Forbes’ annual ranking, which distinguishes the top 20 percent of all U.S. undergraduate institutions, placed Azusa Pacific University at 398 out of 650 this year. The Princeton Review designated APU as 1 of 124 institutions in the “Best Western Colleges” section of its 2016 Best Colleges guide. Further, Christian Universities Online named APU No. 8 on the 2016 Top 50 Christian Colleges and Universities with the lowest student loan debt. For the fourth consecutive year, APU was named a Military Friendly School by G.I. Jobs magazine, while Military Times included APU at No. 79 of 175 top schools on its Best For Vets: Colleges 2016 list, affirming the university’s commitment to its 500 veteran and active-duty military students and their families. Grant Highlights The U.S. Department of Education awarded APU $1.1 million over five years for Target Success, a TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) grant project with targeted outcomes such as increased retention, academic standing, and graduation rates for participants. The grant assists students who demonstrate academic need, including undergraduate first-generation college students, those from low-income families, and those with disabilities requiring learning accommodations. Target Success enhances APU’s ability to support SSS-eligible students, who comprised 38 percent of incoming APU students from 2011-13. Azusa Pacific secured a 1:1 challenge grant of $500,000 from the John Stauffer Charitable Trust to support the Department of Biology and Chemistry summer research program for chemistry and biochemestry undergraduate students. The program connects students with faculty mentors active in their field and engages them in the scientific process through original laboratory research. This 10-week experience transforms students into scholars, encouraging critical thinking, technical writing, and analysis of scientific data. Matching funds, to be raised by January 1, 2020, will establish a $1 million endowment and enable APU to double the program and enhance career preparation for participants. Azusa Pacific joined a $30 million initiative with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) to enhance the safety of student-athletes and service members— the most comprehensive study of concussion and head-impact exposure ever conducted. After an intense review process, the committee selected 6 of 100 schools, including APU, to take part in year two of the Concussion Assessment Research and Education Consortium study. Starting August 1, 2015, 99 percent of APU’s more than 450 student-athletes began participating in the two-year study funded by a $286,609 NCAA-DoD grant. The study allows scientists to better understand the true natural history of concussions in athletes, and APU’s participation will ultimately serve to more accurately diagnose, treat, and prevent concussions for all. Employability and Earning Potential The Economist ranked APU graduates as among the most employable in the nation, placing the university in the 92nd percentile as No. 102 among its counterparts. The position points to actual earnings that significantly exceed expectations and reflect employers’ overwhelming recognition of APU graduates as highly employable—a reputation that pays off in higher salaries. Based on recent wage reports, APU alumni with bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degrees earn more than the rest of the nation’s population who hold the same degrees. In key industries in California, APU alumni earn significantly more than their peers. In health care industries, APU graduates earned $30,000 more annually, while those in educational services industries earned $28,000 more. Making a Difference As Scholars The Carnegie designation as a doctoral research institution marked APU’s entrance into the nation’s most prestigious academic community, differentiated by continued focus on teaching and developing research inspired by the needs of the world and informed by faith. Faculty contributions to their respective fields add to APU’s expanding academic reputation. Among APU’s notable accomplishments, 2 faculty and 2 students were named Fulbright scholars in 2015, bringing the total number of recipients to 11 faculty and 32 students since 2003, and positioning APU faculty and students among the world’s elite scholars seeking global engagement and understanding from a Christian perspective. Through Athletics More than 450 student-athletes compete for the university’s 19-sport intercollegiate athletics program. APU produced 16 All-Americans and 167 Academic All-Conference selections in the 2014-15 school year, which was APU’s first year of National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division II active membership. A past eight-time winner of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ prestigious Directors’ Cup, APU finished 17th in the 2014-15 NCAA Division II Directors’ Cup standings to post the best finish for a first-year Division II program since 2001. Many Cougar athletes have also gone on to successful careers in professional sports: 14 athletes have competed in the Olympics, including 2008 decathlon gold medalist Bryan Clay ’03, and 50 other alumni who have been drafted into other professional sports, including Christian Okoye ’87, Kansas City Chiefs running back; Stephen Vogt ’07, Oakland Athletics catcher; Kirk Nieuwenhuis ’08, New York Mets outfielder; and Terrell Watson ’15, Cleveland Browns running back. In Service Since the university’s founding in 1899, service has been an integral part of an APU education. The Center for Student Action mobilizes and educates students toward responsible and transformational service locally and globally through a collaborative network of offices and programs, including outreach in 20 countries. As 1 of 240 institutions classified as a Carnegie Community Engaged campus, APU reaffirms its institutional commitment to deepen the practice of service and strengthen its connection to the community. For the seventh consecutive year, Azusa Pacific has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for exemplary leadership in civic engagement, service-learning, and building community partnerships. APU undergraduates perform more than 165,000 hours of service each year locally and globally. Stay Connected Follow APU at apu.edu/connect/.
