ANNUAL REPORT 2014
Opening Doors to Bright Futures for Kids Since 1921
Proud past, bright future.
Bryan Slaughter and Jacki Bryant
“What the best and
wisest parent wants
for his own child,
that must be what
the community wants
for all its children.”

With a robust 93-year
history, our predecessors
could never have
imagined the evolution
of our organization.
Beginning as an
orphanage in the 1920s,
the organization has
emerged as a multiprogram private
non-profit supporting
nearly 7,000 area kids,
families and child care
providers every year.

We are thrilled to add another milestone to our
agency’s story by changing our name to ReadyKids.
Our new name better reflects what we do, makes
a statement about what we strive to achieve, and
illustrates our intention to keep up with the changing
needs of our community’s kids. Yet, our most
important goal is to increase our accessibility to
the kids and families we partner with every day.
Beverly Adams
We may have changed our name, but not our
programs or unwavering focus and commitment
to the well-being of kids in the Charlottesville area.
It is our collective efforts that ensure all of our
community’s kids are Ready to Learn, Ready
for Relationships and ultimately Ready for Life.
Kelley MacDougall
Join us in celebrating the achievements, both past
and present, of children, families and child care
providers in our community. We look forward to
continuing to partner with you to open doors
to bright futures for kids for years to come.

1946— By the 1940s, we have served about 350 kids.
With support from the Community Chest (now the United Way),
we broaden our mission to include care for adolescents and
support for children whose families are in crisis.

’70s
1993— Family Service, Inc. and the
Office for Children and Youth join forces,
becoming Children, Youth and Family Services, Inc. (“CYFS”)!
Programs focus on: improving the quality of childcare; providing parent
education and support; and providing clinical services to at-risk kids and
families, including shelter for runaway and homeless youth.
2013— CYFS begins to investigate changing our
name, research engages program participants,
donors, Board, past board, local partners, staff
and a random sample of area residents.
1970 to ‘73— Services
expand to include resources
for Charlottesville area
families, and the organization
changes its name to
Family Services.
1970s— Quality child care becomes a local concern, and a
new organization forms to recruit, train and supervise child
care providers, and support parents. The organization quickly
expands, adopting the name Office for Children and Youth
and focuses on foster parent training and recruitment,
emergency shelter for runaways, and counseling for youth.
’00s
2009— CYFS moves into a
new, professional facility at
1000 E. High Street to increase
accessibility to participants.

1921—We open our doors as
Children’s Home, a residence for
children orphaned by the Spanish flu
epidemic that can accommodate
up to 30 children.

unanimously votes to change the
organization’s name! In October,
CYFS officially becomes ReadyKids!
