A learning module on interviewing with UTB and TSC cohorts
By Jaime Villanueva
Instructional Unit -4
IU 4: The Instructional Strategy
Specific Goal
Upon completing this module, UTB and TSC students will be able to successfully
present themselves at a job or internship interview.
Overview
This instructional unit was created in order to train UTB and TSC students in successful
interviewing. The majority of the students have probably had an interview before, either
for a job or internship opportunity. The training that is being developed will serve as a
resource to communicate and provide detailed steps and expectations for the purpose
of successful interviewing for a job or internship. This section of the instructional unit
consists of the following sections:



An explanation of the instructional strategies selected.
A description of the media selection and delivery mode.
First draft of the instructional materials.
Instructional Strategies
Below is a description of the overall instructional strategies used in this Instructional
Unit.
Pre-Instructional Activities
The pre-instructional activity will consist of a podcast, which is embedded in a picture
using the application Fotobabbles. The Fotobabbles video will explain in great detail the
steps necessary for a successful interview. After completion of the video podcast, the
UTB student will gain an understanding on why this instructional unit is relevant in
completing all key components. The script for the podcast will be found in Appendix I.
A very short rubric guide will be included for the learners to answer before the training
sessions begin. The anticipation guide will include a point system from one to five. One
is a weak score, and five is a strong score a learner can answer. The first question
asked will be an entry level question that will be answered with a yes or no answer.
After the first question is asked, the next 20 questions will be answered with a five point
scale answer. This rubric will need to be completed before and after the training is over
to provide feedback on mastery of the instructional unit by the learner. If the learner
does not master any part of the instructional unit, the learner will need to review that
portion again until the learner gains an understanding of it. The anticipation guide will be
found in Appendix II.
Content Presentation
The training guide in Appendix III and all supplemental materials of this instructional unit
will be presented on a website, specifically blackboard under my organizations/training
tab. The guide will be accessible to all current UTB students 24 hours, seven days a
week. The training guide will have detailed instructions on how to access all the
information, including supplemental material links. If needed, the learners can and are
encouraged to review the materials as many times necessary before moving forward
with the instructional unit. Additionally, the learners will have the option to print the
instructional documents if necessary. The guide will also have an audio picture that
when activated will trigger learners high order thinking. The training guide will be
introduced by Oscar the Ocelot, “Interviewing Ocelot”.
The UTB student will need to have a student Id assigned beforehand in order to access
the blackboard under my organizations/training tab. The majority of the students
probably have no past experience in interviewing so a video screencast will be
developed fully. The video recording will include detailed information and examples on
interviewing skills to keep the learner engaged.
There will be a flow chart diagram available for the learners to guide them through the
interview process and provide them a support tool through the whole process.
Learner Participation
The learner will be given a training and participate in the development of the final
instructional unit. Questions will be embedded within the instructional unit to assess the
learner’s progress. The learner will then provide detailed feedback to a participant on
the instructional unit. Additionally, the learner will provide the correct answers and
explanations if they are required from the learner. As the learner progresses through the
instructional unit, correct responses are required before the learner can advance to the
next phase of the training. In conclusion, the learner will access the instructional
documents, training videos, and quizzes in order to complete the instructional unit
training.
Assessments
In order to complete the instructional unit there is three skills the learner must have in
order to access and complete. The skills include:
 The learner needs to be able to access a computer.
 The learner needs to be able to access the internet.
 The learner needs to be able to access the UTB/TSC Website.
The entry level skills will be assessed in the anticipation guide as a pre-assessment
quiz. If the learner does not have the entry level skills necessary to complete the
instructional unit address in the pre-assessment. The learner will need to seek out
additional training before proceeding with the instructional unit. The entry level
questions will be found as the top three questions underlined in the rubric guide.
As the learner flows through the training, the Ocelot Avatar will provide support and
guided help to the learner in order to proceed to the next phase of the training module.
Instructional questions will be asked from the learner in order to assess the learner’s
knowledge of the training material. If the learner answers incorrectly, the learner will
need to revisit that step again. On the other hand, if correctly answered, the student will
move to the next phase of the training guide.
The final step in the instructional unit will consist of the completion of the anticipation
guide and the rubric II evaluation by the UTB Student. The evaluation rubric II can be
found in Appendix IV. The evaluator will determine if the learner has gained knowledge
by evaluating the learner’s rubric II evaluation. The evaluator will then provide feedback
to the learner through email or video podcast after completion and evaluation of the
evaluation rubric II.
Follow-Through Activities
After completion of the interview instructional unit, the learner will gain an understanding
on successful interviewing for the purpose of finding a job or internship in the near
future. Accessing the learner’s high order thinking skills will help the learner incorporate
lessons learned during the interview process. If needed, the UTB Student can refer to
the instructional training document Appendix V.
Media and delivery Mode
The training guide and supplemental materials will be available as a web-based tutorial
and as a PDF file which will be accessible through the UTB TSC website. The
instructional training will be completed individually by the learner and without help. After
completion of the training, an evaluation will be conducted individually as well. The
following is a detailed description of supplementary media that will be implemented for
the purpose of achieving the Instructional unit goal.
1. Avatar: An avatar will be used to introduce the instructional unit and guide the
learner every step of the training guide.
2. Video screencast: Several screencast videos will be developed as an interactive
narration of every step necessary for a successful interview. This will allow the
learner to visually see the actual steps during an interview.
3. Web based blackboard training guide: The learner’s training will be completed
individually and at their own pace. The learner will have access 24 hours a day
seven days a week through the UTB website/blackboard. The instructional
materials will be attached as PDF files within every instructional step.
4. Google docs-Google docs will be utilized effectively to create and provide
feedback on survey assessments based on the learner’s responses to the
instructional unit.
5. Flow chart diagram: The learner will have access to a flow chart that explains in
great detail the steps necessary to complete the instructional guide. The flowchart
will guide and help the learner during every step of the training guide as visual aid.
This will also help the learners access their metacognition skills.
First Draft of instructional Materials
The first draft of the instructional guide was developed with Microsoft Word and
converted to a pdf file. The first draft is in Appendix III
Summary
This instructional guide utilizes several strategies in order to ignite higher order thinking
from UTB students during the interview process. The instructional guide was developed
for the UTB student to serve as tool and resource to communicate the step by step
process of a successful interview, whether for a job or an internship opportunity. The
learners will be guided throughout the training process every step of the way with visual
aids and support documents. The UTB student will have to complete a pre-assessment
and post assessment in order to document and evaluate the training process. This will
help the evaluator and the UTB student with a detailed account on the level of
instructional achievement of the goal. The next phase of the instructional unit is IU5 that
will evaluation the instructional unit that will use the formative evaluation process. This
will use Subject Matter Experts in the evaluation process.

the interview. This will help you market yourself effectively with the interviewer. A cover letter
and resume is a representation of what you have accomplished in your chosen career.
Remember to bring a note pad and pen to take notes during the interview process.

for. The third paragraph refers the reader
to the resume. The last paragraph mentions
a request for a personnel interview.
3.None of the above.
4.The format does not really matter as
long provide something to recruiter to read.
Determine which of the following are necessary items to have
during the interview process?
1. No notepad or pen required during the interview.
2. Some of the interviews require a note pad
and pen but not all.
3. Although no notepad or pen is required
it is a good idea to bring
during the interview.
4. None of the above
Step Two: Dress for success
It is important to remember to always dress professionally during the interview
process. You always want to provide a first good impression to the interviewer
and it also sends a positive message about your professionalism. Successful
candidates have always practice the golden rule of always maintain a professional
look. It is just as important to look professional as it is to communicate
professionally on a daily basis.
You should
always wear
appropriate
shoe and
attire and
also selfcheck
before the
interview
process.
Let’s recap what the second step in interviewing process
entails.
Which of the following statements listed below
best describes the ideal dress attire and
grooming qualities a student should present themselves
during an interview?
1. Casual attire and shoes and a self-check
is acceptable during an interview.
2. Millennial’s are exempt for dressing
professional during the interview.
3. Professional business casual attire and
shoes and self-check is a must during
an interview.
4. None of the above
Step Three: Preparing before for the interview
Preparing before the interview provides the potential employer a snap shot image
on how well prepared you are for the job. It is also important to rehearse your
success stories with someone you trust and ask for feedback on the story. The
story needs to be impactful and relevant to the job description. Prior to the
interview analyze the job description carefully and extract all action verbs in the
job description and import them into your success stories. This is the key to a
successful interview.
Preparing
before for the
interview is
very important
thing to do
because it
shows the
employer you
are prepared
for the
interview
Let’s recap what the third step in the interviewing
process entails.
.
Which of the following statement is true?
1.) Maintain a positive attitude
and image is very important
during an interview but tell a
success story is just fluff.
2.) Maintain a positive attitude
and image is very important during
an interview but tell a success
story is just as important.
3.) Sharing personnel success stories
and maintaining a positive attitude
is important but a positive image
not so much during an interview.
4.)All of the above
Step Four: Asking the right questions during the interviewing
You should by now understand the importance of preparing before the interview
process begins. It is good practice to write down questions to ask the potential
employer before the interview. When the employer asks during the interview do
you have question for me? You should respond with at least three important
questions you would like answered by the employer. What traits does your ideal
candidate have? What are the benefits offered by your company? How long is
your companies training program? Rehearsing and asking these three questions
will help you gain a better understanding of the company and the job
performance duties.
Before the
interviews
rehearse the
question you will
ask the recruiter
before the
interview is over.
Let’s recap what the fourth step
is in the interviewing process entails
Which three questions should be asked
during the interview process?
1.) What does your ideal candidate
look like? What are the benefits offered?
How long is the job training?
2.) What do employers look for in a
new hire? What are the benefits offered?
How long is the job training?
3.) None of the above
5. Do you offer benefits?
What is your Ideal candidate look like?

Step Five: Maintaining a positive attitude and image
Remember to maintain a positive attitude before and during the interview
process. At the same time maintain a positive self-image. Employers most of the
time look for attitude traits potential candidates poses. At the same time, the
majority of employers look for candidates that have positive attitudes and view
others with the same characteristics they have.
Let’s recap what the fifth step in the interviewing
process entails.
Which of the following statement best describes
a true statement about positive attitude and self- image
during the interview process ?
1.) Maintain a positive attitude
and image is very important during
an interview but tell a success story
is just fluff.
2.)Maintain a positive attitude
and image is very important during
an interview but tell a success story
is just as important.
2.) Sharing personnel success stories
and maintaining a positive attitude
is important but a positive image
not so much during an interview.
4.)All of the above
Step Six: Being mindful of your nonverbal & verbal communication
There are many types of communication use in today’s society but the two we will
discuss today are verbal and non- verbal communication. Using the wrong type of
communication can lead to the message being misunderstood by the receiver.
Using verbal communication effectively is important when trying to convey a
specific message to the employer. Watch for pitch, tone and verbal obstructions
when communicating with employers. The second type of communication is
nonverbal communication. This can also lead to the message being
misunderstood by not using complete sentences or not completing a specific
concept in writing.
Let’s recap what the Sixth step
in the interviewing process entails.
Which of the following statements
is the correct answer as it pertains
to non-verbal and verbal communication
during an interview.
1.) The applicant should
remember that non-verbal
communication is
more important than verbal
communication during the interview?
2.) The applicant should be
mindful of neither verbal nor
nonverbal communication
during the interview?
3.) The Interviewer should be
somewhat mindful of verbal
communication only during the
interview?
4.) The applicant should
remember to be mindful of
verbal and nonverbal communication
is equally important during the interview?
Step Seven: Sending a thank you letter
The majority of the time most students or applicants failed to utilize the
importance of sending a thank you letter to the recruiter after the interview. It
provides an advantage to the applicant who follows through with a simple thank
you letter. The three ways an applicant can send a thank you letter. The first way
is through the U.S mailing system. The second way is through a professional email
and last way is a follow up phone call.
.
Let’s recap what the Seventh step in the interviewing process entails.
Which of the following statements is the best answer after the interview has ended?
1.) Sending a thank you post card and a fax after the interview is appropriate after
the interview?
2.) Sending a thank you telegram and a phone call is appropriate after the interview?
3.) Sending a thank you letter and professional email or a phone call is appropriate
after the interview?
4.) Sending a Thank you letter and professional email or a message on twitter is
appropriate after the interview?
