It's not a patriotic song, but it is very appropriate for our celebration of Memorial Day. The song comes from the musical "The Fantastiks" and is named: "Try to Remember." And that precisely is what we do on Memorial Day....we try to remember the men and women who loved our American nation so much that they gave up their lives so that we could live in freedom. Throughout American history, there have always been courageous people whose honor and integrity led them to think more of others than of themselves. And so we gather together on Memorial Day in parks, at flagpoles, in churches, or even in the peace and privacy of our own homes, to remember the sacrifices of the men and women throughout our American history who have given their lives so that you and I could live in freedom. Their dedication to honor and duty and integrity is worth remembering and worth honoring as we remember it. Never forget that our liberty always comes at a price. And by association, on Memorial Day, we also remember all those veterans who have served and survived in America's wars in this century: World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, and all the other international conflicts in which we have been involved. And we remember all those Missing in Action (MIA's) and those Prisoners of War (POW's) who have never come home to America. We should also be mindful of those men and women who currently serve in our ARMY, NAVY, AIR FORCE, MARINE CORPS, and COAST GUARD in the global war against terrorism today. The tragic events of September 11, 2001, serve as a powerful reminder that America's freedom is still in need of defense today. We remember and we pray for all those who serve our nation. As the refrain from "Try to Remember" says: "Try to remember, and if you remember, then follow, follow..." May we remember and follow the faith and the honor and the integrity of those who we honor on this Memorial Day 2010. And may God bless them for their courage and strength and good example. See you in church!
