This guide aims to outline and signpost information
and sources of financial assitance relating to all aspects
of sport in Wales.
Welsh Government
Community Facilities and Activities
Programme
The Community Facilities and Activities Programme
(CFAP) is a grant scheme operated by the Welsh
Government to help community and voluntary
organisations provide facilities or carry out activities
which will promote the regeneration of communities.
(CFAP)’s final bidding round closed on the 31st July
2012. The programme is now in a consultation period
which seeks views on changes proposed to the
programme. If you have any queries please contact the
relevant case officer for your area.

Sport Wales Support
Sport Wales is the national organisation which works
on behalf of the Welsh Government to develop and
promote sports and physical activity programmes in
Wales. Local authorities and National Governing Bodies
of sport work with Sport Wales to deliver Welsh
Government policy.
Set out below are a number of funding schemes
operated by Sport Wales which develop sport and
physical activity in Wales.
Community Chest
Community Chest offers a grant of up to £1,500 in
any 12 month period to organisations which
encourage people to become more physically active
and which raise the standard of existing activities.
The scheme is not open to individual members of the
public, or to schools or associated bodies who are
arranging activities for school children who participate
in the 5x60 scheme.
Applications are welcome at any time.

Development Grant
The Development Grant offers a grant of between
£1,501 - £25,000 to cover aspects of projects such as:

Development of training facilities and equipment.

Purchase of land or rights of land to develop
activity areas.

Start-up grants to support new enterprises.

Coach education.

Elite Cymru
Elite Cymru provides support to the most highly
promising athletes in non-Olympic sports. Members of
the scheme are provided with:

Welsh Sports Association
The Welsh Sports Association is the umbrella body for
the National Governing Bodies of Sport and Physical
Recreation in Wales.
Set out below are some of the available grants from the
Welsh Sports Association.
The Overseas Expedition Grant
The Overseas Expedition Grant funds up to 50% of
expedition costs for Welsh individuals on overseas
expeditions. Funding rarely exceeds £1,000 and is
normally given for the purpose of enhancing the
development of mountaineering, caving, cave diving
and canoeing.
Responsibility for this grant is handled by the Welsh
Sports Association’s Outdoor Pursuits Group, and
enquiries should be made to them.

Talent Cymru
Talent Cymru provides extensive support to Welsh
athletes to allow them to maximise their opportunity to
gain entry onto the UK Sports Performance Pathway
(Olympic and Paralympic sports) or Elite Cymru (nonOlympic sports).
The Sports Safety Grant
The Sports Safety Grant assists national sports safety
organisations, sports safety clubs and rescue teams.
Maximum grants awarded are 75% of total project
costs to a limit of £7,500 for capital expenditure and
£2,500 for revenue expenditure

The Federation of Disability Sports
Wales
The Charity Commission
The Federation of Disability Sports Wales is the Welsh
Government’s lead organisation for the development
of sport and physical activities for disabled people in
Wales. It offers advice on potential routes to funding
for disabled people.
Many funding streams, including some of those listed
below, are only available to groups with charitable
status. The Charity Commission website provides
comprehensive information and an application pack
for people who wish to register a charity.

The Charity Commission offer advice and guidance on
the application process, including the provision of
model documents and help in setting the objectives of
the charity.
SportsAid Wales

SportsAid Wales is a charity which aims to help young
British athletes at the start of their journey. To qualify
for support from Sports Aid Wales Athletes must have
met/exceeded minimum performance criteria in their
chosen sport and will need approval from their
governing body.

Foundations
The Community Foundation in Wales
The Community Foundation in Wales (CFiW) is a charity
which provides funding to community based projects
throughout Wales. The CFiW administers a number of
funds which are available to local groups and charities
in Wales. These grants are suitable for capital revenue
expenses or the continuous running costs where the
grant being applied for is for a specific element of the
costs.

ASDA Foundation
The ASDA Foundation assists registered charities and
community groups within the UK that require financial
assistance. The Foundation only supports a limited
number of requests that have the direct involvement
from ASDA colleagues. No minimum or maximum
grant amount is stipulated, and applications may be
made at any time. ASDA colleagues will typically
support local charities, community groups, schools,
playgroups, community centres and football teams.

Garfield Weston Foundation
The Garfield Weston Foundation provides funding to
charitable organisations in the UK. There are no
specific priorities for funding and a wide range of
charitable activities are supported.

Lord’s Taverners Foundation
Funding is available to encourage UK-based young
people with disabilities to participate in sporting
activities with the provision of manual sports
wheelchairs, specially adapted minibuses, sporting
equipment and the support of the game of cricket at
grass roots level.

Bernard Sunley Charitable Foundation
The Foundation provides grant funding in support of a
wide range of charitable projects that aim to improve
the quality of life for the young, deprived,
disadvantaged, disabled and elderly in the UK.

Eligible costs include capital funding for building and
refurbishment of amateur sports facilities and also
revenue funding for physical activity projects.

Dickie Bird Foundation
The Dickie Bird foundation provides support for
individuals throughout Great Britain with the aim of
helping disadvantaged young people. Applicants must
be aged under 18 and must be unable to raise the
finance through other means.

Rowing Foundation
The Rowing Foundation aims to aid and support young
people (those under 18 or still in full time education)
and the disabled of all ages through their participation
in rowing. Grants are given to organisations, clubs and
schools that are involved in the water elements of the
sport of Rowing and who are individually affiliated to
British Rowing.
Grants are typically between £500 - £2,000, and
applications can be made at any time.

The Millennium Stadium Charitable
Trust
Co-op Community Fund
The Millennium Stadium Charitable Trust provides
grants for voluntary organisations in Wales in support
of sport, art, the community and the environment.
Funding is issued according to the geographical area
that an organisation has a remit to cover. Three
categories of organisation have been identified by the
Trust:

Local Organisations - Awards of up to £2,500 are
available for organisations with a remit to serve
their local community or town.

Regional Organisations - Awards of up to £7,500
are available for organisations with a remit to
cover a region or local authority-wide area of
Wales.

National Organisations - Awards of up to £12,500
are available for organisations with a remit to
cover the whole of Wales and that are operating in
the majority of counties in Wales.

The Co-op Community Fund grant funding scheme
allows community groups, self-help organisations and
charities across the UK to benefit from funding for a
range of community projects. No stipulations are made
for match funding and grants typically range from
£100 to £2,000. There is no deadline for applications.
Eligible costs include running costs, equipment, event
costs, rent or fixtures, sport or computer equipment.

GwirVol Street Games Grant Scheme
The aim of this scheme is to boost the number of
young people (aged 16 – 25) volunteering in sports
within disadvantaged communities of Wales. There are
no limits on the type of sports that will be supported,
from football to cheerleading. Project funding of up to
£2,000 per project is available. As well as funding, the
projects will also have access to training, support and
mentoring, along with qualifications. This scheme is
open to not for profit organisations including
community groups and sports clubs.

Cash 4 Clubs
Football Aid (Field of Dreams)
The scheme offers grants ranging from £250 to £1,000
to community sports clubs based in the UK and
registered with their sports’ National Governing Body
or local authority. Application forms are available from
the Cash 4 Clubs website. There are no deadlines for
submitting applications.
This scheme provides support for voluntary and
charitable organisations in the UK for projects which
cure, prevent or improve the lifestyles of children and
young people with diabetes; and organisations that
have been nominated by a Football League or Club to
improve or develop services/ facilities for people in
areas of need.

Ron Pickering Memorial Fund
Financial support is available for young athletes in
Great Britain who are still in education to help them
with training and equipment costs.
Applicants must be aged 15 and 23 years, medallists
from their National Schools AA, AAA U17, & U20 or U23
Championships or in the top six of the appropriate UK
ranking lists.
The application process begins each year on 1 October
and closes on 30 November.

Lottery Funding
The Welsh branch of the Big Lottery Fund delivers
funding to a range of different projects which meet the
priorities set out in policies laid down by the Welsh
Government.
The Big Lottery Fund website has a Funding Finder
which has been set up to enable individuals and
community groups to locate funding for a variety of
different projects.
Its website also has a constituent support page which
aims to help elected public representatives provide
their constituents with information on funding
schemes available in their locality.
