2015 Fall Experience Week
September 21-25
Local Foods Week (Activity Leaders – David , Joan and Reta)
● No cost
● 30 students
We will harvest apples, grind wheat, extract honey from the MNCS hives, visit a local
farm and apiary, and prepare food for a local foods luncheon.
Pow! Boof! Crack! (Activity Leader – Jennifer)
● Cost: $10.00
● 20 students
In this experience, we will learn how to create comic books. Not an artist? No problem!
We will be learning some basic techniques and tricks, creating story boards, mastering
ink and having fun! We will be looking at examples of published works and
watching…comic book based movies, of course.
BWCA Trip (Activity Leaders – Anthony, Nancy and Paul)
● Cost: $125
● 14 students
Spend a week in our amazing Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness of Northern
Minnesota. Develop wilderness awareness, ethics, teamwork skills, navigation ability,
and canoeing/camping skills. We will travel through the Little Indian Sioux North entry
and spend the week on one of the area lakes. We will also visit the Soudan Underground
Mine State Park as part of the trip. Please contact Anthony, Nancy or Paul if you have
any questions.
Science and Society of the MN Prairie-Pothole Region (Activity Leaders Jim, Cory & Nichole)
● Cost $10.00
● Bring a bag lunch each day
● Dress for the outdoors everyday
● Wear sturdy full toe shoes (ie. boots, tennis shoes etc.)
● 20 students
This experience will spend much of the time outside of the building. Go on field trips,
participate in service projects and enjoy guest speakers talking about the past, present and
future of this fascinating ecosystem.
Duluth (Activity Leaders-Dean and Diann)
● Cost $130
● 12 students (6 males/ 6 females)
We will travel to the beautiful city of Duluth, MN and beyond. Come along for a fun and
exciting stay at the Edgewater Park & Hotel, located in Duluth for three nights. We will
be exploring possible activities such as: hiking at Gooseberry Falls State Park, Hawk
Ridge, Canal Park, Enger Tower, Glensheen Mansion, and other sights/history events.
We may even venture into Wisconsin (not just for the cheese, either). The hotel, most
meals, gas, and fees for events will be included in the price. Bring spending money if
you want to purchase souvenirs or other items not covered including a meal or two at
restaurants.
 Walking shoes, swimsuit, seasonal clothing, personal items (such as a soft pillow
from home) for the overnights and of course a great/fun attitude are a must.
 We will return Thursday afternoon.
 We will spend Friday researching and finalizing.
Pottery/ Ceramics/Art (Activity Leader – Jake)
● No cost
● 6-8 students
We will spend all week playing in the MUD! Students will learn how to use the pottery
wheel and will also learn hand building techniques. Visits to local art studios/museums
are in the works. Come ready to get DIRTY and make something meaningful!
Rocketry and Flight (Activity Leaders - Nick , Nichole, and Cory)
● Cost: $10.00 for rocket supplies
● 15-20 students
Build and launch some rockets and learn about the basic physics of flight, lift, drag,
force, Bernoulli’s principle. Guest speakers will bring even bigger rockets and
information about careers in physics and flight. Should be a blast…!
World Languages: Spanish Experience Week (Activity Leaders – Lorie,
Chak, and Chrissy)
● Cost $10.00 for transportation and cooking supplies
○ Note: Students will pay for their own food and drinks on any field trips
● 15-18 students
This is an experience week that involves learning basic Spanish words and beginning
conversations in Spanish. We will explore the histories, cultures and foods of Spanish
speaking countries. There will also be a chance to see an Hispanic Art and Mural exhibit
in the cities.

● Write the titles of your top 3 experience week activity choices in the box below
● Parents, student and advisor must sign this sheet in order for it to be valid
● All requests must be turned-in to Joan Skelly by Friday, September 4th at 3:30pm
● If the student does not complete a form, an activity will be chosen for him/her by MNCS
staff
● MNCS staff will do their best to honor each student’s choice but no student is guaranteed
a spot in any particular activity
● Payment for activities are due by Thursday, September 17th (except BWCA that has its own
payment timeline)
