• What is the ratio of polygons to total figures?

What is the ratio of parallelograms to triangles?

Create an equivalent ratio by building more sets with the above ratio.

Some equivalent ratios to 1:2 are 2:4, 3:6, and 4:8.

Some equivalent ratios to 3:4 are 6 to 8,

9 to 12, and 12 to 16.

Explain why the ratio 2:3 and

4:6 represent the same relationship.

How are the concepts of equivalent ratios and equivalent fractions similar?

In the diagram above, 2/5 of the counters in the top row are red; however, 4/10 of the counters are red, so 2/5 = 4/10.

What is the ratio of blue marbles to total number of marbles?

How many blue marbles would you expect in 100 selections?

Sue received 36 votes and John received

9 votes. Write as many equivalent ratios as you can to represent this information:

• 36 : 9 or 4:1 (Sue received 4 votes for every

1 vote for John)

• 9:36 or 1:4 (John received 1 vote for every

4 votes for Sue)

• 36:45 or 4:5 (Sue received 4 votes for every

5 votes cast)

• 9:45 or 1:5 (John received 1 vote for every

5 votes cast)

A ratio shows a relationship between two amounts. The ratio

2:3 might represent 2 red circles compared to 3 blue triangles. One type of ratio is a fraction. This is a ratio where a part is compared to the whole. In the fraction 2/3 an object such as a circle is subdivided into 3 equal parts and 2 of these are shaded.

A ratio might also involve the comparison of two quantities or amounts that have different units.

These ratios are called rates. For example, at the store, 2 oranges sell for $1.00. The rate is 2/

$1.00. How many oranges could you buy with $5.00?
