THE PARTICULARS OF ORGANIZATION, FUNCTIONS AND DUTIES OF THE HOME(JAIL) DEPARTMENT :- NAME OF THE DEPARTMENT: Home(Jail) Department. 1. Brief Facts The Central jail, Agartala is located at Dhaleswar, Agartala. In the beginning, only one Central Jail was commissioned but as on date there are total eleven functional Jail- one Central Jail, two District Jails, seven Sub-Jails and one District Female Jail, Agartala. Almost all the District Jails and Sub-Jails have been established after participation of the Tripura State with Union of India and expand maintenance of strict security and discipline inside the Jails. The Central Jail is considered to be one of the best-managed prisons in the Tripura. Besides this reformative and correctional programmes for the prisoners have been undertaken. The founder of the Jail was His Excellency Maharaj Birchandra Manikya Bahadur who reformed Royal Prison Administration on the line of British Rules. In Tripura there are 11(eleven) Jails, namely Central Jail, Agartala, District Jail, Kailashahar and Udaipur, Sub-Jails Dharmanagar, Kamalpur, Khowai, Sonamura, Belonia, Amarpur, Sabroom and Female Jail adjacent to Central jail, Agartala. (i) The Central Jail, Agartala is manned by the Superintendent with one Chief Welfare Officer, one Deputy Superintendent, two Jailors, one Discipline Officer, one Deputy Jailor, three Sub-Jailors and other staff. (ii) The District Jails are manned by the Superintendent and are assisted by the Jailor, Deputy Jailor, Sub-Jailor and other staff. (iii) For all Jails, the Sub-Divisional Magistrates are the Ex-officio Superintendent assisted by Sub-Jailor and other subordinate officers. (iv) The Female Jails, Agartala is supervised by the Superintendent, Central Jail. For all the Jails, the Inspector General of Prisons is the head of the Department CORPORATE OBJECTIVE & FUNCTION OF JAILS: As one of the three wings of criminal justice system (Jail, Police & Judicial), the Jail Department is providing the safe custody for the prisoners both under trails & convicts as and when sent by the competent courts. The Jail Department is responsible for well being of the prisoners & the Department follows the Rules & Regulation of National Human Rights Commission & National Commission for Women. The Jail Department is entrusted with the twin objectives of maintenance of strict security and discipline inside the Jail and implementation of different reformative and correctional programmes for the prison inmates.
