FITNESS & HEALTH FORUM: RESOLVE TO TAKE PRIDE IN YOURSELF! Well it's that time of year again! Happy New Year!! Did you make a New Year's Resolution yet? Well, here are some important healthy hygiene pointers that all of us should be practicing everyday all year round. HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS CORRECTLY: This should be done every time you go to the bathroom and of course when you are going to eat something. 1. Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the water isn't too hot for your little hands. 2. Use soap and lather up for 10 to 15 seconds. Make sure you get in-between your fingers and under your nails where uninvited germs like to hang out. 3. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel. BRUSHING YOUR TEETH : Dentists say that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 minutes twice a day. Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth when you don't brush, yuck! CARING FOR YOUR EARS: As body parts go, your ears don't ask for much. They don't need to be brushed like your teeth or trimmed like your toenails. All your ears need is to be washed regularly, so wash them with warm water and soap while you're washing the rest of your body in the bath or shower. CARING FOR YOUR HAIR: Washing your hair every other day can help keep your hair looking healthy and clean. There are dozens of shampoos on drugstore or supermarket shelves for you to choose from. There are also many types of conditioners for you to use to help keep the knots and tangles out of your hair. Remember, you have to brush it after you wash it! TAKING A SHOWER: The best way to keep clean is to bathe or shower everyday using a mild soap and warm water. Wearing clean clothes, socks, and underwear each day can also help you to feel clean. Try to practice all of these healthy hygiene pointers and resolve to take pride in yourself by practicing proper hygiene. Mrs. Stark & Mrs. D'Ortenzio, Physical Education/Health Teachers THE SENECA SCOOP 6 P.S. 88Q: JANUARY 2014 .......................................SCHOOL NEWS....................................... A SAFE & CARING SCHOOL: BULLYING The theme this month will be BULLYING. In a world where conflict and violence have a daily presence, the ability to empathize is vital. Children who lack the skills of empathy and compassion may have difficulty with impulse control, which can lead to conflict. With the appropriate skills, the amount of conflicts can be reduced. Our children will learn to care if we make time to model empathy. P.S. 88’s Safe & Caring School Committee JANUARYS’ SAFE AND CARING OBJECTIVES: This month students will learn to understand and accept people because of what they have on the inside. Doaa Abdullah 5-404 GRADUATING THIS JUNE I am going to really miss this school when I graduate this June. P.S. 88 is a really great school. If anyone should now that it's me. I have been in P.S. 88 since Pre-K. I remember all the good times I had in Pre-K. My favorite thing to do was to play in the sand box. In 3rd grade my teacher was Mrs. Conway. I used to do art, games, and music, in her class. Sadly, she retired. Now I am in 5th grade. I have a great teacher, Mrs. Molina. She is wonderful! I also have a great social studies teacher, science teacher, two great gym teachers, and a super principal. From all of these PS88 adults, I am learning to be the best I can be. Dylan Rudowski 5-404 THE SENECA SCOOP 8 P.S. 88Q: JANUARY 2014 .......................................SCHOOL NEWS....................................... 5TH GRADE IS THE BEST I will be graduating this spring from P.S. 88. My greatest memories of the school have been during 5th grade. One of my favorite was the party we had for Cultural Day. We each cooked a dish to represent the different countries we come from. It was special to me because we where able to show how unique and special individuals we are. I will also remember all my friends, cool classes, and teachers I have had this year. My favorite teacher is Mrs. Molina, my amazing classroom teacher. Mrs. Molina makes writing very interesting because she allows us to put our personalities in our writing. I also enjoy Social Studies with Mr. Mintz. He makes social studies exciting by allowing us to act out our power point lessons. Last but not least my friends are always there for me and I hope it continues when I leave here. Jalynn Buchanan 5-404 MISSING MANY THINGS This year I will be graduating from 5th grade. There will be so many things that I will miss from PS88. I liked being in Newspaper Club and Law Club with Mr. Mintz. He teaches us in the funniest way. I will also miss my friends because they understand me and I grew up with some of them since Kindergarten. Finally, and most importantly, I will miss all of my teachers from when I was in Kindergarten all the way until right now in 5th grade. I hope that when I go to middle school and I spend a few years there, I will feel the same way as I feel in PS 88. Hailey Greene 5-404 GREAT MEMORIES I am a 5th grader who will soon be graduating. I will leave this school with many great memories. One of my favorite memories happened in the first grade when my whole class went to Farmer’s Oval to celebrate the end of the school year. We had so much fun!! Another great memory was at the end of fourth grade when our entire class sang to our parents to thank them for all they do for us. Finally, I can never forget all my great friends and especially my best friend Mariah who I met in 4th grade. Good-bye P.S. 88. WRITING NEATER Have you made your resolution for 2015 yet? I have, and mine is to write neater. That might not sound like a big deal for some people but it is for me! When I write, my thoughts come out to quick. I can't keep up! Other times, I know what to write but I might forget. So, what I do is write quickly so I do not lose my thought and then my writing becomes a sloppy disaster. I can admit it ... I rush through my work sometimes. I have great ideas and a great imagination when I write. I want people to be able to read it though without questioning me on what it says. Starting this month, I will practice writing neater and slower everyday until my handwriting is perfect and people can read it easily. I know I can do it!! Elissa Staib 3-203 DANCE WINNER My goal for 2015 is to “place” at the USA Dance Nationals. I can't disappoint my teachers and my parents. They always wish me the best. First I have to qualify. I hope I'll pass that part! I've been practicing for the whole year. Last year’s competition took place in Baltimore, MD. I came in 2nd place and I was very proud of myself. I was dancing in Pre-Teen 2 (age 10 & 11) Bronze category. This year will be more challenging because my teachers want me to compete in a higher level, but the same age category. I'll be dancing in Pre-Teen 2, Silver and Gold. I hope I'll get into the finals. I know it's not going to be easy. There will be a lot of great dancing couples that I would have to compete with. WISH ME LUCK!!! Veronica Ludwiszewski 3-203 MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION I have many resolutions for 2015. I’m going to stop being mean and rude to my parents. Another goal is to be more independent and study a little bit more. I will also try to get better grades in school. I would like to go to my favorite place in the world, Poland, to visit my grandmother and my family who live there. Going to Poland helps me to speak better Polish. I hope that all my resolutions will come true in 2015. Happy New Year’s to everyone!! Matthew Rozowski 3-203 GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME My New Year's resolution is to get to school on time and this is how I will do it.
