By Invitation of Pro Birchard visited the Ship Cannal at Seedly near
Manchester and had the pleasure of looking at the large steamers then in the doc
being unloaded
Also saw the great cannal lock work letting the ship in and out
It was a wonderful sight to see such large ships handled like toys and to see
them unload by the use of large dericks is wonderful We also saw them loading a
ship with coal They pick up a whole car of coal at a time and drop the coal in
to the hold of the ship without shoveling. The ships are brought in land 38
miles from the sea and are wonderfully handled.
We then saw the largest grain elevator in the world built by an american
company which would service shiploads of grain which is worked entirely by
machinery, no shovels being used in loading or unloading. From there we
accompanied brother Birchall to his home where his wife had a nice dinner ready.
We stayed also to tea at 6 pm and went through the Seedly Park which is well
kept and very nice .
