In addition to studying the theory and application of business strategy, students will also run their own companies in a competitive business simulation, analyse the performance of companies and the environment, and make presentations to management. ACADEMIC CREDIT (HOURS) 3.0 PREREQUISITE/COREQUISITE This course requires that students possess a solid background in the major functional areas of business, and as a result, it is essential that students have completed all prerequisite courses. The prerequisite for BADM 270 is completion of all first year Business Administration diploma courses. BADM 260 or BUS 310 (Introduction to Finance) is also a prerequisite or co-requisite of this course. LEARNING OUTCOMES The objectives of this course are to integrate learning from other courses in the Business Administration diploma program and to develop strategic thinking. Upon successfully completing this course, you should be able to: • • • • • • • • illustrate how strategic planning integrates into the core business functions; analyze and evaluate a firm’s business strategy; apply strategic planning process models to business problems and issues; analyze and solve business problems; formulate a strategic plan; manage and organize team work; employ entrepreneurial and strategic approaches to managing a firm; and demonstrate professional behaviour. LEARNING ACTIVITIES Learning activities in this course include lectures, in-class and on-line discussions, team projects, on-line assignments and the use of a computerized business simulation. The course is divided into two main parts. In the first part of the course, the case study approach is used to explore the theory and application of business strategy. The main goals are to learn the principles of strategic planning and apply process models to real business problems and issues. In the second part of the course, a computerized business simulation is used to learn and develop an integrated understanding of how all the business functions and specialties (Marketing, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Operations, Economics, etc…) contribute to the success of the firm and maximization of shareholder wealth. REQUIRED TEXTBOOK Business Integration – BADM 270 Fall 2014 and Winter 2015 Custom publication available at the RDC Bookstore based on Essentials of Strategic Management (4th edition) by Gamble and Thompson. McGraw-Hill, 2015. REQUIRED SOFTWARE/REGISTRATION MikesBikes Advanced is a computerized business simulation that will be utilized in this course. All students are required to register with SmartSims and pay a $42 registration fee (details to be provided in class). You will need to register with SmartSims before the mid-term theory exam. COURSE REQUIREMENTS 1) Professionalism • Students are expected to demonstrate business professional behaviors. Assessment of student performance includes an individual grade for professionalism that consists of a combination of attendance, preparedness, appropriate participation in class and on-line discussions, conduct in class, teamwork, and presentation of work. 2) Attendance • Regular attendance is expected. Lack of attendance may impact the students’ ability to successfully complete the course. Students who miss a class are responsible for the material they have missed. Attendance is also important for the successful completion of group work in your team. 3) Class Participation/Team Work • Students are expected to participate in class discussions throughout the course as well as make meaningful contributions to their team’s work. • Contribution to the team for group reports/presentations is critical. Peer reviews will be completed for most team activities, and based on the results of the peer reviews, individual marks may be adjusted at the discretion of the instructor. 4) Homework and Assignments • Students are expected to have read in advance the materials to be taken up in class. An unexcused failure to submit an assignment will result in a mark of zero. • Assignments are due at the start of class on the specified dates - unless otherwise specified by the instructor. Late assignments will not be accepted. 5) Examination • There will be one mid-term theory exam weighted at 25% of your final grade. You must be registered with SmartSims to play MikesBikes Advanced before the mid-term theory exam date. You will receive a mark of zero on the mid-term theory exam if you have not registered. • Any student missing an exam without having made arrangements with the instructor prior to the exam will receive a grade of zero for that exam. 6) General • Students who are encountering difficulty with the course are urged to contact the instructor. • In the case of a grade discrepancy between a posted grade and the grade recorded on the returned assignment/exam the student must produce the exam/assignment with the correct grade in order for the posted grade to be changed. Do not throw out old assignments or exams until you are sure that your posted grade is correct. This is both an individual and team assignment that provides students with the opportunity to produce a written Case Analysis report based on guided questions (e.g. a partial Case Analysis). This is a team assignment that provides students with the opportunity to develop and present a Case Analysis presentation (e.g. a full Case Analysis). An individual multiple choice exam based on the theory covered in Chapters 1 to 5. Team grades will be pro-rated based on the Shareholder Value that each team achieves at the end of the simulation.
