Name_____________________ Date____________ Period______ Observing Osmosis: Gummy Bear Lab In this activity, you will investigate the affect of water and solutions on objects, using gummy bears. Question: What effect does soaking Gummy Bear in water and salt water have on the size of the candy? Hypothesis: (If…Then statement) __________________________________________________________________________ _____________________________________________________________________________ Day 1 Lab Procedure: 1. Write your group members names on the 2 pieces of masking tape. 2. Place your tape on your cups. 3. Using your metric ruler measure the height (how tall) and the width (across). 4. Record the height and weight in the data table. 5. Using digital scale to find the mass of your gummy bear. 6. Record the mass in the data table. 7. Record descriptive observations (how it looks, feels, smells) about the gummy bear. 8. Repeat measurements for gummy bear B. 9. Put 1 gummy bear in container A with water covering the bear and set aside. 10.Place the second gummy bear in container B with saltwater covering the bear and set aside. 11. Leave over night. Day 2 Lab Procedure: 1. Gently remove the gummy bear from the water (cup A). Be very careful because the candy is extremely fragile. DO NOT EAT THE CANDY!! 2. Using your metric ruler measure the height (how tall) and the width (across at the widest part). 3. Record the height and weight in the data table. 4. Using the triple beam balance find the mass of your gummy bears. 5. Record the mass in the data table. 6. Record descriptive observations (how it looks, feels, smells) about the gummy bear. 7. Repeat the process with gummy bear B. Data Table: Day 1: BEFORE Height(cm) Day1: Observations of Both Gummy Bears Day 2: AFTER Day 2: Observations of Both Gummy Bears DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SECTION Water Salt Water Width(cm) DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SECTION Water Salt Water Weight (g) Water Salt Water DO NOT WRITE IN THIS SECTION Differences: Difference between Day 1 and 2 (subtract) Data Analysis: Graph the height and weight of both bears before and after on a bar graph. Remember: title, labels, numbering and color! Conclusion Questions: Must answer in complete sentences!!! 1- What happened to the candy after soaking in water overnight? ______________________ Why? ___________________________________________________________________ 2- What happened to the candy after soaking in saltwater overnight? ___________________ Why? ___________________________________________________________________ 3- How did the addition of salt change the movement of water? ________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ 4- Would this happen if you put the gummy bear in kool-aid? _______ Why or why not? ______ _______________________________________________________________________ 5- What is osmosis? ________________________________________________________ 6- How does this lab illustrate osmosis? _________________________________________ _______________________________________________________________________ 7- Draw a picture illustrating the movement of the water in cup A on (1) Day 1 and (2) Day 2. Label what is occurring in each picture.
