
inch head, 8 open in formal style with 6 in
color- Sacia Lynn’s large ruffled blooms
will keep you wanting more!
SPRITZER (Don Selinger 12) 363 EM
[Sel 01-33] (Erin Rose X Open) Pop the cork
its time to celebrate! Our Minnesota
society has been awaiting the arrival of
Spritzer since it won the 2008 Ed Squires
Seedling Award at the Central International Show in Austin, MN. Spritzer is a
sparkling medium rose with a deeper rose
blotch. It’s an unusual shade of rose that
works well in arranging. Spritzer has
triangular, ruffled florets of medium
substance. 23 inch heads with 21-22 buds,
