The Ludowici legacy of old-world craftsmanship started 400 years ago in Rome, Italy where the
Ludovisi family became famous for its expertly crafted clay roof tile. As European demand grew,
the family moved to Germany and their name was changed to the Germanized Ludowici. In the
late 1800’s, Carl Ludowici moved the family and his old-world craftsmanship to America
establishing a terra cotta roof tile company in Chicago, Illinois.
In the early 1900’s, the Ludowici Roof Tile Company prospered. Eventually, all Ludowici terra
cotta tile making operations were consolidated into a single facility in New Lexington, Ohio. More
than a century later, Ludowici continues to produce a limitless array of terra cotta colors and
profiles to fit vast architectural styles. Ludowici’s unique custom capabilities allow architects and
designers to create durable, inspiring architecture utilizing a truly unlimited terra cotta palette.
With a life span of over 100 years, a Ludowici terra cotta product is not only beautiful but is one of
the most sustainable and green construction products available. With over 120 years of
experience, Ludowici has grown into the industry leader for clay roof tile, terra cotta wall tiles,
quarry tiles and decorative terra cotta finials.
Since 1888, Ludowici has been protecting buildings large and small with applications ranging
from commercial to university, government to military, bungalows to mansions, locally and
globally. Ludowici terra cotta roof tiles are the sensible and sustainable building product choice.
Every Ludowici terra cotta tile is produced using proven technology creating a finished product
which meets the needs of both yesterday and the future.
Today, Ludowici continues to operate in it’s original manufacturing facility in New Lexington,
Ohio. Ludowici Roof Tile proudly represents Ohio as one of the oldest continuous operating
businesses.

AREA INFO
1440 WOODHILL ˙ NORTHBROOK
ABOUT NORTHBROOK
The earliest recorded residents of the Northbrook area were the
Potawatomi tribe under Chief Shabbona. In 1833 the tribe ceded their
land in Illinois and relocated near Council Bluffs, Iowa. Joel Sterling
Sherman and his family bought 159 acres for $1.25 per acre in the
northwest quarter of Section 10. This is the site of the Northbrook
Central Business District.
Soon after Mr. Sherman bought that land the area was named
Shermerville after Mr. Frederick Schermer who donated the land for
the first railroad station (Schermer Station and later Shermer Station).
By the 1870’s the region was a farm town with well-established brick
yards which prospered during the rebuilding that followed the Great
Chicago Fire in October of 1871.
In 1901 following a close referendum, the town was incorporated as
Shermerville with about 60 homes and 311 residents. By 1921, residents
felt that the Shermerville name had a bad reputation. After a contest,
the new name of Northbrook, submitted by Edward Landwehr, was
adopted as the official name in 1923. At that time there were 500
residents.
Northbrook did not grow rapidly until after World War II when
subdivisions of homes were first developed. In 1940 the population was
1,265, but by 1960 the population was 11,635. Another growth spurt was
stimulated by the completion in 1963 of a water line to bring Lake
Michigan water to Northbrook’s new water treatment plant. By 1970
the population had more than doubled to 25,422. The current
population is 33,435 (2000 census).

Principal's Welcome Message
Welcome to Meadowbrook! Welcome to Meadowbrook School, a kindergarten-grade 5 school of
approximately 365 students located in Northbrook SD 28. Meadowbrook’s staff is committed to
working with parents and students collaboratively to best meet the needs of our students. Our
students are involved in reading and writing workshops daily, as part of a comprehensive literacy
model. In addition, students participate in math and science or social studies classes each day.
We provide innovative instruction that engages students in thinking critically about their reading,
writing and problem solving. We are looking forward to our second year of Extended Day
Kindergarten at Meadowbrook. This program offers kindergarten students the opportunity to
spend the entire school day at Meadowbrook. Also, this is the second year kindergarten students
will participate in art, music and physical education classes weekly for the entire school year.
In addition to our core academic programs, we offer a Blue Ribbon award-winning daily physical
education program that is health-based, as well as weekly lessons in music, art, technology,
science lab, library and our social-emotional literacy program, Leader in Me. Our program is
comprehensive and focused on developing the whole child.
In an effort to help all students reach their full potential, we have a large and diverse staff
dedicated to meeting their needs. Our staff at Meadowbrook uses Love and Logic strategies to
create a positive learning environment for students. Love and Logic allows students to grow
through their mistakes. It also allows them to learn from the consequences of their choices. In
addition to excellent classroom teachers, we have a talented staff that includes multiple learning
resource teachers and reading specialists, a social worker, a school psychologist, an ELL teacher,
an EXCEL coordinator, a math interventionist, speech and language pathologists and a
technology integration specialist. An instructional assistant is also assigned to each classroom to
support students in the classroom and lunchroom, as well as on the playground.
At Meadowbrook, we utilize a Response to Intervention framework so that all students receive
high quality support matched to individual needs and goals. Individual progress is monitored
frequently to insure that instruction is having the desired effect. We also host a special education
early childhood program that includes students of all abilities on the learning spectrum.
We are fortunate to enjoy tremendous support from our parents and community. Our Parent
Teacher Organization is an active group throughout the building that provides enrichment
opportunities for our students and their parents. Detailed information about our PTO can be
found via the link on this page.
Meadowbrook is a positive learning community where everyone is committed to working
together for the success of all students. We are extremely proud of our school and know you’ll be
impressed by what you experience. If you have any questions or would like to contact me, please
email me at pthome@northbrook28.net . To receive the principal’s weekly newsletter, send an
email to mblistsrv-subscribe@listserv.northbrook28.net and type subscribe in the subject line.

1440 WOODHILL ˙ NORTHBROOK
Principal's Welcome Message - About Northbrook Junior High
On behalf of the faculty and staff of Northbrook Junior High School, I’d like to welcome you to Northbrook
Junior High School. We thank you for visiting our website, and we are glad to have a chance to tell you
about our school. It is our goal to partner with parents to create a learning environment that is engaging,
challenging, and supportive.
Our students consistently score well above average on local and state assessments. In recent years the State
of Illinois has recognized our school as one of the middle schools across the state to receive an Academic
Achievement Award. We are extremely proud to say that at least 90% of our students met or exceeded state
standards in the past four consecutive years, yet we are always looking to improve. Northbrook Junior High
School is in the implementation phase of a district-wide comprehensive literacy initiative which emphasizes
analytical reading and writing skills, critical thinking strategies, and genre studies, all within the reader’s
and writer’s workshop model. We have targeted reading and writing across each of the content areas as one
of our school improvement goals.
Here at Northbrook Junior High we have a ten-period day that includes a 30-minute X-Block period. Sixth
through eighth graders complete a core curriculum in language arts, math, science, and social studies, as
well as a foreign language (Spanish or French) or a resource support period. Students are also provided with
opportunities to explore elective interests in art, drama, music, woodworking, technology, or family and
consumer science. Additionally, we have physical education for all grades, with one quarter each year
devoted to health and wellness.
During X-Block, students develop study skills, complete homework, and develop a sense of community.
This block of time is used to provide academic intervention support in math and literacy. It also serves as a
monthly time for X-Block teachers to hold social emotional literacy discussions with students and organize
group activities to reinforce those themes.
Before school we offer an instrumental music program which includes band, orchestra, and choir. A recent
renovation project created three new music spaces for the daily rehearsals. Our school’s performance
groups are consistently recognized locally, regionally, and statewide with superior ratings. Thanks to our
dedicated staff and supportive PTO, NBJH students can also participate in a variety of extra-curricular clubs
and activities throughout the year.
Our teachers are highly qualified professionals committed to excellence in education. They will build on
your children’s current skills and help them develop the academic, social, and emotional skills they need to
be successful in school and in life. They exemplify the District 28 motto of “Teaching, Learning, Caring.”
We are also fortunate to work in collaboration with parents who offer valuable support for our efforts at
home. Our school benefits from an active PTO, which supervises our school store, sponsors class field trips
and social events, and coordinates a career day every other year.
We are very proud of the accomplishments of our students and school. We encourage you to visit the
school to see for yourself why our teachers, parents, and students make Northbrook Junior High School a
great place to learn and grow. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. I can be reached by email at
smeek@northbrook28.net or by calling (847) 504-3501.
