Course Description
Continuation of Arabic 120. Development of oral and written skills based on
practical everyday needs. A focus on your Arabic conversational skills, everyday
use of vocabulary, linguistic structures, and essential grammatical forms, in
addition to the Middle Eastern Culture. Modern Standard Arabic (MSA) will be
used for classroom instruction.
Texts (Required)
“Al-Kitaab fii Taallum Al-Arabiyya with DVDs” Brustad, Kristen. Al-Batal,
Mahmoud. Al-Tonsi, Abbas. Part one, Third Edition.
(Recommended) Arabic/English dictionary.
Student Learning Outcomes
1) Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
2) Demonstrate understanding and use of the present, past, and future
tenses in reading, writing, speaking and listening activities.
3) Compare and contrast theme-specific aspects of Arabic culture to their
own.
Course Objectives
Students will be able to utilize language and vocabulary skills to:
1) Understand main ideas of simple texts and conversations mostly of highly
predictable topics which may include personal biographies, routine or
habitual activities, description of people, places or things, and weather.
2) Carry on simple conversations related to previously mentioned topics.
3) Communicate in writing in the form of notes, paragraphs, and letters to
describe self, family, personal and routine school and work experiences.
4) Read with comprehension and translate material in Modern Standard
Arabic.
5) Recognize and discuss differences/similarities between own culture and
Arabic Cultures.
Content and Activities
1) Listening and speaking tasks organized around thematic units on:
Transportation, living arrangements, leisure activities, work, school, health
and money matters.
2) Presentation and discussion of memorable events, important phases and
political events of different Arab countries and famous Arab-Americans

3) Discussion of cultural differences between the Arabic speaking world and
the students’ own cultures
4) Presentation of grammar explanations to facilitate the acquisition of oral
production of the language
5) Development of writing skills to enable students to produce in writing
what they can communicate orally
6) Presentation of authentic reading material through library resources and
Internet research as the basis for discussions and written/oral
presentations

your email regularly. You are responsible for learning how to recover documents
through blackboard. If you miss important information because you did not
check your e-mail, or not know how to access blackboard, you will still be held
responsible.

Class Attendance
The final grade in this class will be affected by active participation and
attendance, as follows:
Mandatory attendance is required in this class. In case of absence, it is the
responsibility of the student to inform the instructor. Every student is expected to
attend each class meeting, to arrive on time, and to stay for the full class period.
If you leave the class early (defined as anytime before the conclusion of the
class), it will be considered an absence. Student is still responsible for all
homework, quizzes and instructions that took place at that meeting.
There are no make-ups for missed quizzes, or exercises in class therefore, your
attendance is directly proportional to your grade.

Dropping this class
It is the student’s responsibility to drop all classes in which he/she is no longer
attending. It is at the instructor’s discretion (choice) to withdraw a student after

the add/drop deadline due to excessive absences. Instructor will drop a
student after 4 absences.
Instructor may also drop a student for excessive tardiness. After the first
week of classes, if you are late a total of 5times, the instructor will verbally warn
you, however if student continues to arrive tardy, the instructor will drop a
student upon the next instance of tardiness. Tardiness is defined as a student
arriving to class when instructor is already teaching the class (Usually within the
first 5 minutes).
Class Etiquette & Disruptive Behavior:
This class follows Cuyamaca College policies of class behavior. In order to
promote a better learning environment, instructor reserves the right of
reassigning your seating arrangements. A student engaging in disruptive
behavior, i.e. side conversations during class, excessive noise making, continually
leaving their seats or any other behavior that obviously interferes with the
learning environment will be warned on the first offense. If this behavior
continues after warning, the student will be asked to leave the classroom and/or
a disruptive student report will be filed. Following this report, student will be
expelled for the next 2 consecutive meetings.
Please respect your fellow classmates, tardiness or leaving early is disruptive to
the class. If you are late to class, please enter as quietly as possible, an no side
conversations will be tolerated. NO LAPTOPS ALLOWED IN CLASS1
Please turn off cell phones, and iPods. If your cell goes off and interrupts
the class (in any mode), or if you get caught while texting, the consequences will
be as follows: I will call your attention in the first offense. Second offense, I will
deduct 1 point of your grade. If this behavior continues, you will be asked to
leave the class.
Homework
Arabic is a subject learned by practicing the language, therefore, doing your
homework is very important to succeed in this class. In addition you are
expected to study and learn the vocabulary, listen and watch course DVDs at
home. If you miss one homework you miss one point of the 15.
Late homeworks are accepted for half credit.
Note: it’s the student’s responsibility to keep track of his homeworks, inquire
about missing homeworks and figure out what was the homework if he or she
was absent.
