Surface Planer Study Guide

1.

The margin of safety for the surface planer is 4”.

2.

We use the surface planer to plane end grain, edge grain and surface grain.

3.

The arrow of the grain should be pointing into the cutter head for the cleanest cut.

If your board gets stuck immediately shut off the machine.

5.

Block the chip-breaker open when cutting wide material.

6.

Make certain the table depth hand wheel is locked into place before starting.

7.

Our cutterhead knives will cut through nails, and screws without being damaged.

8.

Keep both your hands on top of the wood when stating.

9.

Use push sticks when surfacing.

10.

Never cut less than 1/16” of material at a time.

11.

Plywood may be run through the surfacer.

12.

If a board gets stuck give it a big extra push to get it started again.

13.

Always turn the convex side of the warp toward the table.

14.

Make every adjustment with the power off.

15.

Plane everything by yourself.

16.

Stand to the side of the machine not in line with the tables.

17.

Do not reach over the cutterhead.

18.

Never run any material shorter than 24” through our surfacer.

19.

Raise the bed rollers to eliminate snipe.

20.

Stock may be safely planed less than ¼ ” thick.

21.

Wear safety glasses whenever you are near the machine and it is running.

22.

If your board gets stuck, immediately lower the table.

23.

The bed rollers are adjusted by using the hand wheel on the side of the machine.

24.

Maple, cherry and birch may be cut across the grain since they are short fibered woods.

25.

If your board gets stuck raise the table to get the board started then quickly lower it.
