Spring Itches,
Allergies & Parasites
Dogs and cats can suffer from itchy
skin for a variety of reasons and most of
these are preventable and treatable.
Spring is here and with it comes the risk of an increase in skin
conditions and parasites in our pets.
Keeping your pets coat well-groomed during
spring will help them stay cool and reduce the risk
of itchy spring skin. The combination of warmer
temperatures and seeding grasses mean that itchy
skin is much more prevalent in spring. Dogs and cats
can develop allergies to a range of things including
plants, pollens and grasses, and flea saliva (FAD or
‘flea allergy dermatitis’.)
There are a range of mild shampoos, gels and lotions for itchy
skin, such as Paw Nutriderm Shampoo, Paw Triderm Calming
Gel and Aloveen Shampoo and conditioner. It is also worth adding
omega oils such as Essential 6 to skin, or Megaderm to your pet’s
diet to help maintain optimum skin health. See your veterinarian for
a definitive diagnosis and treatment if you think your pet may have
an allergy. Depending on your veterinarian’s advice, there are
also a variety of diets on the market that may help with your pet’s
skin condition.
FLEAS
Although fleas can thrive in our warm Australian homes even in
winter, they are much more prevalent in the hotter months. The
fleas that you see on your pet make up only 5% of the total flea
burden in your pets environment- so if you see 5 fleas on your
dog or cat, there are likely to be 95 more in your environment ( in
varying stages of development.)
These nasty parasites don’t just cause itching and discomfort, but
can cause allergies such as flea allergy dermatitis and can also
leave your pet with other parasites such a tapeworm.
Prevention is definitely better than cure, so ensure you continue
to use good quality flea products such as Advantage, Frontline,
Activyl or Comfortis year round.
TICKS
One of the most deadly of the warm weather parasites is the
paralysis tick. Paralysis ticks may be found in many bushy coastal
areas in Australia. The natural host of the paralysis tick are
kangaroos, bandicoots, possums and koalas, but unfortunately
these dangerous parasites will also attach to our domestic pets
(and humans as well!).
Symptoms of paralysis may develop within days of the tick
attaching to your pet. The toxin that the tick excretes can quickly
lead to paralysis, organ failure and death. Immediate veterinary
treatment for tick paralysis is crucial, although once again
prevention is the key.
SUNBURN AND SKIN CANCER
Just like us, our furry friends can be susceptible to
sunburn and skin cancer. There is a higher risk in areas
of pink skin (such as the tummy, ears or nose) or in pets
with a white coat. As with most of these skin issues,
prevention is far better than cure.
Limit your pets sun exposure, and
keep them out of the sun altogether
during the hottest part of the day.
Daily searching of your pet for ticks
during the warmer months is vital. There
are such a wide range of tick prevention
products as well - topical products such
as Advantix, and Frontline, tick collars such
as Preventic, Bay-O-Pet Kiltix or Scalibor, oral products such as
Bravecto, NexGard and washes such as Fidos Fre-Itch rinse
are all helpful in controlling these dangerous parasites.
There are several sunscreen products on the
market such as Petkin Sunwipes or Sunstick
that provide SPF15 protection from our harsh
sun.
