JABEZ WILLIAM WEST'S MISSIONARY JOURNAL VOLUME 2 Friday April 22nd/1898 Weather fine. This morning was spent in giving out conference notices, had several say they would come to meeting, gave out douring the day 300. Evening while waiting for the Landladie to open the door of our dwelling as she had gone out met Mr.Levy Rogers and envited him in and talked on the Gospel for 3 hours he seemed to think we had the Truth and envited me to meet him again and talk on the Gospel Saturday 23rd/1898 fine did not go out this fornoon only to get my shoe mended while out met a Mr. Levy Rogers and after talking for awhile he invited me to see his wife and then spent a pleasant hour on the Gospel with an envitation to call on Wednesday and talk farther on the principals of life and salvation after noon distributed tracts ect. in company with Bro. Rushton & Bowers. Evening help to hold outdoor meetting there was quite an number of visiting Elders present also 4 Ladies, two as missionary we held 5 meetting on the street all well attended sometimes as high as 500 people present to listen to the Gospel at the meeting held on the torneyfield the Christiandelphous delivered the Jamison & Novt Lititure of a very bad cochester and try to brak up our meetting went to the train and met Bro. Stringham. Also bought 5 sholders (25 lbs) of mutton @ 7c per lbs Sunday April 24/1898 Meetting commenced at 10:30 fair attendance at the Unity Hall afternoon every seat was taken and a good spirit prevailed at the close of the meetting the Christiandelphous gave out a lots of there Lititure again and tryed to get people not to come to our meetting But the evening meeting was well attended nearly 800 people present to hear the Gospel discussing the day in company with Bro. Stringham and Kirkham we went and administered James Kershaw a man not of our church but who had faith in the administration of the Elders I told him if he could exercise faith he should recover by the power of the Lord as he had pneumonia and bronchitis and one doctor gave him up to die as he was very bad and spitting blood we prayed for him and asked the Lord to restore him to health we also administered to Bro. Miller of Manchester the Conference passed of well and the visiting Brethring were well pleased with our success all passed of well and we all enjoyed our conference with 42 baptisms for the 5 months ending April 24. Monday, April 25/1898 as we were to have a sociable and dinner for the visiting Elders & strangers we were kept busy the priesthood meetting was held at 10:30 and we had some very good advice given to us by the Brethern and all felt well at the close of the meeting as we had the Ladie Missionarys present and they being the first to be called on a mission we all went to the park and had our photoes taken some 38 in number The names of the Ladie Missionarys was Miss Inez Knight and Miss Lucy Jane Brimhall Visiters was Mrs. Sarah E. Noal Miss Caroline Smith. coming back from the park where we had our photos taken we marched through the street two abreast to the Union Street hall and caused a great deal of curiosity we then partook of the Bounties of Life prepared by the Ladies of Oldham and then after dinner we spent an enjoyable time singing and reciting also had a lecture on the Life of Joseph Smith all left feeling better for being togeather and to know the Conference was a success gave us pleasure Tuesday, April 26/1898 Rain this morning saw Bro Jed to the train after spending a nice time together as we were pleased to see one another also went to see Mrs. Ada Lee Daughter of James Evins as she had sent me word she wanted to see me in regard to her Mother also went to seek new lodging on Lee Street called on Bro. Colllins and had tea with them Evening went to Sister Buckleys as they had been listening to some terrible yarns and had staid away from meetting left them feeling Better and are going to attend to his duties Wednesday 27 April Rainy Went to see Mr Lershaw who is sick staid the fornoon with him afternoon went to see Mr. Mills and Bro Littins had tea with them also Saw Proof of Photo Evening as we had been envited to go to Mr. Coy Rogers got home early but as he was going out postponed our visit until the following week the day was very wet Thursday 28/1898 Being rainy staid home and wrote in the fornoon. Evening went to town to hold meetting but so rainy Austin & Robinson came over spent the evening with us Friday 29/1898 After writing home went to Mr and engaged lodging and will move a week Saturday from there in company with Bro Austin went to fittens to notify her (Sister Scofries) of her pass to Utah. the Poor old Ladie was fairly over come as she has been next door to starving for some time her and her son living and paying rent on 3oo per Week Evening came up town to hold meetting outdoor after we got started it rained so as we had to give over and I got nearly wet through before we got home the Rain was so heavy Saturday, April 30 Stormy went this forenoon to see Mr. Kershaw found him still emproving Spent two hours talking to him on the Gosple after noon went to Sister Johnsons had tea with them as it was Raining did not hold our door meettings Sunday, May 1st 1898 Fine was called to go to Heywood and preach to train at 10:30 Kings St. arrived at Heywood at 12 Noon spent a short time at Bro Laws afternoon meetting was fairly well attended the Saints bore their testimonys then I occupied the time giving the Saints enstruction on the Gospel encouraged them to attend to their duties Staid to tea with Sister Langford Evening meeting well attend some strangers present Bro Hurst and I ocupied the Time a good spirit prevailed and at the close of the meetting had a conversation with the strangers on the Gosple got home at 10:26. Monday, May 2nd cold and windy went to see Mr. Kershaw he is still emproving spent two hours with him after diner went to Sister Johnson Seas spent afternoon & evening their son Jas. is goying to Utah Gave him Some timely advice had tea and was treated very kindly Tuesday, May 3rd/1898 fine went this forenoon to Bro Collins had dinner spent nice time helped to get two sack of flour in they weigh 280# each. I carried one weigh 280# Evening went to Mr. & Mrs. Mitchels spent the evening untill 12 o clock we had tea at 6 p.m. and supper at 12 and spent a very pleasant time dining speaking and all left feelling we had a good time Wednesday, May 4 fine Spent this fornoon in reading afternoon went to Sister Walkers and spent the time with Bro Broadbent as he was goying to leave for home a great many of the Saints gathered to bid him goodby we spent a nice time in fairwell speaches and gave him a good cheer for Home. Thursday, May 5 Very Rainey went by Invitation to Mrs. Langdon to tea evening went to Sister Fitter to cottage Meetting which was well attended and a good spirit prevailed, got home at 10:30. Friday, May 6th/1898 (Fair) spent this fore noon in writting, also folded tracts Evening held an out door meetting near Musups good attendance gave out 225 Tracts Saturday, May 7th/1898 Rain went to see about new lodgings as we had arranged to go but the Ladie Husband Mr. Carver had taken worse as he was an invalid of consumption so we thought is not wize to moove untill he got Better or worse Evening went to Tammy fields to hold meetting it came on to rain so did not hold meetting went to see Bro. Blake and fam on Rock Street near market. Sunday, May 8/1898 wet Sunday School fair attendance, afternoon meetting fairly attended Evening, house well filled by Strangers and Saints a good spirit prevailed had two conversations on the Gosple. as one of the Sisters was aflicted we fasted from Saturday untill Sunday Eve 5:30 and then administered to her and prayed that she might recover. She is a good girl and it will be a blessing to her as she has to work at the Mills for a living (Received sad news of Baby sickness and am in hope the next letter will be Better feel to put our trust in the Lord.) Monday, May 9/1898 this fornoon cold and stormy a little clearer at noon Bro Austin, Collins and myself went and had our photo taken as Elder Austin was goying away Evening went to Tammy Fields to hold meeting but owing to the boys not being present did not hold any meeting Tuesday, May 10/1898 Very stormy went to see Mr. Craven hoo is very sick had a chat on the Gospel with him and Bro. Clark and I gave him 5 shilling to help him out as things are very poor one day his wife out and worked all day without meat or food untill she got her pay spent the Evening at Mrs. appleyard by Invitation as Bro Austin was goying next day got home at 11:30 Wednesday, May 11/1898 went this forenoon to See Austin off after noon visited the Saints Fittens & Mrs. Johnson also went to mutual had a fair attendance Bro Robinson lectured on the Book of Mormon received letter from home children better Thursday, May12 Cold & stormy This forenoon went tracting had several conversations and gave out 120 tracts afternoon staid home and read Evening held outdoor meettings as the weather was cold did not have very good attendance Friday May 13th Rainy spent this fornoon writing afternoon went to Sister Walkers to see about lodging as the President has apointed me to Labor with Bro Kirkman and Empey - to move on the 18 or 20 Evening went to the Tommy fields to hold an out door meeting so we go together it started raining so had to give it up got home at 10:30 quite wet Saturday May 14 Fine Was requisted to go to heywood and Baptize some that had aplied got there at 4:30 pm had tea with Bro Law and spent a pleasant evening until 8:30 when we went to the Baths and Baptized 3 persons got home to the house at 9:30 while at the Baths I did not have an extra pair of Garments and none on kept on the same which got quite wet to the waist and had to keep in the same as I was 18 miles from home felt quite chilly got into bed and raped the clothes tight around me and was soon asleep Sunday May 15 Fine staid at Bro Laws at night got up feelling all right none the worse for the wetting fornoon went around the town aftayrow afternoon held meetting at Bro Laws house and ordained the three members of the church held meetting again in the evening fair attendance and quite a number of strangers present it si quite a task to talk in the ofternoon and evening to the same congrgation there was to be some of the other Brothers present but they failed to came so I was left alone got home at 10:30 cost 7 S Monday May 16/1898 Fair went this fornoon to visit the sick found the Bro quite bad wash day did not go tracting Evening held outdoor meetting I talked for 20 minutes it is Very hard work Bro Davis ocupied 1/2 hour we had between two and three hundred listen to us got home at 9:30 Tuesday May 17th/1898 Rain This morning very wet went up town and Bought Lillie a handkerchief Jabez a pocket knife Walter a Tie Dot and Myrtel an apron Baby some candy Jessie 3 Jars fruit and sent by Bro Davis house also large photo Evening called on Mrs. Booth and was well received from there went to Mrs. Kershaw found Mrs Kershaw some better Wednesday May 18/1898 Fine went tracting gave out 60 tracts and had 7 conversations on the Gospel one ladie had read the tract and enquired for the Book of Mormon feel some what encouraged after todays work went to hold meetting uptown but the police forbade us so did not hold any meetting Thursday May 19th Fair, windy Fornoon prepared tracts and went to Sylvan street after noon went tracting gave out 140 tracts had two conversations Evening held cottage meetting at Sylvan Street Got home at 10:30 Friday May 20 Spent the fornoon writting home Bro Kirkman came up and had dinner with us as it was stormy cannot hold out door meetting Saturday May 21st Fornoon packed my trunk ready to move to 24 Sylvan Street had dinner then Moved to my new quarters Evening held outDoor meetting fair attendance and very good attention was paid no disturbance was paid to us Sunday May 22nd/1898 Fine Went to Sunday School at 10:30 in Oldham good attendance received Lightegraph views of the Bibil and book of mormon. I presided all day. Bro Bradshaw talk to us for the last time in Oldham as he goes home on June the 2nd evening it May 22nd 40 Years today Storming very hard first rain or Thunder storm I have seen on this side of the ocean after knitting went to administer to Mrs Hardman Daughter of Mrs Johnson Monday May 23rd/1898 Fair This fornoon prepare tracts after dinner went tracting gave out 100 first tracts in a new district Evening held an out door meetting we waited for the Salvation army to get throug there was also another around ready to talk or hold meetting we both stood in and they proved too much fo rus as the people will have anything but the Gospel we had 30-100 while the other man had two or three hundred Tuesday May 24/1898 This morning went to had abath also met Jabez Taylor Mace of SLC had a long conversation and she invited me to call on her afternoon went tracting had several conversations, one with 3 salvation Army women also went to take a Book of Mormon as a Ladie wanted to read one and am taking it to her said that her husband forbade her reading it and said he would burn the house if she brought it in the House evening called on Miss Bradley also held in company with the Boys a meetting outdoors I spoke for 20 minutes it was very cold and had to quit. Got home at 9:30 had a very nice day Wednesday May 25 fair went to Manchester walking there and back stoped and had dinner with Bro William got back to Bro Albertson for Tea got home at 5:30 evening still to tired to go out 20 stairs to singing practice as we have singing practice every Wednesday Thursday May 26 Fair Sister Scofield gave me to care for her 610 S she wants me to send to the office for her Went to Mrs. fitten and left Bed Spreads Sister Scofield told take to Utah Evening held a metting at Sister Walker good attendance I spoke first and Mrs. Kirkman last Friday May 27/1898 fair This morning went to Sister Bradleys and got my mail also fixed her lounge also calling on Mrs. pratt for tracts thought they were very good but not necesary to salvation after Dinner wrote home also to Geo C. Smith he wrote me to borow 2S but I had none to lend evening went to Tamingfield to hold meetting as there was two other parties on the ground had to give it up got home at 9:30 supper and went to bed at 11:30 Saturday May 28 Spent befor noon writting & reading ect Evening held out Door meetting as there was several meetting being held did not have as good attendance after meetting the Christiphedup speaker acted very ugley and tryed to get us into argument as I got angry thought best to leave him alone Sunday May 29 Went to Blackburn to the Liverpool Conference Saw Bro Jon also quite a number of the Bro. Bro Lund of the apostats was there and we had a good advice given to us by him & the Brothern after meetting with them the four spent the night at the Temperance Hotell super bed & breakfast cost 2 6 Monday 30th/1898 Went to Covington and sttended the Priesthood meetting had good advice given me. Left for Manchester at 5:30 got there at 8:30 called to see Bro Bradshaw but he had not returned from Blackpool got back to Oldham at 9:30 Tuesday 31/1898 Very Stormy Spent the entire day in visiting the saints as they are having a good deal of persecution and some are getting weak in the faith and it keeps us busy to keep them waslking in the narrow way. Sister Berry hoo has been always doughtfull as regard to the profet, Joseph being a profet of the Lord Stormy went went to see Mr the informary, ther things to Wednesday June 1st to Sister Schofield to help her off asshe sails tomorrow also Kershaw hoo is sick but got to late as he they had sent him to as he was very bad also went to Bro Fittins and helped pack the Warwith station also bid them goodby at 9:30 Thursday June 2nd/1898 Stormy Bro Kirkman and I walked to council meeting at Manchester got there at 11 am walked 7 miles in one hour and ahalf had some good instruction from our President Bro Blake after meetting went to Mr. John Clark sister was very well received and invited back again she gave us a good tea Bro Brigs and I were together spent a nice afternoon until 9:30 then took train for Oldham Friday June 3/1898 the Oldham Sunday School Members went to Greefield Bro Barnes, Brigs and myself accompaning them arriving at Greenfield Station we walk around the Drive to Belles Jacks, a distanceof 11 miles and from there around the Sadelworth hills to Cemetery and from there to Station in Greenfield. we had a very nice walk a Gentle Rain fell causing us to use our umbrellas there 26 in the party above 14 years old--got hom at 6:30 quite tired Saturday June 4/1898 Rain wrote home evening went to post letter got to late for mail from P.O. went to Mrs. Bradleys then met Mrs. Berry has had considered to have the church had a 3 1/2 hour conversation with her and left her feeling better in regard to the Gospel and she asked us to pray for her and hoped she would see different Sunday June 5/1898 Fair Bro Kirkham having gone to Machelfield I took charge had very nice Sunday School also appointed Bro Farr to Preside at the meetting Being fast day we fasted until 6pm was then invited to Bro Collins for tea the meetings of the day were awell attended and a good spirit prevailed the Saints are feeling all right--except Sister Berry and Sis Buckely as far as we can lear Monday June 6th/1898 Stormy Staid home and studied and wrote in my Journal evening we sent for only Bro Fitten to see the ondition at Sister Schofield had left them in rather un christian way as they had left several little debts unpaid and some of feelling also a coat that was to be left she took with her after agreeing to leave it--to off set her indebtedness after I talked with them they felt better toward her I said they would not speak of it again Tuesday June 7 Morning went and had a bath and changed clothes afternoon went visiting some of those Saints that were not attending these meeting had a long talk with Bro & Sister Buckely on obedience to the Gospel and advised them to come to meeting also had a conversation with Mrs. apple yarn in regard to the Plan of Salvation got home at 11:30 pm Wednesday June 8/1898 Fair This forenoon folded tracts Ect Bro Kirkman got back from Mackelsfield folded tracts ect. evening went to Mups Bridgs and held an out-door meetting also went to the park to hold meeting there got hom at 10:30 being a few present -- gave it up Thursday June 9/1898 went tracting for the afternoon had a conversation or two and called to Sister Bradley had tea from there went to Mrs. Johansen on North #8 Street help hold a cottage metting good attendance all felt well got home at 10:30 Friday June 10th/1898 Fair fornoon wrote home also to Rool C. evening went to procure Baths for Baptizems also help hold an out door meetting got home at 11 pm/1898 Saturday June 11/1898 Fine This for noon finished writting afternoon went and posted letter also had a chat with Barker Evening held an out door meetting Just befor meetting a man tried to disturb the peace and got badly cut up and was finly taken to the Jail Meeting adjourned with further interruption Sunday June 12th/1898 This morning went to Sunday School at Oldhaml being apointed to go to Manchester to help hold metting I arrived at Manchester at 3 pm. There not being many there we turned our meeting into a Bible class-Evening went to tea with Bro Miller from there went to see Ben Brileys insunnent in Queen Park from there two meeting - there quite a few present some of th4 Saints bore their testimony then I occupied the balance of the time got home at 9:30 Road back from mites Platting Station Monday June 13th/1898 Fine as Mrs Kershaw son died (James I Kershaw) we were asked to preside at the funeral After prayer Bro James Blake talked for a short time and Bro Kirkman called on me. Thursday June 16/98 Cloudy Bro Far staid with us all night after Diner went tracting had several conversations on the Gospel Evening Bros Black, Rob Butterworth & I held an outdoor meetting on the Spais Gracing by Meeks RR Bridge Bro Kirkman and I visited Ada Lee found her just getting over a spree Talked to her on the necessity of temp and advised her to abstain from such habits Gave out 50 tracts at the close of outdoor meeting Friday June 17/ 1898 Fine This fornoon I went to Sister Berrys and left her Orson Prats work on authority on the mission of Joseph Smith had a two hour conversation and I believe she will yet come back to the church went to Tammy field and help hold out door meetting home at 10:30 we had a fair attendance and good order got Saturday June 18/98 Rained This fornoon was very stormy so did not out only to post letter After dinner went to see for Brepos Posesian (?) at Oldham it was very nice but as it rained in torentents we did enjoy it very much afternoon went to see Mrs. Morn's otr sis 238 Bell grave Road of Ashton Rd they treated Bro Kirkham very well and invited us to come and see them again they are relation of Jabez Taylor of SLCity Sunday June 19/1898 Fine Being called to go over to Potscroft and Mossite, left Oldham at 10:20 a.m. Road to Miles Platting Met Bro Simsping then walked to Patsocroft Held meetting had dinner with Bro Roberson there met the Prefcio Starrup Girls evening walked to Grosside a distance of two miles Held meetting had a very nice time in talking on the Gosple then walked another mile to train then road to Manchester then took train to Oldham Got there at 10:30 Monday June 20/1898 Stormy went to Mrs. Collins as we had not been to see them for some time they were pleased to see us talking to them on the Gosple got home at 11 p.m Tuesday June 21/1898 Today was very stormy Staid home and spent the time in Reading ect. Evening went to Middelton Jct and held cottage meetting at Bro Stout had a nice time a good spirit prevailed and all was well got home at 10:30 after walking 3 1/2 miles in a heavy rain storm Wednesday June 22/1898 Fair Went tracting had two conversations distributed 60 tracts at houses Evening held outdoor meeting I occupied the most of time Had a good crowd and gave out 50 tracts got home at 10 p.m. Thursday June 23 Fair This morning was fine but as the day wore on it began to rain being previously invited to Mrs. Morn's on 38 Belgam Road spent the day or afternoon with Mr. Morn and wife and then another Mrs. Taylor. They received us very kindly and made our stay plesant. We talked to them on the Gosple Plan of Salvation and left them tracts and books to read and was invited back again Walked from there to Sister Hadfield a distance of 2 ./. mile got there at 9 pm and helped with the meeting of the Saints who bore their testimony of their knoledge of the Gosple and the benefits of the Gospel to them Friday June 24 Stormy Very stormy to day staid home and wrote and read evening was invited to go through one of Oldham Large corn mill by Mr Parson cousin of James Blake The mill has a capability of 500 sack flour of 280# each every 24 hours besides having a separator roler for chopping corn and barley the flour is all batted through silk seives and is thoroughly up to date in all particulars. Mr. Parson is a very able man in his line and saw all he could to intrust us in the procses of milling Saturday June 25 Still Rainy This morning looking over my wardrobe after noon by the invitation of Bro Fittern got to go through the Oldham Poor house at the entrance met Mr. Robinson the Gov in charge being introduced to him as American Gentlemen he sent a special Gent to show us through the place The first place or rooms went was the childrens ward where they take care of all babys that are sick up to three years old with all kind of diseases except that which is catching Next visited the ladies ward and was well received by the attendant and shown through In this ward we were aked to sing and did so sang O my Father and Great Geohova the patients were much appreciative and gave way to to bows and asked us to sing more After visiting the men's ward went to the embicil ward and saw some funny sights and people The caretakers treated us very kind we left a number of tracts, a few words of the Gosple Evening went to the Tammy field and held meetting also opted to talk in front of the twon hall but got refused by the Sergent of Police so went home got there at 10:30 quite tired and having walked 8 miles Sunday June 26 Stormy Fair for a while had a good attendance at the school Had three classes bible testament and gospel Principles as I expect to go away soon, bore my testimony to the people It was very stormy there were not many there to meeting Went to Bro Collins for Dinner and tea. Had super at Bro Blackford Monday June 27/1898 Fine Went tracting had bessie? come Went and got my umbrella fixed access rob cost 5 ? From there went to the Tommy field in company with the Brethern there were 300 present or more After Bro Kirkham got through talking Ros the christal tried to upset our meetting but we appealed to the crowd and they cried him down Bro Robinson talked then I talked We sant the Doxology closed by Prayer having a good time Tuesday June 28th/1898 Fine After breakfast went to Bro Clark, Sister Bradley and Bro Henry and from there to Greenfield to Bro & Sister Shaw. Got there at 3 pm found them all well and they received us very kindly After spending a pleasant evening and a nice tea walked back home By then received a nice present from Annie Shaw in the way of a Bay her own wash I gave her two shillings (48c) left there feeling well in the way of the durple. Wednesday Fine Bro Jas Blake came over from Manchester to see about getting hall I went to the Lees to see about sterioptican and operator Also went to about hall can get hall at S2 and steroptican and operitor S1- for our evening went to quire practice Thursday June Spent the fornoon writing home ect. put new button an my coat and other ect afternoon went to Sister Hadfield in company with Bro Butterworth tea and a good chat evening held meetting at Sister Walkers to change talked them for half hour had a Pleasant afternoon and evening Jun 29 He and see night 30/1898 repairs had and Friday July 1st/1898 Fine Visited Mrs. Heaton had a conversation with her Husband Evening held meetting at Tammy field the rain was falling quite fast but we did not feel dismayed if the people could stand it we could Our Hymn Book got quite wet while singing Bro Kirkham prayed and I talked, the rain falling on my balded head and running down my neck. Rushton and I walked to the Victoria Station took train to Tylsdly there met Bro & Sister Williams held three services during the day had a fair time good attentance Read a letter from Bro. Jos Davis to Sister Williams got back to Oldham at 9:30 pm Monday July 4 Fine Went to Belvies Gardens being the 4 of July. Took advantage of the Day to celebrate Also received the news of the distruction of Genevia Gleet in Cubia Spent in our day five 36 & did not get very extravagent Tuesday July 5th/1898 Fine Bro Knockham and I went to Shaw and Shelves and Dog Hill to Bro Wizeman Smith and Atherton Came back to hold outdoor meetting as the Boys were to meet but they failed to come Got home at 9:30 went to see Mrs. Ado Lees head Wednesday July 6 Fine Went to Sister Hadfield to dinner Afternoon bro Blake and I went to see about bills posting and advertizing for Bro Talmage lecture engaged Hall and got bills posted, ect. for the lecture Thursday July 7 Wet This being counsel Day wnet to Manchester Road there walked back Had some good advice and councle at the meetting by the President and Brethren present Evening held meetting a Sister Curneys We had a good meeting house well filled Oeveriar bore their testimony and I with the Elders spoke on the Gosple Friday July 8/1898 Fine Bro Blake came over and said that we could not get the lectures here on time for the 13 of July so had to do or undo what we had done in regard to the lectures after spending 5 L had to do the work all over again evening held a meetting out door also wrote home went to bed at 11:30 Saturday July 9 Fine After breakfast Bro Barnes and my ? snow to the county hall to postpone date of Lecture also to Bill Posting Co to change pasters Evening held meeting out doors on Tammy field Bro Barnes and I being alone we had a fair attendance good order we both addressed the congregation and good spirit prevailed Got home at 10:30 Sunday July 10/1898 Fine This morning went to Sunday School there 25 schollars present and we had a good time After school we had a short practice of our Hymns Afternoon we Bro Borus held Sacrament Meetting fair attendance Evening meetting was well attended by strangers and Saints Bro Barnes ocupied most of the time a good spirit prevailed and all felt well at the close of the meetting We had a discussion with a local Preacher on Baptisn Also Miss Alace Hyde asked to be baptized and wnated me to perform the ordinance for her for which, as I had many conversations with her and was glad to see her come forward and ask for Baptism, which should take place next Wednesday Evening Monday July 11/1898 Fine By Invitation of Pro Birchard visited the Ship Cannal at Seedly near Manchester and had the pleasure of looking at the large steamers then in the doc being unloaded Also saw the great cannal lock work letting the ship in and out It was a wonderful sight to see such large ships handled like toys and to see them unload by the use of large dericks is wonderful We also saw them loading a ship with coal They pick up a whole car of coal at a time and drop the coal in to the hold of the ship without shoveling. The ships are brought in land 38 miles from the sea and are wonderfully handled. We then saw the largest grain elevator in the world built by an american company which would service shiploads of grain which is worked entirely by machinery, no shovels being used in loading or unloading. From there we accompanied brother Birchall to his home where his wife had a nice dinner ready. We stayed also to tea at 6 pm and went through the Seedly Park which is well kept and very nice . From there went back to Oldham where we arrived at 11 pm and still daylight The ship cannal is two miles from Manchester and 9 miles from Oldham There was present Bro Barnes, Dawson, Kirkham and myself Tuesday July 12 1898 Cloudy Received two letters from home, one from father and the other from Lillie and Jabis containing the death of Bro Thomas which is sad news to me also the sickness of my dear children with measles They think the children are over the worst of their trouble. Bro Bowers and I by Invitation went to see Mrs. Lees on Nobery Street No. 22 off Gladwick St. Had a two 1/2 hours conversation on the Gosple and they confirmed that they believed we were right as to Baptizm they also felt glad that we called and explained the Gosple to them and wanted that we should not forget them but come whenever we felt like it. Wednesday July 13/1898 Fine Wrote home to Father and Magie in the morning Afternoon Bro Collins took me for a drive in the country through Middelton and Berry also Manchester We stoped twice on a Journey of 15 miles to let the horse bail--the poney was a very good one had a gate of three minutes We passed through some very fine mountain scenery as they call it. here the mountains are high rowling hills of grass land more like well cared for lawns than farms The roads are all paved and burbed and the streets as far as you can see. Well I apreached the ride and feel to tahnk the Bro Colins for the out Evening I had the pleasureof baptizing Dister Alace Ann Hyde of Middle Junction, a ladie that I have had a great many conversations with on the Godpel and finally asked to baptized her which I did. Bro Clark was mouth in the confirmation which was attended to at Sister Johnsons We paid the Bath house caretaker 2 S for his kindness Got home at 10 pm. Thursday July 14/1898 Fine Bro. Kirkham and I went to see Sister Berry and had a conversation with her She is gradually getting farther in the dark for which we felt sorry From there went to Mrs. Appleyard had a conversation From there went to Bro. Collins and spent the evening also met two strangers and had a good Gosple conversation with them. Bro Collins and family was very kind and made our stay pleasant Got home at 11:30 pm. Friday July 15/1898 Fine While writing home a Catholic by the name Frank Dobbs called at Sister Walkers enquiring as to our teaching on Mormonism and after we explained our teaching to him & answered his questions he seemed pleased and asked for our Litature and we furnished him tracts and one Voice of Warning, ect. After noon went to sister Stouts and spent a few hours From there went to Sister Hydes and spent the evening. Bro. Kirkham and I spent three hours sermonizing on the Gosple with those that had not received or been baptized. They gave us a nice super and was very intrusted in what we said. I believe that the eldest daughter will yet join the Church. They are a very nice family and are very much entrested in the salvation of their souls. Saturday July 16 Fine This fornoon went to see about trip to London regular fare 15 S5 1/2 p No excursion Also went to Bro. Martins to help him with his trunk in the way of Sign writting From there went to Sister Hadfield spent a few hours from there to Sister Fetters by Invitation to tea Spent the afternoon until 6:30 pm From there went to Sister Walker met Bro. Jed Then we went to the Taming Field outdoor meeting Jed spoke on the subject truth. After meeting went to meet Bro. McMurian at L & G Shine Station Went Mr. Birchall Sims to get place for Bro James and McMurrie to stay Jed staid with us at 24 Sylvan Street Saturday July 17th Sunday Morning all went to Sunday School, there had a good time. There were 37scholers and teachers present. Bro McMuran stated that the Oldham school was the nearest like a S School he had seen since he left home Sunday July 17/1898 Our meetting all day were well attended a good spirit prevailed. I was called on to talk in the evening after Bro. McMurrie. Bro Stringham and I was invited to Mr. Birchall to tea the folks seemed to feel bad at me leaving Oldham. Monday July 18/1898 Fine Bro.Stringham and I went visiting the Saints among them was Mrs. Appleyard No. 189 Grace Satry St. Miss Pearson and her sister and Mrs. Parsons her friend From there visited the Policeman at Allenandson Park and his wife, one of the first ladies to listen at our ourdoor meettomg bu the park. She was pleased to see me. From there got our ticcent for the midnight train for London leaving Oldham at 11:15 pm Evening went to Tamy field and gave them my last ourdoor sermon or speech From there went to Sister Walkers and staid until train time singing songs ect. Got up and went to station at 9 cost of 2 S Left Oldham at 11:16 pm arrived in London at 6 am going over the Midland Route Tuesday July 19th/1898 Rainy After a teadious ride of 240 miles. took cab at a cost of 1.8 arrived at the conference house 36 Fenton St. had a wash got breakfast and then went in the office met Mrs. Morris of the 8th Ward who is here on a visit--had a talk with her about--we then went to the zoo gardens also went to Madam Cassads Wax works Got back to the Hall at 10:30 pm Wednesday July 20/1898 Fine Bro. Stringham and I went to Uncle Williams for Dinner spent a pleasant time with them until 3 o'clock. We then went to the London tour and bargained over terms Got back to office at 8:30 p.m. Evening visited the Eurpean Theater. Thursday July 21 Fine After breakfast went to Uncle Williams Had dinner with them They were pleased to see s Jed and I then went to St. Paul Catheadrial, spent a nice time Got back to office at 10:30 pm Friday 22nd We spent day and Saturday 23rd in seeing Landry Sunday 24/1898 Went on a preaching tour to Stratford--got lost trying to find station went 6 miles out of the way finaly got back to Landary after holding two meettings one in doors and one out. Met Bro Wright of Ogden and Joe Midelton of Cedar City, Utah. They are nice men Forgot today what a time I had at the wedding. I was one of the cheaf men lead the groom mother to the dinner and listened to the marriage service. After the wedding went to the Brides Father's House to Breakfast at 6 pm. They sat me next to Uncle at the head of the table. They had a very nice table of food and lots of style 39 sat down to eat. After eating I felt quite sick and tried to get over it but no go and while they were toasting the bride I fainted dead away. I wa so hot I could not get to the door. I thought I had been poisoned or some thing else. I finally got outside and over in the garden vomited everything off of my stomach and then felt better. The party kept up all night and I finaly got all right but sorry to mar the party by sutch a trick Had a long conversation with Mr. Burton about the Mormons ect. and he invited me to come again to see him. I thus passed the day of my first wedding in England the bride was dressed very nice and looked well. Monday 25th & Tuesday 26th Monday and Tuesday went with Jed and Bro Pulsiver looking up the sights Ect in London. Wednesday 27th fornoon went and gave out Lecture notices Evening acted as door keeper took the tickments and sold some Hall was well filled and the Lecture was well given and made a good empression Thursday 28th Went with Bro Polsen to see his cousin also went to the surgical institute of Science saw its human body all cut up in pieces ect. and preserved in alcohol quite a sight for a weak stomach. Evening went to Parris at night took Cook & Sons three days excursion in France and Marselles and all the sights and it is a sight no other city I have seen could be compared to it was gone five days and spent 28.00 dollars it is the city of the world to much to write it all down. The weather and climate is a good deal like Utah street hosts and on the square. Got home from France Tuesday morning Aug 2nd 1898 Tuesday Aug 2, 1898 Fine This morning saw Jed off for Liverpool then went and had a bath also met sister Shrining of 19th Ward who told of the loss of Bro Papworth Barn at his house London as near Pentson street is a filthey Place drunk woman by the searl the Elders and Saints all went to Epping Forest containing 30 acres. Bro Hibberd and I staid home Evening Bro McMuries Telegraphed for Prest Clark to meet him at Eustas Station He not being in Inest to meet him I also went with him to the Liverpool Station as he was on his road to the continent I got back to the office at 36 at 9.30. Wednesday Aug 3/1898 Fine Was the first time or experience I had in cooking Got Breakfast and dinner also supper Evening went on the street in company with Bro Polsser Baker and Hamblin It came on to rain for so did not keep our meeting very long. I talk first, then Bro Hawkins talked until the rain stoped him Got back to the office at 9:30. Thursday Aug 4 1898 Fine Afternoon after dinner was over went and bought some cuffs @ 9 p From there went to assist Wm. and a long gosple chat with her also her nephew Smith, a young man from there went to meetting at No. 36 Pentas Street after meetting Miss Young and Baker sang for us met quite a number of Saints Got to bed at 12:30 a.m. Friday Aug 5th 1898 Fine & stormy Got Breakfast, mush and fruit eggs Dinner had stewed fruit, rice pudding, cold corned beef ect. We take turns in cooking this evening being cold and stormy did not go out on the street to preach. Saturday Aug 6th/1898 Fine Staid in and got Breakfast and dinner afternoon in company with Bro A. Hamblin went to Wside Bent there met Uncle, aunt and their sons and two daughters after their usual greeting got talking on the Gosple the young man and oldest daughter are members of the church of England and continued that they were right we conversed untill 10 p.m. and felt that we left a good empression with them as to the truth of the Gosple Got back to 36 at 11pm Sunday Aug 7th/1898 Stormy This fast day no cooking to do this fornoon was Priesthood meetting Afternoon Testimony. Evening I was called on to preach spoke on the first principals of the gospel for half an hour then Bro Clark followed on the necessity of the Holy Ghost and the Gift of God to them that keep his commandments After meeting had a conversation with Bro Thomas Bro a colonel in the English army All so met quite a number of the Saints the Evening meeting was well attended in the evening and all seemed to enjoy the preaching. Monday Aug 8/1898 Fine Bro Hibbards turn to cook this week this morning went to Kings Cross to see Bro Hibbard on the right bus for Zoo Gardens after dinner we studied for a while and wrote Bro Kirkham and Clark at ataham Evening by in visityation to uncle Wm in company with Brother Palmer, Baker & Hamblin. Spent a very pleasant evening got back to 36 at 12:30 pm also received two photos of uncle family Tuesday Aug 9/1898 Fine This morning we hearned 4 verses of the Bible while eating in that way we learn the Bible Bro Palmer teacher After dinner 6 of us went to the Queen Stables and saw the horses and State carriages and being one hundred and thirty years old Built for George 3rd in 1761 and is in good prevservation the horses are bred and reared in the barns and are of pure callass cream Black and Bays They like the queen are Pedigreed and are handed down from father to son ever since the Queen restricted them every colt that is not a perfect collare is kild they show the efects of being inbread as for instance the original sires were large 17 hands high the present are small and bad shaped or some of them are. Evening we, Bro Hamblin, Hibard and myself held an out door meeting which was largely attended. Bro H and I talking There were several who opposed us and tried to break up our meeting and called us hand man names We bore our testimony of the divinity of Joseph Smith and said we were not ashamed of the people called Mormons and we know our teaching is in accorance with holy writ Wednesday Aug 10th/1898 Cloudy This afternoon Bro Clark and I went visiting the saints and spent a very pleasant evening with Bro Harris conversing on the Gospel and explained the necesity of the word of widsom to them They are new members of the church and need encouraging In the fornoon we spent the time in studying the Bible, ect. Thursday Aug 11/1898 morning had the usual bible study for an hour then went to the city biduct to hear Dr. Parker preach but he had you an his halley days is very warm and sultry. Evening had a meeting in the Hall and attended Friday Aug 12/1898 Still warm. After our usual Bible class we staid in and studied until evening and then went on the street and held an outdoor meeting. We had a fair attendance and no opposition. Bro Harbous and I ocupied the time both speaking Tine This temper over The weather fairly well for half an hour each. I spoke on the divine nission of Joseph Smith Johnson of Ogden was with us. Mrs. Saturday Aug 13/1898 Warm Spent the day in reading Evening went to the European Theater (west end cost 6d the performance was of the variety kind) Got home at 12 Saturday is a dull night for the Gosple work and little is done in this line. Sunday Aug 14/1898 Very warm This morning was spent in preaching in the park reagent close to the Zoo Gard There were for other congregation on the grand We had just a fair attendance. Bro Palmer and Clark was the speakers After dinner we then held our usual afternoon meetting with quite a number of visiting elders present and heard from 5 of them. Evening I with Bro Hamblin went to Stratford to preach and was invited to tea by Sister Leach of Stratford. Bro Hamblin and I talked After the meeting we all went to the grove and held outdoor meeting I also had quite a conversation with a miss Wnitaker on the Gosple We then took train for London stopped to hear the church of England People There met cousin Floria, Uncle Ben's daughter After meeting had a chat with her. She told me she did not think she could come to our meeting as she was afraid that her minister would not like it. she is very much in love wioth her church. Monday Aug 15th/1898 Fine After breakfast went and had a bath also met Mis Buckel of the 10th Ward She is going home on the 19th of the month. Staid indoor and read the weather being very warm 84o in the shade and one feels the heat more than you do at home when thermomiter says 98-100o Evening went on upper high street and held an outdoor meeting There were 3 or four hundred present and they listened very attentively for an hour. Bro Palmer talked most of the time Some of the usual questions was put and I was called to answer them One was that Bro Hamblin said that unless everyone were baptized they would not go to heaven and he said (the oposer) that children that had died would not be damned. in answer I repeated the words of the Savior let little children came to me and forbade them not for of sutch is the kingdom of heaven and unless we become as little children we could not enter the Kingdom of God. Tuesday Aug 16/1898 hot This morning we, Bro Palmer and I, was called to go and administer to Bro Armsby's child who was very sick of bronkitis. The little one is very low indeed In the afternoon in company with Bro Stander I went to the park and studied for awhile Afternoon Bro Briken invited all the boys at 36 to a wedding dinner as they had been married 18years also his birthday he being 40 years old. We all went to the went end to dinner with him at a fashionable cafe. They served 7 courses all being very nice. After dinner Bro Harber, Sister Benkin and Elder Baker and I went to Battersy Park to Bro Silcon to hold meeting but they not being prepared could not hold a meeting Had a nice Gospel chat and got home at 11:30 Sister Briken is very pleasant and told us the history of her life from leaving Sweden to her passage to Britain. Wednesday Aug 17/1898 Cooler this morning. This morning Bro. Palmer and I went as far as uncle Wm H e get his watch previous to going to the Isle of White I staid at uncle Williams untill 12 noon and had a short conversation with aunt also uncle. From there I went to aunt Morria and spent the afternoon talking with aunt--also met cousin Lily and Cliss I staid until 12 midnight conversing with them on the Gosple. Aunt lives at no 33 Bookham Street She ocupies two rooms and they are in a very bad condition. One house is bedroom, workshop and kitchen; the other is d...bed room and sitting room. the furniture is in a fithy kitchen and the beds are very poorly kept and dirty. Aunt spend her time between drinking beer and love making. She truly needs reformation and some one to put in the right. Thursday Aug 18/1898 Cool but fine We had the usual Bible class this fornoon. after dinner went in the town Afternoon spent the time in reading ect. Evening had meeting indoors. Bro Hamblin and I were the speakers and ocupied half an hour each. There were a very fine attendance and all seemed to be satisfied. Evening had had a chat with uncle about aunt Morria cousins Promised to come to meeting but failed to come Went to bed at 11:30 p.m. Friday Aug 19/1898 Fine and cool. Today we are reopening the office and having a general clean up and all help in doing so. After supper we went out on the street and held a meeting I taking charge and gave the opening adress then called on Bro Hamblin who talked for an half hour. We then had Bro. Pat of the Novage Conference talk for a short time who lives in the 16th Ward S.L. City. The meeting was fairly well attended and a good spirit prevailed On returning home met Cousin Edith and Eva. Bro McMurran called on us as he is on his return from Germany and Italy. He said he had traveled 70oo miles since he left London. Saturday Aug 20th/1898 Fine This fornoon I helped to send of the sors to the various branches and Saints in the London Conference. Afternoon went to uncle Wm. had a conversation with aunt Lizzie From there went to see Uncle John. He not being at home went to Lolleys or Lorenzo house. He is the oldest son of uncle John. He is very cool in manner and don't want much Goispel I made several fruitless attempts to get him to talk but he is very close mouthed. He could only find fault--it will take some time to change his mind from his way of thinking. Uncle John is full of the Gosple and wants to do what is right and would if he had his way. Got home at 1 a.m. Sunday. Sunday Aug 21/1898 Fine This morning we went to the Reagent Park and held an outdoor meeting. Bro McMurran ocupied the time and Bro Williams fore testimony to what he had said. The attendance was good all paying attention. Bro Clark being away he requested me to preside. Afternoon was well attended. We held a testimony meeting a great many testimonies was born. Evening Bro Wright of Stratford ocupied the first part of the time Bro. Thomas the latter part of the time the hall well filled and a good spirit prevailed. Bro Thomas paid his tithing 610 and spoke very true on the Gosple Also had several chats with the Saints Also a conversation with Colonel Thomas on Utah and his people also with Sister Young and others besides having a chat with uncle Wm and aunt Marria. Monday Aug 22nd/1898 Fine Still in charge of the office in Bro Clarks sted Spent the day helping Bro Harbor to get off the paint in the office The old building had been painted so many times that the paint was coming off in scales. Evening went to Higbury Park and held an outdoor meeting When we had got nearly through the rain came down in tortents for a short time. I ofered prayer and discussed the meeting got some what wet This morning I woke up with a bad cold and the rain did not help matters very much Went to bed at 11 pm.
