WORDS OF WELCOME
BAVARIA IS AMONG THE STRONGEST business locations in the world and for years,
it has been a front-runner in Germany in terms of economic growth. With a per-capita GDP
of 34,716 Euros in 2007, the State of Bavaria ranks well up among the leaders worldwide.
A major reason accounting for these excellent results is Bavaria’s foreign trade.
The export of Bavarian products has tripled in the last 15 years. With exports totaling
some 154 billion Euros the Bavarian economy succeeded in setting its 14th successive export record in 2007. At the same time, the export share of Bavarian industry has now
reached a high of 50 %. One out of every two Euros in Bavarian industry is being generated in
the global markets. Bavaria’s small and medium-sized companies (SMEs) have already
achieved an export share of nearly 30 %.
These export successes show that the range of products and services coming from Bavarian
enterprises is in great demand worldwide. Bavarian companies are strategically placed in
terms of global competition and well represented in all the markets of the world.
The aim of Bavarian foreign trade policy is to strengthen and enhance Bavaria’s front-line
position in the field of exports. For Bavaria, foreign trade policy means first and foremost a
pro-SME policy that compensates for the size-related disadvantages and risks incurred by
small and medium-sized enterprises.
MARTIN ZEIL, MdL
Member of the Bavarian Parliament,
Bavarian Minister of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure, Transport and
Technology and Deputy MinisterPresident of Bavaria
In view of the slump in the global economy, Bavarian SMEs need more support to further step
up their export competency. Particularly in the current difficult economic climate, it is all the
more important to mobilize recognized, but as yet unexploited export potential.
In close collaboration with its partners in industry – particularly the chambers and various
business associations – and Bayern International, the Bavarian State Government helps
companies based here to take advantage of the opportunities posed by globalization with
support instruments and activities tailored to the needs of small and medium-sized enterprises
and aimed at opening up new markets abroad, building up contacts with international partners
and transacting business.
In turn, the Bavarian market presents a wide range of opportunities to foreign companies.
Invest in Bavaria, the Foreign Direct Investment and Location Marketing Division in the
Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, offers investors a one-stop shop of all-round services.
KATJA HESSEL, MdL
Member of the Bavarian Parliament,
Vice-Minister, Bavarian Ministry
of Economic Affairs, Infrastructure,
Transport and Technology

BAVARIA’S FOREIGN
TRADE IN NUMBERS
THE 14TH EXPORT RECORD IN SUCCESSION! With exports totaling
153.6 billion Euros in 2007 and an export surplus of 29.7 billion Euros,
foreign trade is the driving force behind the Bavarian economy.
Export of Bavarian products has nearly tripled in the last 15 years.
The export share of GDP has increased from 18.5 % in 1992 to
35.4 % in 2007. In 1992, imports also accounted for 17.3 % of GDP,
rising to 28.6 % by 2007. Germany ranks in top place among the
major exporting nations of the world. Bavaria alone ranks 18th,
even ahead of such countries as Brazil, Australia or Sweden.
BAVARIAN COMPANIES ARE WELL REPRESENTED in all markets around the world. In 2007, the most important trading partner for Bavaria was Austria for the first time with a 27.4 % share
of total trade, followed by the USA with 25.1 %, Italy 22.1 %,
France 18.1 %, Great Britain 17.1 % and China 16.2 %. The most
important buyers of products made by Bavarian companies in
2007 were once again the USA with a 16.4 % share of total exports, followed by Austria with 13.1 %, Italy with 12.9 %, Great
Britain with 12.1 % and France with 11.5 %. The main responsible forces behind the development of Bavarian exports are the
member states of the European Union with an increase of 10.7 %
in 2007 and a combined share of total exports of 62.4 %. Exports
to the EU countries in Central and Eastern Europe have developed
exceptionally dynamical. The fastest expanding markets for
Bavarian industry also include Russia and the CIS, India and
China, Latin America and the Arab countries in the Middle East.

FOREIGN TRADE IN BAVARIA
BAVARIA is firmly integrated in the global
economy. Thanks to a wide range of import
and export products, direct investment
activities and international cooperations,
Bavarian companies play a major role and
make invaluable partners in the world
markets.
THE PRINCIPAL AIM of Bavarian foreign
trade policy is to secure and further
enhance the foreign trade successes and
accomplishments achieved by Bavarian
companies. This means:
- Maintaining and further boosting
market shares in countries where Bavaria
already has a strong economic presence,
such as the USA and the EU;
- opening up new growth markets for
Bavarian companies, especially in Eastern
Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
IN CLOSE COLLABORATION with our partners – in particular the Bavarian chambers
and business associations – and with the
cooperation of Bayern International, we
proactively assist companies based in
Bavaria in exploring and opening up new
markets abroad.
WE OFFER a customized set of support
instruments, tailored specifically to the
needs and individual requirements of small
and medium-sized enterprises
(www.stmwivt.bayern.de/pdf/wirtschaft/
Erfolgreich_im_Ausland_englisch.pdf).
OUR CONTACTS and the networks of
chambers and business associations in
Germany and abroad, help Bavarian
companies to find suitable business
partners and platforms for successfully
representing their organizations:
- In cooperation with Bayern International,
we organize business delegations
enabling companies to establish valuable
contacts in target countries while providing
political support.
- We host delegations from all over the
world.
- Bavaria`s many foreign representations
offer advice and information and can
provide helpful contacts. Their services
are placed at the disposal of Bavarian
companies as local contacts and offer
support to potential investors in
collaboration with “Invest in Bavaria”.

REASONS FOR BAVARIA
A TOP LOCATION AT THE HEART OF EUROPE
Bavaria’s ideal geographical position and its role as a key hub of international trade affords
quick and easy access to all of Europe’s markets. Located in the very heart of the European
Economic Area (EEA) with nearly half a billion consumers, companies based in Bavaria are
ideally placed to access new sales markets.
GATEWAY TO CENTRAL AND EASTERN EUROPE
For centuries, Bavaria has been cultivating close political and economic relations with the
countries in Central and Eastern Europe. Especially since the enlargement of the EU to the East,
Bavaria has established itself as a turntable between East and West.
STATE-OF-THE-ART INFRASTRUCTURE
Bavaria’s advanced infrastructure offers investors maximum mobility and flexibility. Be it rail,
road, water or air – Bavaria guarantees the speediest possible transport of passengers and
freight. Efficient, reliable data and information exchange is ensured by innovative information
and communications technologies.
HIGHLY QUALIFIED AND MOTIVATED WORKFORCE
Only highly qualified and motivated experts with ideas and commitment are in a position to
produce top quality of worldwide repute. Bavaria’s excellent universities and its system of dual
vocational education combining theory with on-the-job training in trades requiring an apprenticeship ensure maximum employee competence.
RENOWNED UNIVERSITIES & RESEARCH INSTITUTIONS
11 universities, 17 universities of applied sciences, 11 Max Planck Institutes and 9 institutes of
the Fraunhofer Society make Bavaria a world leader in research. It also hosts 3 of the 15 German
Helmholtz research centers. Bavaria therefore offers the ideal prerequisites for developing new
technologies and services, a reason for its top ranking in German patent registrations.
FORWARD-POINTING HIGH-TECH CLUSTERS
Bavaria enjoys a leading position – both nationally and internationally – in key technology sectors ranging from information and communications through biotechnology all the way to energy
and medical technology and satellite navigation. The State Government’s Cluster Initiative “Allianz Bayern Innovativ” (Alliance of Innovative Bavaria) promotes intensive networking of industry and academia and gives high-tech companies the opportunity to share know-how and develop innovative solutions.
STRONG ENTREPRENEURIAL PARTNERS
Bavaria is the home of such global players as Adidas, Audi, BMW, EADS, MAN or Siemens.
Nine of the companies listed in the DAX share index are based in Bavaria. In addition, there is a
dense network of small and medium-sized industrial, trade and service companies throughout
the State – thus providing a broad spectrum of innovative component suppliers, customers and
potential partners for every investor.
WORKING WHERE OTHERS GO ON VACATION
Bavaria is Germany’s favorite holiday and tourist destination and enjoys worldwide appeal. Its
breathtaking scenery, rich culture and the proverbial Bavarian way of life attract even the most
discriminating, sophisticated businessmen and top professionals. Investing, working and living
where others go on vacation – that is Bavaria.
