Nominations for Assessment Team membership
Moody Marine is currently undertaking the main assessment of the above fishery against the Marine
Stewardship Council Principles and Criteria for Sustainable Fishing. To assist in this assessment, we are
looking to appoint a team of expert advisors with collective knowledge of the stock evaluation, ecosystem
impacts and management framework applicable to this fishery.
The persons proposed as potential team members of this fishery assessment are set out below in
alphabetical order, together with a brief resume of their background. Potential team members have been
selected on the basis of their experience of fishery management, stock assessment and/or ecosystem
interactions. The final team will comprise three expert advisors from the following list. The Project
Coordinator for Moody Marine will be Paul Knapman.
All stakeholders are now invited to provide any comments on the suitability or otherwise of any of the
nominees. We would, however, ask for any comments by the 11th May 2009 prior to continuing the

Nominees for team membership (in alphabetical order):
John Angel - John worked with the federal Department of Justice before moving to the Canadian
Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) head of legal and regulatory affairs in 1983. His last position
in government (1994) was as Regional Director of Fisheries Management for the Scotia-Fundy Region.
After ten years as Executive Director of the Canadian Association of Prawn Producers, a trade association
representing offshore northern shrimp interests in Eastern Canada. In retirement John continues to work on
a part-time basis through his consultancy business.
Bruce Atkinson – Bruce is a retired fisheries biologist with more than 30 years experience of groundfish
assessment and management. Bruce had an extended career with Canada’s Department of Fisheries and
Ocean (DFO) resulting in a position of Regional Director of Science. Bruce was also DFO Head of
Delegation for Canada to the Scientific Council of the Northwest Atlantic Fisheries Organisation (NAFO)
in the early part of this decade.
Dr Rob Blyth Skyrme - Rob has worked in marine fisheries science, management and policy for more
than 10 years. Prior to becoming a fisheries consultant he was a senior advisor to the UK Government on
environmental and fisheries issues and the Deputy Chief Officer for the largest inshore fisheries
management organisation in England. Rob is now based in Hawaii.
Mike Pawson - Until his retirement, Mike Pawson worked as senior fisheries advisor at the Centre for
Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS) in the UK. During a career lasting almost four
decades he carried out biological research and providing fisheries scientific and management advice to the
UK government, the European Commission and other national and international organizations.
Max Stocker – Max is a fisheries scientist with 29 years of extensive experience. From 1978-2006 Dr.
Stocker held the position of research scientist with DFO at the Pacific Biological Station. He has authored
and co-authored over 90 scientific papers and reports, and made over 50 presentations in national and
international scientific meetings. Max chaired the Pacific Scientific Advice Review Committee (PSARC)
for many years and edited and published over 30 advisory documents on the stock status of marine species
and the implications of harvest management on these stocks.
