Greetings, Sharing of Our Church Life
Passing the Peace of Christ
Greeting
L: Some Bibles are worn and cracked, fragile with much use.
P: Some Bibles are scattered around our houses, waiting to be opened.
L: Some Bibles are familiar, steady companions.
P: Some Bibles are fresh, pages crisp and waiting.
L: So are we, people of God. So are we.
P: We are ready to worship, in all the stages of our lives, this morning.
Hymn, No. 61
“Come, Thou Almighty King”
Opening Prayer (Abingdon Worship)
Gracious God, all week we have been fighting the good fight, running the race, and
keeping the faith. And today we need your care, for we must go out and strive again
next week. Silence the tumult in our lives. Lift from us all sin and defeat. Pour your
Spirit upon us. Water the furrows of our lives with your softening showers. We wait in
the goodness of your house, for your merciful and generous care. Amen.

Offering Our Prayers
Pastoral Prayer and The Lord’s Prayer
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy
will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And
forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And
lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
The Offertory
“Song of Quiet Praise”
(arr. Sewell)
Doxology, No. 94
Prayer of Dedication (GBOD)
Merciful Lord, we offer our gifts and we offer our prayers, not trusting in our
righteousness, but as those who trust only in your love and grace. Keep from
us any temptation to see ourselves as better than any other, remembering that
you loved us all so much that you gave us your only Son. Help us to see in
Christ, our mediator, the way to love you and all your children more fully. We
pray in Christ’s holy name. Amen.

Scripture
Luke 18:9-14
Jesus also told this parable to some who trusted in themselves that they
were righteous and regarded others with contempt: “Two men went up to
the temple to pray, one a Pharisee and the other a tax collector.
The Pharisee, standing by himself, was praying thus, ‘God, I thank you that
I am not like other people: thieves, rogues, adulterers, or even like this tax
collector. I fast twice a week; I give a tenth of all my income.’
But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even look up to heaven,
but was beating his breast and saying, ‘God, be merciful to me, a sinner!’ I
tell you, this man went down to his home justified rather than the other; for
all who exalt themselves will be humbled, but all who humble themselves
will be exalted.”

Church Women United is an is an ecumenical movement that brings together Protestant,
Catholic, Orthodox, and other Christian women in the United States and Puerto Rico. The
theme, Walking Through Doors of Opportunity, invites those who are members of the
movement to consider the many missed opportunities we have had as a result of the
various barriers or road blocks that have kept us from moving forward in the movement
and in our own individual ministries.
