COLLEGE HIGH FACULTY CAMBRIDGE INTERNATIONAL EXAMINATIONS (CIE) INFORMATION SHEET 2016 GRADES 11 & 12 EQUIVALENT – SENIOR CERTIFICATE EQUIVALENT FULL-TIME 2 YEARS The University of Cambridge International Examinations (CIE) is the world’s largest provider of qualifications for young and mature adults alike. As a department of the University of Cambridge, it provides education to students in over 150 countries every year. Whilst providing a wide range of qualifications at the High School level, selected combinations of these qualifications and subjects have been evaluated and given Senior Certificate Equivalence status by the Department of Higher Education and Training. Admission Requirements: Completed Grade 10 with the discretion of the Academic Board Benefits of the CIE Grade 11 & 12 Equivalent: - Senior Certificate Equivalent? The CIE curriculum offers all students the opportunity to obtain a quality Senior Certificate without Matric exemption. The flexibility of the Cambridge system facilitates individual growth to higher levels within the CIE structure, thus enabling access to higher levels of post-school education. Local and international recognition. By offering teaching in a different environment, College High in conjunction with the CIE curriculum provides opportunities for varied student personalities. The Curriculum: Cambridge IGCSE (International General Certificate of Secondary Education) subjects can be equated to Grade 10/11, and the AS Level (Advanced Subsidiary) subjects can be equated to Grade 12. The minimum structure consists of: 5 Subjects at the IGCSE level 2 Subjects at the AS level YEAR 1 (all subjects at IGCSE Level) Compulsory: - English First Language Choose 4: (at least 2 must correspond to AS level subjects in Year 2) - Business Studies Development Studies Commercial Studies Economics - Travel & Tourism Afrikaans Art & Design ICT YEAR 2 (subjects at IGCSE and AS Levels) Choose 2 AS level subjects: English First Language Business Studies Travel & Tourism - - Afrikaans Art & Design Choose 2 IGCSE level subjects: Any 2 not taken in year 1 Commerce (ELMI reserves the right to withdraw a subject should there be insufficient demand or as a result of timetabling clashes) PLEASE NOTE: Commercial Studies must be taken first in Year 1 before Commerce can be done in Year 2 Minimum requirements for a Senior Certificate Equivalent: 5 x IGCSE and 2 x AS Level subjects with a minimum grade of E, alternatively: 3 x IGCSE with a minimum grade C and 2 x AS Level subjects with a minimum grade of E On successful completion of all 7 subjects you are eligible to apply to SAQA (South African Qualifications Authority) for a South African Senior Certificate equivalent excluding Matric exemption. The Calendar: The academic year is divided into two semesters with examination sessions held in May and October of each year. Assessment is in the form of a series of internal tests and assignments during the semester, followed by a final Cambridge examination written on the campus in either May or October, depending on each subject. Classes are held daily and the timetable resembles that of a regular school schedule. The learning environment is relaxed and friendly, but strict adherence to the Code of Conduct is demanded. You may elect to defer payment over 10 months payable in instalments from February to November. The Registration Fee is payable annually by all students and is not refundable. The Initial payment must be paid two days before classes commence. Deferred payment plans must be approved by Management. Such payments are to be made by cash at the institution or direct bank deposits, card or bank transfers (EFT), using the student number as reference. In order to confirm enrolment for 2016, students must pay at least the registration fee and the initial payment – this must be done two days before classes commence. Additional Cambridge fees payable in June 2016: Due to exchange rate fluctuations, we are obliged to quote the following costs separately from the tuition fees stated above. At the time of making this payment, ELMI will assist the account payer as follows: ELMI will determine the exchange rate at the time payment is due. The Account Payer will forward these funds in SA Rand to ELMI who will make payment to CIE (UK). Other Additional Costs: Students who decide to take Travel and Tourism on an AS Level will be required to go on tour as part of their coursework, as well as related excursions. The account payer will be responsible for all costs related to the above. Art and Design students will be required to pay R450.00 annually together with the course deposit for materials and related teaching and learning requirements. The cost of supplementary examinations and the conversion of the final CIE results statement to the South African National Senior Certificate equivalent are at the cost of the student.
