US 301 Widening Duval and Nassau County Work is underway on a three-year widening project on US 301 from just north of Baldwin in Duval County to just south of Callahan in Nassau County. The first 2.3 miles of work will be in Duval County from just north of the proposed Baldwin bypass to the Nassau County line. The remaining 15 miles of the widening will occur in Nassau County from the Duval County line to Pickett Road. Project Fast Facts: The widening includes the replacement of 11 bridges in six locations in Construction began: November 14, 2011 Nassau County. The overpass at the Norfolk Southern Railroad and bridges over the following creeks are included: the south and north Completion date: Late 2014 Brandy Branch Creeks, Thomas Creek, Funks Branch Creek and Funks Design-Build Cost: $59.6 million provided Creek. In addition to the widening and bridge replacements, the project also includes construction of 19 drainage ponds, concrete medians as well as sidewalks in Bryceville. The Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT) has hired Anderson Columbia Company, Inc. of Lake City to build the project as designed by Horizon Engineering Group of Orlando at a cost of $59.6 million. by FDOT and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) Contractors: Anderson Columbia Company, Inc. of Lake City (Contractor) Horizon Engineering Group of Orlando (Designer) The project will be built in four separate phases and each phase will have different traffic impacts. Phase 2 (Fall 2012 to Spring 2013*) Phase 1 (November 2011 to Fall 2012*) During this phase of construction, temporary pavement on the sides of the existing roadway will be constructed as necessary. Motorists will encounter daytime and nighttime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic after 8:30 a.m. The contractor is allowed to work seven days a week. Phase 3 (Spring 2013 to Spring 2014*) The existing roadway and bridges will be reconstructed. Traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed roadway and bridges completed in Phase 2. Motorists can expect minimal daytime and nighttime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic after 8:30 a.m. seven days a week. The new roadway sections and bridges parallel to the existing roadway will be constructed. Traffic shifts will occur on various side streets and on US 301 during this phase of work. Semi truck traffic will not be allowed to use Otis Road for a period of time during this phase. Motorists can expect minimal daytime and nighttime lane closures with flaggers directing traffic after 8:30 a.m. seven days a week. Phase 4 (Spring 2014 to Fall 2014*) During this phase, crews will finish median construction including openings, remove temporary pavement and median crossovers and place the final layer of asphalt. Traffic will be shifted onto the newly constructed four-laned US 301.
