Memorial Day 2010
There's a beautiful song from the 1960's that has a very powerful and
haunting melody. It's not a patriotic song, but it is very appropriate
for our celebration of Memorial Day. The song comes from the musical
"The Fantastiks" and is named: "Try to Remember." And that
precisely is what we do on Memorial Day....we try to remember the
men and women who loved our American nation so much that they gave
up their lives so that we could live in freedom.
Throughout American history, there have always been courageous
people whose honor and integrity led them to think more of others
than of themselves. And so we gather together on Memorial Day in
parks, at flagpoles, in churches, or even in the peace and privacy of
our own homes, to remember the sacrifices of the men and women
throughout our American history who have given their lives so that
you and I could live in freedom. Their dedication to honor and duty
and integrity is worth remembering and worth honoring as we
remember it. Never forget that our liberty always comes at a price.
And by association, on Memorial Day, we also remember all those
veterans who have served and survived in America's wars in this
century: World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian
Gulf, and all the other international conflicts in which we have been
involved. And we remember all those Missing in Action (MIA's) and
those Prisoners of War (POW's) who have never come home to
America.
We should also be mindful of those men and women who currently
serve in our ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINE CORPS, and COAST
GUARD in the global war against terrorism today. The tragic events of
September 11, 2001, serve as a powerful reminder that America's
freedom is still in need of defense today.
We remember and we pray for all those who serve our nation. As the
refrain from "Try to Remember" says: "Try to remember, and if you
remember, then follow, follow..." May we remember and follow the
faith and the honor and the integrity of those who we honor on this
Memorial Day 2010. And may God bless them for their courage and
strength and good example.
See you in church!
Father Charlie

RELICS of ST. PIO of Pietrelcina
JUNE 16 to 26th, 2010
St. Pio’s hair & cloth used by Saint Pio of Pietrelcina to
wipe the five wounds of his stigmata. Holy Relics of St. Pio
brought to the valley by Fr. GianMaria Digiorgio from San
Giovanni Rotondo FOGGIA, Italy.
Please join us in the closing of the “Year of the Priest” Holy
Sacrifice of the Mass with Bishop Joseph A. Pepe at the Shrine
of the Most Holy Redeemer, commencing at 6 p.m. on
Saturday, June 19th, 2010. For information and schedule,
please call (702) 985-3144.
The arrival of the relics of Saint Pio is a moment of grace
for all the faithful and devotees, but is also a spiritual presence
of the Saint on American soil where his father, Orazio
Forgione, came to work to earn enough money to pay for the
studies of the young Francesco, who then entered the Order of
the Capuchins taking the name Brother Pio, today Saint Pio of
Pietrelcina.

Parish Registration: In order that we may better serve you, please
register in the parish. This way you are known to us when
requesting the services of the church. Registration forms are
available in the literature rack in the vestibule or on the parish web
site. Also, please notify the parish office of changes of address,
phone, or e-mail, or if you are moving out of the area. Changes can
be emailed to sedler@stfrancishenderson.org or simply drop a note
in the collection basket.
♦
Baptism: Baptisms for infants to six year olds are celebrated on the
second and fourth Sundays of most months at 1:00 p.m. Parents
should attend the baptism class usually held on the third Monday of
the month at 7:00 p.m. and then meet with one of the priests to
schedule the baptism. Next class: Monday, June 21st at 7:00
p.m. Contact Debbie Ely at 914-2175 for an appointment with one
of the priests.
♦
Marriage: Couples planning marriage should contact the parish as
soon as they become engaged because at least six months is
ordinarily necessary to fulfill marriage preparation requirements. At
least one party must be a registered, participating member of the
parish. The first step is for both parties to attend the Marriage
Information Meeting on the fourth Thursday of most months at 6:30
p.m. Next meeting: June 24th. After that meeting, contact
Debbie for an appointment with one of the priests.
Important: Those with prior marriages, religious or civil, must make
an appointment with a priest prior to attending the Marriage
Information Meeting to determine freedom to marry. (This
requirement does not apply to those who are widowed.)
♦
Anointing of the Sick: The priest will often be able to anoint you
after Mass (except 7:45 a.m. Saturday & 4:00 p.m. Saturday
Mass). Please call the parish if you need to receive the anointing of
the sick at home. In emergency situations when the office is closed,
the answering service will relay the information to one of the priests.
In case of hospitalization, let the hospital staff know that you would
like to have the Catholic priest chaplain see you.
♦
Holy Communion to the Sick: If you are at home, please call the
parish office and an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion will
visit you. In case of hospitalization, inform the hospital staff that
you are a Catholic and would like to receive Holy Communion.
♦
Mass Intentions: Mass requests are scheduled through the parish
office during office hours up to 11 months in advance.
♦
Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament: Adoration of the Blessed
Sacrament is celebrated on the first Friday of the month following
the 7:45 a.m. Mass and concluding with Evening Prayer and
Benediction at 6:30 p.m.
♦
Funerals: In the event of the death of a loved one, please contact the
parish before making arrangements with a mortuary. The parish
does not make funeral arrangements with the mortuary or other
businesses but only with loved ones of the deceased.
♦
House Blessings: For those who are new to our area, house
blessings are available by appointment. Please register in the parish
before requesting your house to be blessed.
♦
Car Blessings: The priest is available to bless your new car after
most Masses (except Saturdays at 7:45 a.m. & 4:00 p.m.).
