on an auspicious day (the day of our

1950. It was the first Pakistani Company to start the
manufacture of a local registered and formulated
brand PAKOLA.
Today, it has 3 bottling lines and one canning line
and a sophisticated quality control lab. It has also
been certified for ISO 9001/2000 & HACCP.
With the vision and the mission statement of
continuing as one of the best managed Bottler of
Pakistan's most popular soft drink, PEPSI, Pakistan
Beverage Limited is marching ahead to provide a
high quality product to the consumer and high
quality backup service to the customer in the market

The Company in a very short period of time
established the brand with good presence in the
Karachi market with its different flavours i.e. Ice
Cream Soda, Pakola Orange, Pakola Raspury,
Pakola Leechi etc. Pakola become quite popular not

It added the Orange Crush in the late 50's early 60's,

A
t the birth of Pakistan, the need for
manufacturing bicycles and their spare
parts was instated as a result of a void of
any such facility through the nation. Major
importers, situated mostly around Lahore's major
market of Nila Gumbad initiated the movement of
Nila Gumbad initiated the movement by bringing
in imports for sale to furnish "two-wheeled
transportation" to the nation's population. In 1952, a
foreign exchange shortage gripped the nation
shaping a stringent situation for importers, forcing
them to rethink the imported bicycle's fate. That is
where it all began. Nila Gumbad's "shop masters"
aspired an initiative basis, 22 people laid the
foundations for this Cooperative Society, purposely
registered to provide mutual help and benefits to its
instituting members. This provision provided a
reaffirming ambiance of motivation, for the Society
is progressing rapidly and attaining the success that
it enjoys today, as the principal functionary of its
kind. Initially, only a few spare bicycle parts rolled
production hints, while 90% remained imported. As
progress encouraged growth, the Society
burgeoned, leading to the domestic production of
almost 98% of the total parts found on locally
manufactured bicycles. Procured through Vendors,
the Society now regularly provides spares to all the
bicycle manufacturing units throughout the
country and provides them the components that
produce some of the finest bicycles traveling the
roads, today.
A Motivated Team
A dedicated and competent team achieved recordbreaking targets in 1996-1997 and are now gearing
up to further avenues of progress with the 2000-2001
target set at manufacturing 450,000 bicycles. An
increased production of spare parts will also ensue.
The Society provides its team with numerous
benefits including, medical coverage, group
finance, housing , allowances and bonuses. A "fair
price shop", canteen and dispensary have been
established for the workers, as it is firmly believed
that benefits will keep the work force motivated,
dedicated and passionate about their work. The
Society also furnishes an annual trip to "Mecca", for
four workers to perform "Haj". A regular training
program is scheduled in continuous basis for
increased productivity and efficiency.

Motorcycle Production
A CATIC & JINCHENG Plants, installed with
technical support from China takes the Society into
the business of motorcycle manufacturing. Thus
allows consumers the opportunity to purchase a
premium product at lower prices. Launched in
1995, Pakistan's No. 1 Sohrab Motorcycle is
available throughout the country. The acclaimed
Sohrab's quality and performance have received
widespread appreciation. The Society's recent
launch of its sports model, Sohrab SS 70 brings to

akistan Machine Tool Factory (PMTF) is a
precision and high-tech engineering goods
manufacturing enterprise in Pakistan,
established in technical collaboration with Messrs
Oerlikon Buhrle & Co. of Switzerland who are
world's renowned manufacturers of Machine Tools.
The Factory was inaugurated in November 1968.
More than 50 Swiss Experts while working in PMTF
trained the local management and staff
i.e.
engineers and technicians for about 3 years and
transferred technical know-how regarding
manufacturing of sophisticated products. PMTF
has been certified for ISO 9001 : 2000. Presently 85%
business of PMTF comes from private sector which

Role of the Society
The Society remains a national leader in the bicycle
manufacturing industry. Much of this is owned to

excellence in all their practices. With the production
of "Fancy Bicycles", comes the new-era. Various
types of sports bicycles have been successfully
launched including the "VIP, Student" and the
"Panda".1990's acclaimed "BMX Speed Bicycle"
took the country by storm, followed by 1991's
national favorite, the "Pony". The international class
"Sprinter 10 Speed Racer" was introduced in 1993
while 1994 show the inception of the "Multi-Speed

USA in 1963. GTIC sold its majority shares to

by Continental AG, (which is Germany's # 1 and
world's 4th largest tyre producer) as Continental
purchased GTIC in 1987. GTR has a Technical
Services Agreement (TSA) with Continental which

tyres but keeping in view our road conditions, we
have it in all our passenger car steel belted
tubeless radial tyres and that is why our radial
tyres cover 90,000 to 100,000 Kms on the average, of
course if simple care is taken.
The Head Office / Plant of GTR is situated in
Karachi on a 25 acre plot. Production commenced in
July 1964 and the first tyre rolled out appropriately
on 4th of July. The production capacity of the plant at
that time was merely 120,000 tyres per annum.
This means ensuring air pressure is correct at all
times as per the car manufacturer's
recommendations. Alignment is done twice a year
and tyres rotated (front to back & vice versa) every
10,000 km.
Ever since then the plant has been continuously upgraded and in 1985 a major expansion took place
increasing the capacity to 600,000 tyres per annum.
Production of rear tyres of tractors was also
initiated. In 1987 passenger car radial tyres were
also produced on an experimental basis.
The replacement market sales are channeled
through a network of more then 130 country wide
non-exclusive dealers. The three regional offices are
based in Karachi, Lahore and Islamabad
respectively. A warehouse in Multan has been setup
recently.
The Company now produces over 1.2 million tyres
per annum out of which 50% are steel belted
tubeless car radials while the rest are bias tyres for
cars, vans, light commercial vehicles, trucks, buses
and tractors. 40% of the production goes for
replacement sales and the rest as Original
Equipment on all cars, commercial vehicles and
tractors produced in Pakistan.
The Company backs up all it products with a
comprehensive warranty. It has the best after sales
coverage all over the country. It has opened
Customer Care & Service Centre at Shara-e-Faisal,
Karachi and soon will open two more centres at
Islamabad and Lahore respectively
In order to improve production as well as quality of
tyres, heavy investments are being made in plant,
machineries and equipments.
GTR has exported tyres to Syria (Tractor /
Passenger Car / LCV) and some tractor tyres to
Afghanistan. In the past Formula III racing car tyres
were also exported to U.K. So far company has
exported more than US $ 700,000 and is looking
ahead for more opportunities and for the current
year target is USD 1,000,000.
A major investment project was initiated last year,
amounting over Rs. 300 million. Further
investments of over Rs. 1 billion is envisaged to be
made in next three years helping improve quality as
well as production to meet increased demand from
OEM as well as replacement market. This year
production is expected to touch 1.5 million tyres.
The Company is the market leader in Pakistan and
has a current market share of 25%. The tractor tyre
enjoys the highest market share in a market that is
flooded with imported brands.
The brand 'GENERAL' is very well known in the
country and hence a very high awareness.
Our steel belted tubeless radial tyres for cars have
been reinforced with Cap Ply. It is a protective

Taxila is providing design, engineering
and manufacturing services to the projects
of national importance since 1992. It caters to the
national and foreign requirements of thick walled,
high pressure, precise & high-tech components &
equipment.

pressure vessels, heavy steel structure, etc.,in
conformance with the international codes &

HMC-3 is ISO-9001-2000 certified for design &
manufacturing of engineering products for heavy &
medium industries. It is authorized to use U and U2
Stamps of American Society of Mechanical
Engineers.

annealing, inspection and NDT testing facilities.

HMC-3 can cut mild steel plates up to 350 mm
thickness and stainless steel plates up to 75 mm
thickness. Steel plate up to 250 mm thickness can be
rolled in hot form and steel plates up to 350 mm
thickness can be welded by Narrow Gap Welding
The production of equipment belonging to heavy
engineering sector is quite costly in Europe, these
days, due to high man power cost. The Europeans
are getting these jobs manufactured from China,
Malaysia, Korea, etc.

HMC-3 is in a position to supply the engineering
products (components, parts and assemblies) at
competitive prices to European companies.
AES has divided its world business in different

for undertaking designing, drafting and
engineering of the products mentioned above.
It has experienced and seasoned man power for the
purpose. So HMC-3 is interested in working for
design & engineering companies in providing the
technical services in these areas.

It is the one of the first private power project to
achieve commercial operation November 6, 1997,
under the Government energy policy 1994.
AES Lal Pir Ltd.
The Plant located in District Muzaffargarh, has a 362
MW (Gross) capacity. The Plant is based on a
conventional oil fire boiler and a steam turbine
generator.

AES PakGen also started commercial operations on
February 01, 1998, which is second identical thermal
power plant of 365 MW (Gross) capacities in
Muzaffargarh District located adjacent to AES
LalPir plant.

NEPRA
he power sector is the backbone of the
national economy. History of Pakistan and
other countries has shown that national
development may not be possible without ample,
reliable, efficient and affordable electricity.
Pakistan's reform program seeks to increase the
efficiency and reliability of the power sector and to
create a competitive market structure.The
Government has been pursuing a two-pronged
approach consisting of encouraging private sector
investment in new power supply facilities, while
initiating the restructuring and partial privatization
of power utilities. The Strategic Plan of 1992
required the restructuring, reforming and
privatization of WAPDA. This plan was approved
by the Council of Common Interests (CCI) in 1993.
The Consumers, Public Sector Power
Organizations, Private Power Companies and the
Regulatory Agency (NEPRA) constitute the four
pillars of the restructured Power Sector in Pakistan.
The Strategic Plan envisioned NEPRA to be
established in order to (i) Oversee the functioning of
the restructured power sector and (ii) to safeguard
the interest of all affected parties public sector
enterprises such as WAPDA and KESC; Private

Sector Power Companies and the Consumers.
NEPRA was first established in Jan. 1995 through a
Presidential Ordinance, which periodically
extended until an Act was passed by the Parliament
namely Regulation of Generation, Transmission
and Distribution of Electric Power Act 1997 (XL of
1997). The Authority was formally notified on 1301-1998. NEPRA under the said Act has exclusive
power to regulate the provision of electric services
in the country is also independent in the
performance of its functions without any
administrative control from the Government.
However, for the sake of interaction with Federal
and Provincial governments it is placed under the
Cabinet Division.
Functions of the Authority
According to the NEPRA Act, the Authority is
required to perform the following functions:
(1) Grant licences for generation, transmission and
distribution of electric power;
(2) Prescribe procedures and standards for
investment programmes by generation,
transmission and distribution companies;
(3) Prescribe and enforce performance standards
for generation, transmission & distribution
companies;
(4) Establish a uniform system of accounts by
generation, transmission and distribution
companies;
(5) Prescribe fees including fees for grant of licences
and renewal thereof;
(6) Prescribe fines for contravention of the
provisions of this Act; and
(7) Perform any other function which is incidental
or consequential to any of the aforesaid
functions.
(8) Determine tariff, rates, charges and other terms
and conditions for the supply of electric power
services by generation, transmission and
distribution companies and recommend to the
Federal Government for notification;
(9) Review organizational affairs of generation,
transmission and distribution companies to
avoid any adverse effect on the operation of
electric power services and for continuous and
efficient supply of such services;
(10)Encourage uniform industry standards and
code of conduct for generation, transmission
and distribution companies;
(11)Tender advice for Public Sector Projects;
(12)Submit reports to the Federal Government in
respect of activities of generation, transmission
and distribution companies; and
(13)Perform any other function which is incidental
or consequential to any of the aforesaid
functions.

NEPRA submits following reports to the Council of
Common Interests, Government of Pakistan and the
readers at large an overview of the NEPRA
activities and anticipated activities on yearly basis
in accordance with NEPRA Act:

Consumer Interests
In addition to the above, NEPRA is also working
towards safeguarding the interests of the
consumers - For this
purpose following
rules/regulations have been formulated and some
are in progress: Notification of Consumer Eligibility
Criteria Regulations 2003. Performance Standards
Distribution Rules. Final workshop on Consumer
Service Manual held in Jan 2005. Dispute resolution
rules & complaint handling procedure are in final
stages of formulation.
