Students took turns reading the handout out loud in class, and after each paragraph the content of what they read was reviewed and explained in more simplistic language. CLASS 2: 2) The Periodic Table of Elements (in English) was passed out to the students. Various elements were examined and key vocabulary such as electrons, protons, and neutrons was reviewed. 3) Using the interactive website http://www.classzone.com/books/earth_science/terc/content/investigations/es0501/es0 501page04.cfm, students were able to take turns building their own atoms. CLASS 3: 4) Students completed the crossword puzzle on the elements in pairs and reviewed the answers with the rest of the class. 5) Students then completed the story “The Gold Dust Kid” in groups of 6 and reviewed the answers with the rest of the class. CLASS 4: 6) To familiarize the students with images and daily uses of the elements, they then worked in groups of 6 to complete the Element Photo Quiz. 7) Students were informed of the final project of the unit, to make Element Dominoes. Preparation for the project required organization of groups and division of tasks (printing, laminating, cutting, etc) CLASS 5: 8) Students worked in the computer lab creating the dominoes using images and the names of the elements in English. Students must bring in printed, laminated, and cut dominoes for next class. CLASS 6: 9) Students bring in their completed set of dominoes and play Element Dominoes. Valoració The overall unit has been very successful in both motivating the students to express themselves in English as well as better their understanding of the world around them through science. Additionally, culminating the unit with a fun, interactive project or game has given them a sense of accomplishment and made them look forward to class. Although the lecture and the handout that went along with it (Class 1, “Atoms = Building Blocks”) contained vocabulary and sentence structures that were above their English level, supplementing the handout with visual explanations and reviewing the content of the reading made sure that the material came across clearly.
