Observing Osmosis: Gummy Bear Lab
In this activity, you will investigate the affect of water and solutions on objects, using gummy
bears.
Question: What effect does soaking Gummy Bear in water and salt water have on the size of
the candy?

Day 1 Lab Procedure:
1. Write your group members names on the 2 pieces of masking tape.
2. Place your tape on your cups.
3. Using your metric ruler measure the height (how tall) and the width (across).
4. Record the height and weight in the data table.
5. Using digital scale to find the mass of your gummy bear.
6. Record the mass in the data table.
7. Record descriptive observations (how it looks, feels, smells) about the gummy bear.
8. Repeat measurements for gummy bear B.
9. Put 1 gummy bear in container A with water covering the bear and set aside.
10.Place the second gummy bear in container B with saltwater covering the bear and set
aside.
11. Leave over night.
Day 2 Lab Procedure:
1. Gently remove the gummy bear from the water (cup A). Be very careful because the
candy is extremely fragile. DO NOT EAT THE CANDY!!
2. Using your metric ruler measure the height (how tall) and the width (across at the widest
part).
3. Record the height and weight in the data table.
4. Using the triple beam balance find the mass of your gummy bears.
5. Record the mass in the data table.
6. Record descriptive observations (how it looks, feels, smells) about the gummy bear.
7. Repeat the process with gummy bear B.
