HP R&D
HP India has R&D centers that cater to the broad spectrum from rich
and intuitive user interfaces to servers, storage, networking, printers and
mobile technology.
Our HP Labs India center was established in Bangalore on February 2002
with the principal focus on creating new technologies for addressing the
ICT needs of the next billion customers for HP.
HP Labs current research thrust is on providing intuitive and rich user
experiences through easy to use user-centric technologies, such as (1)
intuitive multimodal and gestural interaction, (2) simplified web access,
(3) compelling applications and services that seamlessly work across
mobile and stationary domains, and (4) the role of technology in
education and learning.
It involves integrating the above research threads into innovative system
frameworks to build and demonstrate complete systems. Some of the
contributions from HP Labs India include Personalized
Video, SiteOnMobile, Gesture Keyboard, Lipi Toolkit, Trusted
Hardcopy, Printcast and Educenter. . These contributions have received
recognitions such as the Asian Wall Street Journal Technology
Innovation Award 2006, Manthan Award 2007 and NASSCOM Award
2007.
Our HP ESSN & HP Software R&D Labs is involved in product
development for the ESSN and HP software business units. It addresses
R&D for enterprise products such as HP-UX, Nonstop and OVMS
Operating Systems, Scalable & High Performance Computing,
Datacenter Management, Automation & High Availability, Storage
solution.
The IPG R&D Hub, located in Bangalore and Gurgaon, is one of the key
R&D centers for IPG. The IPG R&D hub in Bangalore was established in

2005 and in Gurgaon in February 2009
Formed in June 2009, the first version of IPG’s web platform and first set
of applications for low-end consumer printers was developed by the
team in India in April 2010 and it opened up cloud services for
PrintApps. This innovation made it possible to run PrintApps on HP
Photosmart D110 series printers. Since then the team has enabled
connectivity for all Inkjet and LaserJet printers creating new experiences.
The team led development of email printing capability (ePrint) and
brought the same in to market in July 2010
The team has filed 30 patents in the area of web connected printers that
include innovations in the areas of ePrint, PrintApps, Scan to Cloud and
support for MobileApps.
In June 2011, HP opened of a new and full-fledged HP Imaging and
Printing Enterprise Solutions Experience Centre in Bangalore, India. The
HP IPG Enterprise Solutions Experience Centre is a first-of-its-kind
customer discovery centre in the country. The centre offers enterprises
an immersive, simulated experience of optimized real-world work
environments with latest innovation in printing solutions. Apart from
Bangalore, similar centers are located in, Singapore, Hong Kong and
Taiwan
Manufacturing
HP has one PC manufacturing base in India located at Pantnagar,
Uttarakhand to manufacture products for the local markets.
The facility was opened in March 2007 and is equipped with more than
four state-of-the-art production lines and has the capacity to produce
up to 3.5 million computer systems including desktops, workstations
and notebooks per year.
Bridging the digital divide in India
 In India HP launched its ‘Lab-in-Box’ concept in 2011, which is a selfsustained, mobile classroom that can be set up in rural communities
and runs off its own generator. HP India announced the project in
response to the Government’s agenda to implement more creative,
sustainable and inclusive models of education. It is self-contained
and fully operational from day one and aims to solve the problems
of lack of classroom infrastructure, including electricity and internet
connectivity.


The HP Dreamscreen PC in India was developed in India, for India,
after months of HP research on scores of India families in their home
and collaborations with leading India content and service providers.

In, July 08, 2010- HP Labs India announced the launch of a cloud
service ‘SiteonMobile’, a breakthrough technology that can make
Internet content and services available to the masses even from lowend mobile phones. The solution enables portal owners to easily
design mobile applications and extend their reach from100 million
internet users and 12 million broadband Internet users to more than
890 million mobile phone users. The cloud service developed by the
India research team at HP Labs includes a unique solution for rapid
creation of mobile applications.

In July 2011, HP announced Write&Read, a collaborative storywriting program driven by HP’s industry-leading imaging and
printing technologies to bring young students’ imagination to life.
Prolific lyricist, Prasoon Joshi joined the initiative as the creative
mentor for the students, who will participate in workshops run by
Katha, an NGO that brings children living in poverty into reading and
quality education. Through workshops and a story writing contest,
Write&Read allowed children to convert their creative spark and
imagination into some great stories. In the first phase, HP has
organized Write&Read workshops across six cities in India - Delhi,
Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai and Pune and reached out to
more than 1000 children. At the end of the workshops, participants
will create and submit a short story for an all India story writing
contest. 50 winning entries will be included in a book to be
published and distributed to libraries by Katha.
Advancing STEM education in India
HP Catalyst Initiative: HP is building a global network of consortia that is
developing more effective approaches to science, technology,
engineering and math (STEM) education. The goal is to create
international collaborative “sandboxes” of innovation that will explore
what the future of STEM education can look like—a future where
students use their technical and creative ingenuity to address urgent
social challenges in their communities.
In March 2011 HP invited over a 100 global education leaders to the HP
Catalyst Summit in New Delhi. Conversations with policy leaders, expert
debates and innovation showcases from India and around the world
were part of the agenda. At the HP Catalyst Summit, HP also announced
a US$1 million Education Innovation Fund for India (EIFI) to advance
research in STEM education.
In 2011 HP has announced the addition of two Indian organizations,
Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University and Learning Links Foundation
to its global HP Catalyst Initiative. Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham
University joins the Measuring Learning consortium while Learning Links

Foundation joins the newly formed STEM-preneur consortium, which
will explore novel ways to combine science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) education with the skills and passion of
entrepreneurship. They will each receive more than US$150,000 in
technology, cash, and professional services from HP.
Fostering a spirit of entrepreneurship
HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE): HP Learning
Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP LIFE) launched in 2010 is a global
program that trains students, potential entrepreneurs and small
business owners to harness the power of IT to establish and grow their
businesses. Face-to-face trainings and online tools address the
educational needs of people, improve and strengthen their skills and
enable them to move forward – regardless of backgrounds, locations or
circumstance. HP LIFE builds on prior successful education programs
called GET-IT, HELP, and MAP. It brings them under one umbrella and
broadens their reach.
In 2010, organizations in India received grants within HP LIFE programs
with a total value of more than $250,000. In 2011, HP has added five
new training centers to its HP Learning Initiative for Entrepreneurs (HP
LIFE) program.
There is a strong social impact for the HP LFE programs in India. Since
2007 to March 2011:
 9,000+ micro-entrepreneurs and youth were trained in India as
on March 2011
 Over 20,000 individuals have accessed HP technology
 Over 1,100 new jobs created from business growth and over
2300 students trained obtained employment
 Almost 1000 new businesses established since 2009

Hewlett-Packard India’s Planet Partners Hardware Recycling Program
[PPP] is part of HP’s ongoing commitment to offer recycling programs
that are convenient, environmentally sound and consistent with its
global commitment to corporate citizenship.
The HP India Consumer Product Take-Back Program is an expanded
initiative in India that provides consumer and small and medium
business (SMB) customers with easy means to dispose their used
computing equipment in an environmentally responsible manner. The

HP India Consumer Product Take-Back Program offers consumer takeback services in 9 states and 15 locations across India
HP in partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI)
launched the Hewlett Packard – TERI Schools’ Future Program – an
initiative to implement environment improvement projects at schools.
HP awarded a grant of USD 250,000 comprising cash and technology to
TERI towards the program. The program will help primary and secondary
schools in Bangalore, Chennai and Delhi to take practical action to save
energy and water while reducing their utility bills.
HP and World Wildlife Fund partnered to reduce HP's greenhouse gas
emissions from its operating facilities worldwide, educate and inspire
others to adopt best practices, and use HP technology in conservation
efforts around the world. In 2009, HP India and WWF India partnered as
the Green Technology Partner for Earth Hour 2009.
Awards and Recognition
 HP was awarded by the Indo American Chamber of Commerce as
the Best US Company operating in India (Overall Best), in IACC’s 7th
Indo-American Corporate Excellence Awards.
 The Trust Research Advisory’s inaugural Brand Trust Report India
Study 2011 has ranked HP as India’s 23rd Most Trusted Brand and No
1 Most Trusted Band in the Technology Category for 2011
 HP India won the Gold Award in the Reader’s Digest Trusted Brand
2011 Survey in “Personal Computer (Desktop/Notebook)” category
and Platinum Award in the Multi-function Printer/Copier category.
 HP IPG was named 2010 CRN Channel Champion in the Home
Printer and Work Group Printer categories. The CRN Channel
Champions study measures overall channel partner perceptions of
vendor products and services and winners were decided based on
the votes from 1210 unique channel partners from 147 cities across

March 2011.
 HP adjudged the “Most Trusted Brand” among customers and
channel partners in 2010 and won the ‘Most Innovative Product Best MFP 2010’ by National Computrade News (NCN). Vendors,

resellers, channel partners and end-users from across the country
were invited to nominate and vote for products in the given
category. Once the online voting was closed, NCN further rated each
product/solution on its design, functionality, performance and
impact; and based on the overall score
HP India has been ranked the #1 multinational company and #1
