OEDIPUS THE KING CLASSIC STAGE IRELAND SOPHOCLES TRANSLATED BY PETER D. ARNOTT BY Continuing their exploration of Ancient Greek drama that started earlier this year with The Bacchae, Classic Stage Ireland return with one of the founding myths of Western literature, Sophocles' Oedipus the King: a powerful tale of the quest for truth at any cost... The city of Thebes is stricken by plague, its women are barren and its crops failing. Among the suffering citizens is a man polluted by his past, and only his banishment can return the city to its former glory. As Oedipus, the king of Thebes, embarks on an exhaustive search for the man responsible, he unknowingly begins to expose the truth – a revelation that will change the course of his life forever. CSI favourite Lesa Thurman, whose performance in The Bacchae was “nigh on perfect” (Harvey O'Brien, Irish Theatre Magazine) returns as Oedipus' queen Jocasta; Patrick O'Donnell reprises his role as Teiresias; Michael Bates plays Creon, and Andy Kellegher, praised by critics as Cassius in CSI's Julius Caesar, is the king himself. Oedipus the King dramatises eternal human struggles: between fate and responsibility for our own actions; the ordeal of self-discovery; and our drive to understand our place in the world – no matter what the cost. This powerful work is freshly realised by CSI with all the clarity, imagination and energy characteristic of their highly-acclaimed approach.
