The company was founded by entrepreneur Philip Knight and sports spor trainer Bill Bowerman. Blue Ribbon Sports mainly imported Onitsuka Tiger shoes from Japan and sold them to athletes and teams at stadiums and sporting porting events around the country. In 1966 they opened their first store in Santa Monica, California. In the early 1970s the founders decided to produce their own shoes.
