Hospital Sliding -Scale Care
Some Maine Hospitals will charge you less if you qualify.
Who can get Sliding-Scale Hospital Care?
Some hospitals in Maine give Sliding-Scale Care to individuals and families who make too much
money to get Free Care. Look at the chart on the back page to see who can get Free
Care and Sliding-Scale care, and where to get it. You have a right to "medically necessary"
care at ANY hospital in Maine, even if you can't pay for it. Depending on your household income,
you could get that care free ofcharge, or on a sliding-scale.
What services can I get?
Usualiy, Sliding-Scale Care at hospitals is for "medically necessary" inpatient and outpatient
hospital services. Some hospitals provide other services as well. To find out what your hospital
covers, you can contact the hospital Patient Accounts Office (billing office). If it looks like you
may not qualify because of income, call our Helpline at 1-8oo-9 6S-Z+26. There may be other options that can help.
How do
I apply?
Call the hospital and ask for Patient Accounts (billing office), or the hospital's Free or SlidingScale program. They will talk to you about the program, and help you to fill out an application.
What if they deny my application?
If your application is denied, the hospital will give you a denial letter. If you believe you should
have been accepted, you can appeal. To appeal, you must request an administrative fair hearino
within 6o days of the date of the denial letter. You can request your hearing:

Whether the denial is correct or not, there may be other programs to help. Call the Consumer
Assistance Helpline at 1-8oo-965-Z+26 for other ideas for help with health care costs.
How do they calculate income?
The hospital may ask you for proof of household income (like check stubs or tax returns). The
hospital must look at income over the past 12 months OR the past 3 months. You may qualify if
your income is under the limit for EITHER time period. If you do not qualify one way, you may
qualify the other way!

Hospital Free Care
Maine Hospitals must provide Free Care if you qualify.
Who can get Free Care?
You have a right to "medically necessary" care at any hospital in Maine, even if you can't pay for
it. If your household income is at or under the monthly income listed below, you can get that
care free of charge:
.
.
.
.
.
Up to $r,459 a month for one person
Up to $t,967 a month for a family of z
Up to $2,474 a month for a family of 3
Up to $2,982 a month for a family of 4
For families bigger than 4, just add $So8 for each additional famrly member
Plus, many hospitals in Maine give Free Care to people with higher incomes!
Turn this flyer over for a list of Free Care Programs with income guidelines that are higher.
What services can
I get?
Hospitals must provide Free Care to eligible people for "medically necessary" hospital
services. This often means emergency services only and may not include services like lab work
and other services. To find out if a Hospital Free Care Program covers more than emergency
services, contact the hospital Patient Accounts Office (billing office) for that hospital.
How do
I apply?
Call the hospital and ask for the Patient Accounts Office (billing office), or ask for the hospital's
Free Care Program. They will tell you about Free Care and help you fiII out their application.
Sometimes hospitals ask you to apply for MaineCare as a first step.
What if they deny my application?
If your application is denied, the hospital will give you a denial letter. If you believe you should
have been accepted, you can appeal. To appeal, you must request an administrative fair hearing
within 6o days of the date of the denial letter. You can request your hearing:

How do they calculate my income?
The hospital may ask you for check stubs, tax returns or other documents to prove your income.
They can look at income over the past 12 months OR the past 3 months. You may qualify if your
income is under the limit for EITHER time period. If you do not qualify one way, you may qualify
the other r,vay! For example, looking at the last 3 months may help people with higher yearly income
if their income dropped in the 3 months before the application.
I think our income is too high...
Even if you think your income is too high for Free Care, payment plans or discount
programs may be options for you. Ask your hospital about its Sliding-Scale program
or call Consumers for Affordable Health Care's Consumer Assistance Helpline at

What is MaineCare?
MaineCare is free or very low-cost health coverage for eligible Maine residents. MaineCare
coverage can include well and sick care office visits, hospital care (including emergency room
care), lab and x-rays, prescription drugs, substance abuse and mental health services, family
planning, specialist care, dental care, and much more.
Who Can Get MaineCare?
Parents, children, young adults, and adults who are 65 and older or disabled may be able to get
MaineCare, whether they are working OR unemployed. To get MaineCare, your income must be
below a certain amount. People who are 65 and older or have a disability must also be below
certain asset levels, but many assets (like a home, a vehicle, and more) do not count against you.
