Power Interviewing edmolol A learning module on interviewing with UTB and TSC cohorts By Jaime Villanueva Instructional Unit -4 IU 4: The Instructional Strategy Specific Goal Upon completing this module, UTB and TSC students will be able to successfully present themselves at a job or internship interview. Overview This instructional unit was created in order to train UTB and TSC students in successful interviewing. The majority of the students have probably had an interview before, either for a job or internship opportunity. The training that is being developed will serve as a resource to communicate and provide detailed steps and expectations for the purpose of successful interviewing for a job or internship. This section of the instructional unit consists of the following sections: An explanation of the instructional strategies selected. A description of the media selection and delivery mode. First draft of the instructional materials. Instructional Strategies Below is a description of the overall instructional strategies used in this Instructional Unit. Pre-Instructional Activities The pre-instructional activity will consist of a podcast, which is embedded in a picture using the application Fotobabbles. The Fotobabbles video will explain in great detail the steps necessary for a successful interview. After completion of the video podcast, the UTB student will gain an understanding on why this instructional unit is relevant in completing all key components. The script for the podcast will be found in Appendix I. A very short rubric guide will be included for the learners to answer before the training sessions begin. The anticipation guide will include a point system from one to five. One is a weak score, and five is a strong score a learner can answer. The first question asked will be an entry level question that will be answered with a yes or no answer. After the first question is asked, the next 20 questions will be answered with a five point scale answer. This rubric will need to be completed before and after the training is over to provide feedback on mastery of the instructional unit by the learner. If the learner does not master any part of the instructional unit, the learner will need to review that portion again until the learner gains an understanding of it. The anticipation guide will be found in Appendix II. Content Presentation The training guide in Appendix III and all supplemental materials of this instructional unit will be presented on a website, specifically blackboard under my organizations/training tab. The guide will be accessible to all current UTB students 24 hours, seven days a week. The training guide will have detailed instructions on how to access all the information, including supplemental material links. If needed, the learners can and are encouraged to review the materials as many times necessary before moving forward with the instructional unit. Additionally, the learners will have the option to print the instructional documents if necessary. The guide will also have an audio picture that when activated will trigger learners high order thinking. The training guide will be introduced by Oscar the Ocelot, “Interviewing Ocelot”. The UTB student will need to have a student Id assigned beforehand in order to access the blackboard under my organizations/training tab. The majority of the students probably have no past experience in interviewing so a video screencast will be developed fully. The video recording will include detailed information and examples on interviewing skills to keep the learner engaged. There will be a flow chart diagram available for the learners to guide them through the interview process and provide them a support tool through the whole process. Learner Participation The learner will be given a training and participate in the development of the final instructional unit. Questions will be embedded within the instructional unit to assess the learner’s progress. The learner will then provide detailed feedback to a participant on the instructional unit. Additionally, the learner will provide the correct answers and explanations if they are required from the learner. As the learner progresses through the instructional unit, correct responses are required before the learner can advance to the next phase of the training. In conclusion, the learner will access the instructional documents, training videos, and quizzes in order to complete the instructional unit training. Assessments In order to complete the instructional unit there is three skills the learner must have in order to access and complete. The skills include: The learner needs to be able to access a computer. The learner needs to be able to access the internet. The learner needs to be able to access the UTB/TSC Website. The entry level skills will be assessed in the anticipation guide as a pre-assessment quiz. If the learner does not have the entry level skills necessary to complete the instructional unit address in the pre-assessment. The learner will need to seek out additional training before proceeding with the instructional unit. The entry level questions will be found as the top three questions underlined in the rubric guide. As the learner flows through the training, the Ocelot Avatar will provide support and guided help to the learner in order to proceed to the next phase of the training module. Instructional questions will be asked from the learner in order to assess the learner’s knowledge of the training material. If the learner answers incorrectly, the learner will need to revisit that step again. On the other hand, if correctly answered, the student will move to the next phase of the training guide. The final step in the instructional unit will consist of the completion of the anticipation guide and the rubric II evaluation by the UTB Student. The evaluation rubric II can be found in Appendix IV. The evaluator will determine if the learner has gained knowledge by evaluating the learner’s rubric II evaluation. The evaluator will then provide feedback to the learner through email or video podcast after completion and evaluation of the evaluation rubric II. Follow-Through Activities After completion of the interview instructional unit, the learner will gain an understanding on successful interviewing for the purpose of finding a job or internship in the near future. Accessing the learner’s high order thinking skills will help the learner incorporate lessons learned during the interview process. If needed, the UTB Student can refer to the instructional training document Appendix V. Media and delivery Mode The training guide and supplemental materials will be available as a web-based tutorial and as a PDF file which will be accessible through the UTB TSC website. The instructional training will be completed individually by the learner and without help. After completion of the training, an evaluation will be conducted individually as well. The following is a detailed description of supplementary media that will be implemented for the purpose of achieving the Instructional unit goal. 1. Avatar: An avatar will be used to introduce the instructional unit and guide the learner every step of the training guide. 2. Video screencast: Several screencast videos will be developed as an interactive narration of every step necessary for a successful interview. This will allow the learner to visually see the actual steps during an interview. 3. Web based blackboard training guide: The learner’s training will be completed individually and at their own pace. The learner will have access 24 hours a day seven days a week through the UTB website/blackboard. The instructional materials will be attached as PDF files within every instructional step. 4. Google docs-Google docs will be utilized effectively to create and provide feedback on survey assessments based on the learner’s responses to the instructional unit. 5. Flow chart diagram: The learner will have access to a flow chart that explains in great detail the steps necessary to complete the instructional guide. The flowchart will guide and help the learner during every step of the training guide as visual aid. This will also help the learners access their metacognition skills. First Draft of instructional Materials The first draft of the instructional guide was developed with Microsoft Word and converted to a pdf file. The first draft is in Appendix III Summary This instructional guide utilizes several strategies in order to ignite higher order thinking from UTB students during the interview process. The instructional guide was developed for the UTB student to serve as tool and resource to communicate the step by step process of a successful interview, whether for a job or an internship opportunity. The learners will be guided throughout the training process every step of the way with visual aids and support documents. The UTB student will have to complete a pre-assessment and post assessment in order to document and evaluate the training process. This will help the evaluator and the UTB student with a detailed account on the level of instructional achievement of the goal. The next phase of the instructional unit is IU5 that will evaluation the instructional unit that will use the formative evaluation process. This will use Subject Matter Experts in the evaluation process. References Rodriquez,J. (n.d.). UTB Career Services . In Video Totorials .
