Fashions, and then answer the questions which follow it.
Marie had just started her first job and is having a talk with a group of
other workers in the shop's canteen. Janet the union representative
meets Marie for the first time.
Anne:
"Hello Marie, this is Janet our shop steward – I was telling
you about her the other day, and she said she will explain to
you about joining a trade union."
Janet:
How are you Marie? – Are you settling into your new job? I
am not sure if you want to join a trade union right now, but if
you wish to I can explain a little bit about how it can help you
and if you are interested in joining I can get you a
Membership Application Form."
Marie:
"I don't know much about trade unions and is it necessary for
me to join?"
Janet:
"You do not have to join a union, but most of the workers
here are members of one union and pay a weekly
subscription. Last year the union took industrial action and
got an increase in pay and better holidays for the workers.
We also ensure that all workers are fairly treated and deal
with any problems they might have with their employer or
other employees.
The union also helps ensure that
standards of safety and hygiene are maintained within the
work place by the Health and Safety Officer."

and get back to you."
