Refutations and Concessions of Parent Objections What is a refutation? A refutation is the process of discrediting the arguments that run counter to your thesis statement or the act of answering an attack on your assertions. In terms of your paper, that means respectfully proving your parents wrong in their objections. Example: Mom, I know you think I will not walk the new dog, but I will. I have proven that I am responsible because I scoop the cat litter everyday. What is a concession? A concession is the act of yielding. In terms of your paper that means agreeing with a parent objection, but generally providing some sort of compensation to partially make up for the problem. Example: Dad, you are right that building a tree house would take a lot of time, but I will help with the project to make it move faster. My friends Paul and Frank have also volunteered to help us build. Create a refutation or concession for each of your parent objections using the chart below. Remember, you have to have at least 5 parent objections. You MUST have a refutation or concession for every parent objection! Parent Objection 1. 2. 3. 4. 5.
