Wait Until Tomorrow TRANSCRIPTION to WAIT UNTIL TOMORROW by JOHN MAYER TRIO - bass by Pino Palladino This week’s main transcription is from John Mayer’s TRY live album featuring Pino on bass. This originally was a Hendrix tune that Mayer covered for this album....and there’s a very improvised feel to it. It’s been something that I’ve been transcribing on - on and off - for several months as Pino is playing with flatwounds and the audio quality makes it hard to hear the bass accurately. There are lots of things to like in this line - for me, the number 1 takeaway is the way that the band are playing together, listening to each other, but yet stretching out in the way the classic rock line ups of the 60s and early 70s did. Listening to this reminded me of Jack Bruce’s description of Cream “Cream was a jazz band, but we never told Eric!” This improvisatory flavour runs through the tune and runs through Pino’s bass line. And that means there’s a lot of material that you could extract from this line! Here’s how the bass line lays out: Letter A - Intro - 0.00 Letter B - Band In 0.09 Letter C - Verse 1 - 0.35 Letter D - Chorus - 0.57 Letter E - Intro Reprise - 1.13 2 | Wait Until Tomorrow | how-to-play-bass.com Letter F - Verse 2 - 1.19 Letter G - Chorus 2 - 1.40 Letter H - Intro Reprise - 1.57 Letter I - Verse 3 - 2.07 Letter J - Chorus - 2.28 Letter K - Chorus - 2.45 Letter L - Guitar Solo - 3.03 As always, the tab reflects my fingering system, hand size and scale length. If any of these differ for you - the probability of which is high then feel free to change the tab positions around to suit YOUR playing system, hand size and bass length. Paul’s Note - Watching Pino play on the live footage from WHERE THE LIGHT IS it’s immediately apparent that Pino is a big guy - and he has massive hands! So some of his intervals are a challenging stretch! 3 | Wait Until Tomorrow | how-to-play-bass.com 4 | Wait Until Tomorrow | how-to-play-bass.com 11 | Wait Until Tomorrow | how-to-play-bass.com
