UNIQUE TIMES
My partner (Sarah) and I (Liliana) interviewed Ms. Lucas about her new program here at
P.S. 88 called Unique Times. Ms. Lucas informed us that, “Unique was created to support
students with a variety of needs. Parents and teachers came together to brainstorm about how
to help all students have a bright future.” Unique Times has many different components. At
www.P.S88Q.com you can view a special section of the website to learn about our upcoming
events. Students can even apply for unique jobs. We also have a Unique Times paper that goes
out to all teachers and staff and we are working with the Seneca Scoop to include a Unique
Times student edition.
Ms. Lucas added, “Children inspire me every day. They are the reason behind all of my
decisions. Through a discussion with Ms. Stark, Unique Times was born and it has come to life
because of all the staff here! This unique initiative would not be possible without the support of
every teacher and paraprofessional who has participated in all of the meetings. Parents and
students are also critical members!”
In conclusion, Ms. Lucas said, “It takes a village to be successful and I look forward to
seeing what our incredible community can achieve together. Every child is different and has so
much to offer. Sometimes our gifts are expressed in unique ways. I wanted the title to celebrate
our differences in a way that is celebratory and special.”

OFFICE OUTTAKES
I want to wish everyone a Happy, Healthy New Year. I am hoping that 2015 is a great
year for all. If you changed your address and/or telephone number, you must come up to the
office and see Mrs. Williams. You cannot only change the information on the Blue Emergency

As a reminder, parents/guardians, it is important to make sure that your child’s
Emergency Blue Card is up-to-date and that all telephone numbers are in working order.
Parents/Guardians please be advised that if your child tells us that he or she is going home with
someone, we will not take his or her word for it. You will need to write a note to your child’s
teacher or call the school to inform us of who the person is picking up your child. Please
remember that the person must be 18 years of age or older. No one under the age of 18 will be
able to sign out a student. Students should be on time to school. The school day starts

FITNESS & HEALTH FORUM: RESOLVE TO TAKE PRIDE IN YOURSELF!
Well it's that time of year again! Happy New Year!! Did you make a New Year's
Resolution yet? Well, here are some important healthy hygiene pointers that all of us should be
practicing everyday all year round.
HOW TO WASH YOUR HANDS CORRECTLY:
This should be done every time you go to the bathroom and of course when you are
going to eat something.
1. Wash your hands in warm water. Make sure the water isn't too hot for your little hands.
2. Use soap and lather up for 10 to 15 seconds. Make sure you get in-between your fingers and
under your nails where uninvited germs like to hang out.
3. Rinse and dry well with a clean towel.
BRUSHING YOUR TEETH :
Dentists say that the minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 minutes
twice a day. Bad breath is caused by odor-producing bacteria that grow in the mouth when you
don't brush, yuck!
CARING FOR YOUR EARS:
As body parts go, your ears don't ask for much. They don't need to be brushed like your
teeth or trimmed like your toenails. All your ears need is to be washed regularly, so wash them
with warm water and soap while you're washing the rest of your body in the bath or shower.
CARING FOR YOUR HAIR:
Washing your hair every other day can help keep your hair looking healthy and clean.
There are dozens of shampoos on drugstore or supermarket shelves for you to choose from.
There are also many types of conditioners for you to use to help keep the knots and tangles out
of your hair. Remember, you have to brush it after you wash it!
TAKING A SHOWER:
The best way to keep clean is to bathe or shower everyday using a mild soap and warm
water. Wearing clean clothes, socks, and underwear each day can also help you to feel clean.
Try to practice all of these healthy hygiene pointers and resolve to take pride in yourself
by practicing proper hygiene.

A SAFE & CARING SCHOOL: BULLYING
The theme this month will be BULLYING. In a world where conflict and violence have a
daily presence, the ability to empathize is vital. Children who lack the skills of empathy and
compassion may have difficulty with impulse control, which can lead to conflict. With the
appropriate skills, the amount of conflicts can be reduced. Our children will learn to care if we
make time to model empathy.
P.S. 88’s Safe & Caring School Committee
JANUARYS’ SAFE AND CARING OBJECTIVES:
This month students will learn to understand and accept people because of what they
have on the inside. Students will also practice empathy skills as they learn the importance of
compassion and kindness.
P.S. 88’s Safe & Caring School Committee
SAFE & CARING VOCABULARY AND WORD FIND
Learning Objectives:
Students will:
 Be introduced to vocabulary that supports caring about others and preventing bullying
behaviors
 Internalize the vocabulary as they use it throughout the month and year in real-life
situations

GUIDANCE GRAPEVINE: GREAT WEBSITES
We want to wish everyone at P.S. 88, a happy and healthy New Year. In honor of the
festive season, the Guidance Grapevine would like to dedicate a poem about respect to all the
good people in our lives.
Respect People
Respect people of all ages:
Those who teach you honesty
Those who help you see farther
And understand more
Those who are kind to others
And are honorable,
Gentle,
Loving,
Courageous
Loyal and fair
Honor the good people
In your life with respect
You are blessed by them
They help direct your path
And guide your way
May you start the new year off with a smile, a greeting, a helping hand, a pleasant
encounter at school, a thoughtful gesture in the supermarket, a thank you a wave to a neighbor,
all of these respectful actions serve to give our days. Peace and harmony always!

GRADUATING IN JUNE
I will really miss this school when I graduate this June. P.S. 88 has many of my childhood
memories. My whole family grew up here and so did I. I will really miss my teachers. I will miss
the way people are safe and caring and I want to also thank Mr. Quintana for saying that
sentence every day on the announcements when he talks. Now everybody is full of kindness
and love, thank you for that. I wish this school had Grades 6-9 so I could stay!! I really don't
want to leave this school. I love it here!!
Doaa Abdullah 5-404
GRADUATING THIS JUNE
I am going to really miss this school when I graduate this June. P.S. 88 is a really great
school. If anyone should now that it's me. I have been in P.S. 88 since Pre-K. I remember all the
good times I had in Pre-K. My favorite thing to do was to play in the sand box. In 3rd grade my
teacher was Mrs. Conway. I used to do art, games, and music, in her class. Sadly, she retired.
Now I am in 5th grade. I have a great teacher, Mrs. Molina. She is wonderful! I also have a great
social studies teacher, science teacher, two great gym teachers, and a super principal. From all
of these PS88 adults, I am learning to be the best I can be.

5TH GRADE IS THE BEST
I will be graduating this spring from P.S. 88. My greatest memories of the school have
been during 5th grade. One of my favorite was the party we had for Cultural Day. We each
cooked a dish to represent the different countries we come from. It was special to me because
we where able to show how unique and special individuals we are.
I will also remember all my friends, cool classes, and teachers I have had this year. My
favorite teacher is Mrs. Molina, my amazing classroom teacher. Mrs. Molina makes writing very
interesting because she allows us to put our personalities in our writing. I also enjoy Social
Studies with Mr. Mintz. He makes social studies exciting by allowing us to act out our power
point lessons. Last but not least my friends are always there for me and I hope it continues when
I leave here.
Jalynn Buchanan 5-404
MISSING MANY THINGS
This year I will be graduating from 5th grade. There will be so many things that I will miss
from PS88. I liked being in Newspaper Club and Law Club with Mr. Mintz. He teaches us in the
funniest way. I will also miss my friends because they understand me and I grew up with some
of them since Kindergarten. Finally, and most importantly, I will miss all of my teachers from
when I was in Kindergarten all the way until right now in 5th grade. I hope that when I go to
middle school and I spend a few years there, I will feel the same way as I feel in PS 88.
Hailey Greene 5-404
GREAT MEMORIES
I am a 5th grader who will soon be graduating. I will leave this school with many great
memories. One of my favorite memories happened in the first grade when my whole class went
to Farmer’s Oval to celebrate the end of the school year. We had so much fun!! Another great
memory was at the end of fourth grade when our entire class sang to our parents to thank them
for all they do for us. Finally, I can never forget all my great friends and especially my best friend
Mariah who I met in 4th grade. Good-bye P.S. 88.

WRITING NEATER
Have you made your resolution for 2015 yet? I have, and mine is to write neater. That
might not sound like a big deal for some people but it is for me! When I write, my thoughts
come out to quick. I can't keep up! Other times, I know what to write but I might forget. So,
what I do is write quickly so I do not lose my thought and then my writing becomes a sloppy
disaster. I can admit it ... I rush through my work sometimes. I have great ideas and a great
imagination when I write. I want people to be able to read it though without questioning me on
what it says. Starting this month, I will practice writing neater and slower everyday until my
handwriting is perfect and people can read it easily. I know I can do it!!
Elissa Staib 3-203
DANCE WINNER
My goal for 2015 is to “place” at the USA Dance Nationals. I can't disappoint my
teachers and my parents. They always wish me the best. First I have to qualify. I hope I'll pass
that part! I've been practicing for the whole year. Last year’s competition took place in
Baltimore, MD. I came in 2nd place and I was very proud of myself. I was dancing in Pre-Teen 2
(age 10 & 11) Bronze category. This year will be more challenging because my teachers want me
to compete in a higher level, but the same age category. I'll be dancing in Pre-Teen 2, Silver and
Gold. I hope I'll get into the finals. I know it's not going to be easy. There will be a lot of great
dancing couples that I would have to compete with. WISH ME LUCK!!!
Veronica Ludwiszewski 3-203
MY NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION
I have many resolutions for 2015. I’m going to stop being mean and rude to my parents.
Another goal is to be more independent and study a little bit more. I will also try to get better
grades in school. I would like to go to my favorite place in the world, Poland, to visit my
grandmother and my family who live there. Going to Poland helps me to speak better Polish. I
hope that all my resolutions will come true in 2015. Happy New Year’s to everyone!!
Matthew Rozowski 3-203
GETTING TO SCHOOL ON TIME
My New Year's resolution is to get to school on time and this is how I will do it. I will
wake up a few minutes earlier and eat my breakfast without watching television so I won't get
distracted. I will also learn a faster way to tie my shoes and practice it so I can leave sooner.
Stone Johnson 3-203
EXERCISING
My New Year's Resolution is to exercise more. I want to run faster and get stronger. I
also desire to correctly perform push-ups. Exercising is healthy for my mind and body, so I'm
going to use every opportunity to practice running at the park and do my best in the gym class
that I have twice a week. Happy Exercising and a Happy and Healthy New Year in 2015!

FOCUS
I have a few resolutions for this year. I want to focus on what I am doing in school and
listen to the teacher’s instructions. At home, I’ll try to not get distracted while I am doing my
homework. For my personal resolution, I’ll try to spend more time with my family and friends.
I’ll also try to do my best so I can succeed in everything. Happy 2015!!!
Angie Zapata 3-203
BECOMING A BETTER WRITER
My New Year’s resolution is to get better at writing. I want to get better at writing
because I have trouble writing paragraphs and putting details into my work. Writing is difficult,
especially good writing, and I want to be the best writer I can be.
Adrian Jaracz 3-203
I NEED TO STOP BREAKING THINGS
This year my New Year’s resolution will be to stop breaking things. So far, I have broken
a computer, a drawer, my friend’s heart, and more! When I broke all of these things I hurt a lot
of people's feelings. When this happens, I feel frustrated in myself. This has been a hard year. I
will try very hard not break things in 2015. HAPPY NEW YEAR EVERYONE!!
Viktoria Pepaj 3-203
IMPROVING IN MATH
For my New Year’s resolution, I would like to improve in math. I would like to improve
in math because I've been having trouble with my 6, 7, and 8 times tables. For the coming year,
this is going to be my main focus and goal. Math and I will be best friends.
Jeanine Cornet 3-203
WORK HABITS
My New Year’s resolution is to work more efficiently in school. I would like to be better
at reading and writing, because I want to do well on the state test. I really need to work on
finishing any task on time. I also have to improve my concentration and stay focused on what I
am doing and not get distracted. I want to be better and faster in my work in 2015!

HOT BEVERAGE FOR A COLD DAY
My partners and I (Nicole) conducted a survey with some students in Grades 3-5 to
figure out what their favorite beverage is to drink during a cold winter day. The choices were:
hot chocolate, hot coffee, warm milk, hot tea, and hot soup. In first place came hot chocolate
with 201 votes. In second place came hot coffee with 183 votes. In third place came warm milk
with 132 votes. In fourth place came hot soup with 95 votes. In last place came hot tea with 54
votes. We all voted for hot chocolate!
