3.7 The Method of Markers (discrete) Used effectively if: ­many more items to be divided than there are players ­items are reasonably close in value Line items up in an array (fixed sequence). Each player independently bids for segments of the array by making N­1 cuts. STEP 1 (Bidding): Each player independently decides on where he/she wants to divide the array (with markers). STEP 2 (Allocations): Scan the array from left to right until you find the first marker. That player gets that first segment, with a tie broken randomly. Remove that segment and that players' markers. Continue scanning from left to right until you reach the first second marker. That player gets his/her second segment. Continue this process until players receive a segment. STEP 3 (Dividing Leftovers): Divide the leftovers by some form of lottery or this method could be used again.
