Long Eaton United's new signing Daniel Blair made his debut last weekend for the Premier Division club. Tony Starkey's season was brought to an abrupt halt in August when he suffered a broken ankle and severe damage to ligaments and tendons during a match at home to Brodsworth Welfare. He signed from Hednesford Town and NCEL followers will know him from his Carlton Town days where he played a major part in their promotion to the UniBond League. To honour his contribution to the club's move up the National League System over the past few years, a game has been set up between a team of Shirebrook Legends and a side made up of exprofessionals. Long Eaton's club website says: "Danny is a great addition to Long Eaton United. "He will add quality and pace to our front line but can also play in a number of other positions." The Mel Stirland AllStars team includes Kevin Pressman, Lawrie Madden, John Pearson, Greg Fee, John Newsome, David Hurst and Steve Adams. His first appearance was the narrow 10 defeat at home to Eccleshill United. Also turning out will be Shaun McCauley, Ernie Moss, David Pugh, Bob Newton, Andy Kowalski, Phil Brown, Steve Charles, Keith Edwards and Brian Peck. Elections For New Trust Board Begin It takes place at Langwith Road on Sunday the 4th of November with a 1pm kickoff and refreshments are available all day. The entrance fee is £3.00 for adults, £1.50 concessions and £1 for children. The NCEL Premier Division side say on their website: "Please come along, bring the family and support a loyal servant of the club." Testimonial Celebration For Holness (Source: Scarbrough Athletic) After an amazing few months in which the members of Seadog Trust formed Scarborough Athletic FC, members have the chance to elect its new Board of Directors. Eleven candidates are up for the ten places and ballot papers will be sent out to members during the upcoming week. A list of the candidates, along with a personal statement from each of the hopefuls, can be found on the Trust's website at http://www.seadogtrust.com. The event, at Pride Park on Friday the 16th of November, is in celebration of player Corin Holness who is in his testimonial year at the club. It begins at 7.30pm and guests include comedian Roy Walker with music from Urban Intro. Taylor said that "a contested election is always important for democracy and, given the pace at which the Seadog Trust and Scarborough Athletic are moving forward, no one can be in any doubt that the Trust has not only saved Scarborough from football extinction, but has laid the foundations for a positive and dynamic future. Tickets cost £30 including buffet and the club would especially like some of Corin's old teammates to come to the occasion. "Membership of the Trust in Scarborough has gone up by 200% in a matter of months and this really does give a real sense of optimism for the future. For tickets contact either Tony Shaw (07966) 197246, Colin Tunnicliffe (07916) 124534 or Corin Holness (07740) 682186. MATCH REVIEW (Round 23 –Sat 27th Oct) Only three points separate the top five sides as the battle for supremacy hots up in the NCEL Premier Division. Nostell Miners Welfare remain top although they now only lead on goal difference following a 31 defeat at Eccleshill United. Cameron Kerin opened the scoring for the hosts in the first half and Jordan Missin got the second on his debut after the break. Ben Gilbert gave Nostell a glimmer of hope but Paul Baker made sure of the points four minutes from time to move Eccleshill United up into ninth. Winterton Rangers have joined the leaders on 25 points after a thrilling 32 victory at home to Liversedge who drop to fifth. Greg Archer gave them the perfect start on three minutes before Matthew Sparks scored the first of two goals in the second half to draw level. Andy Holt hit a brace in the last twenty minutes before Sparks' second to claim the win. Pickering Town have moved up to third, one point behind the top two, after notching up their sixth straight win, claiming a 32 victory at Selby Town. An Ashley Longstaff penalty on 64 minutes claimed a point for Maltby Main in a 11 draw at Armthorpe Welfare after Stephen Rock had opened the scoring. IN THE MEDIA James Tevendale opened the scoring for the away side before a Gavin Hunter own goal levelled matters by the break. Free Admission To Carnegie Match Rob Spencer then put Sports ahead soon after the interval before the match turned around, first through Ben Cressey's equaliser and Tevendale's winner with five minutes to go. Leeds Met Carnegie's recent NCEL Division One match against AFC Emley was free to watch. Glasshoughton Welfare and Long Eaton United shared the spoils at Leeds Road. Richard Britten had put Welfare ahead on 21 minutes before David Wilkinson picked up the point for the visitors with his equaliser on 72. It is now a two horse race, meanwhile, at the top of Division One with a couple of Nottinghamshire sides both on 22 points. Gedling Town top the table on goal difference after being held to a 11 draw at Rainworth Miners Welfare. They had taken the lead through Brendan Sweeney before the halfhour mark before Rainworth claimed a point with a strike from Barry Alberry seven minutes from time. Teversal closed the gap on the leaders with a 21 win at Worsbrough Bridge Athletic. A Richard Giles strike and a Liam McFadyen own goal had them twoup in the opening eighteen minutes. Although Peter Hirst pulled one back in the 83rd minute, Teversal held on to continue their excellent start to the season. Welfare remain fourth whilst Maltby Main stay thirteenth. Barton Town Old Boys are now third after claiming the biggest victory of the afternoon. Glapwell made it seven wins out of seven in the league to climb to sixth with a 32 home win over local rivals Shirebrook Town who drop into the bottom three despite being unfortunate to take nothing from the game. They won 60 at home to Pontefract Collieries and were helped on their way with two firsthalf own goals from Karl Slater. Matty McKay also got a brace and there was one each for Sam Sharman and Craig Burdick. They go above Arnold Town who fall to seventh after a goalless draw at home to Thackley. Borrowash Victoria moved off the bottom with a morale boosting 21 home win over highflying Tadcaster Albion, Daniel Cox and Jamie Pawley with their goals. (Source: Leeds Met Carnegie) It was part of a 'Football Festival' throughout the day on the 20th of October. The idea of not having an entrance fee was agreed as a oneoff by the NCEL Management Board who also praised the club for their initiative. Students, staff, alumni and friends of the university were invited to join in the family fun at the home of Leeds Met Carnegie, Farsley Celtic's Throstle Nest ground. At the festival, local school children who are part of the partnership with Leeds Schools FA and Leeds Met Carnegie FC, took part in a mini football tournament. There were also activities and entertainment throughout the day, including a bouncy castle, a samba band and plenty of refreshments. And, it got an excellent response with over 300 people coming to watch a game that Leeds Met won 20 with goals courtesy of Gaz Johnson and Kev Ryan. Secretary and coorganiser James Earl said: "Leeds Met Carnegie FC are working hard to reintroduce the family atmosphere to the grass roots game and are hoping that this day will be a great advert for Northern Counties East football." West Yorkshire League Club In NCEL Plea (Source: Old Headingley AFC) Things are even tighter, meanwhile, at the foot of the table with only two points separating the bottom eight clubs. Brodsworth Welfare are the basement club after being thrashed 60 at Parkgate. Steve Ward and Andy Battersby grabbed two each and goals from Ryan Johnson and Matt Outram made it a very comfortable afternoon for Parkgate boss Russell Eagle. Steven Kenworthy was one of two players to claim a hattrick as, on his debut, he helped AFC Emley to a 40 win at home to Staveley Miners Welfare. Martin Thacker, meanwhile, got all of Hall Road Rangers goals in a 31 win over visitors Rossington Main. Brodsworth replace Lincoln Moorlands Railway at the bottom after a lastminute goal from Ryan Porter rescued a point for them at South Normanton Athletic with a 11 draw. A brace from Scott Phillips, including one from the penalty spot, helped Scarborough Athletic to a convincing 30 victory at home to Yorkshire Amateur. The fourth 32 scoreline of the afternoon came at Mickleover Sports where visitors Hallam came away the victors. And, Dinnington Town were singlegoal winners over Leeds Met Carnegie thanks to a secondhalf Ant Lynam strike. Check out the official NCEL website at www.ncel.org.uk A West Yorkshire League club want to talk to any club in the Northern Counties East League about purchasing or leasing a football ground. Old Headingley AFC, who currently play in the West Yorkshire League Division One, contacted the official NCEL website with the proposition. They said: "We have had a rapid and successful progression from our inception in 2001 and we are looking to take that further. "Although we are spending a lot of money developing our current Woodhall Ground, it would be beneficial at present to us if we could use facilities that already lend themselves to West Yorkshire League criteria rather than start from scratch. "Although it is a sensitive situation, and we are not trying to profit from other clubs misfortune, we would be willing to talk to any clubs that are struggling to cope with the costs and running of their ground, and are considering folding due to these problems. "The sad fact is that clubs do actually fold. "Sometimes this is down to finances or the inability to find the manpower to run the daytoday activities of an amateur football club. "In this situation, Old Headingley may be able to help out long term. "While we are happy developing our Woodhall Ground, we would still be interested in talking to any parties that need help, and have a football ground that may otherwise go to waste or ruin. "To discuss further, please call Chris Burns on 0797 3641082, or email at burnsy@oldheadingleyafc.com" NCEL Cup Draws Made (Source: Northern Counties East Football League) The draws for the Third Round of the League Cup and the SemiFinals of the Presidents Cup and Wilkinson Sword Trophy have been made. (Round 22 – Tue 23rd Oct to Wed 24th Oct) Three of the semifinalists in the NCEL Presidents Cup are now known following midweek action. In Division One, Gedling Town still lead the way by two points after a 71 thrashing of Hall Road Rangers that made it seven wins out of seven for Lee Wilson's team. Armthorpe Welfare were the biggest winners in the trio of QuarterFinals played on Tuesday with a 40 home win over Staveley Miners Welfare. But, they're being chased by Teversal who picked up a 42 home win over Barton Town Old Boys who were third at the start of play. Stephen Rock, Paul Lavender and Ashley Griffin had put them threeup before the interval and then Rock added his second and Armthorpe's fourth in secondhalf injury time. Barton were twoup by the break with goals from Gary Dickinson and Gareth Barlow before a Nathan White own goal and Daron Thorpe strike brought the home side level and Andy Woodcock then Richard Giles sealed the points. They will now be at home to Selby Town who comfortably won 30 at Glapwell. Att: 51 Tadcaster Albion took advantage of Barton's defeat as a 41 victory moved them up to third. Att: 308 Att: 47 Their visitors Worsbrough Bridge had taken the lead through Craig Wilkinson in the fourth minute but Taddy hit back straight away through Guiseppe Downing. Att: 52 Goals in the secondhalf from Mark Willoughby, Rob Ellis and Chris Dempsey made sure of the victory. Att: 53 Att: 77 Att: 27 The biggest crowd of the day was at Leeds Met Carnegie as 308 people saw them beat AFC Emley 20 thanks to goals from Gaz Johnson and Kev Ryan. It was free admission to the match as part of a Festival of Football at Throstle Nest and Leeds Met are now up to fifth in the table. Two goals from Ryan Damms helped Staveley Miners Welfare climb to sixth following a 30 home victory over bottom side Borrowash Victoria after Spencer Goff had grabbed the opener. Bottesford Town leap over Scarborough Athletic into eighth place after being the Seadogs 31 at home. Att: 45 Att: 79 Att: 65 Att: 60 A Scott Phillips penalty had put Athletic ahead before Paul Chatterton, Carl La Rocca and Phil Jackman turned things to the host's favour. And, Dinnington Town and Yorkshire Amateur were both rewarded for the victories with moves up the Division One table. The Ammas are now tenth after Simon Kirsima and Tesfa Walton helped them to a 21 win at home to Rainworth Miners Welfare. And, a Matt Wragg brace spurred Dinnington on to a 31 win at Rossington Main. They progressed with second half goals from Bruno Holden and Adam Lee followed by a lastminute penalty from Brenton Leister. Liversedge were also 30 winners on their travels as they beat Premier Division leaders Nostell Miners Welfare. Andy Pounder and Matt Fahy had them well ahead in the opening eight minutes and then Luke Sherman sealed the victory as he converted a spotkick early in the secondhalf. They now travel to either Winterton Rangers or South Normanton Athletic who meet next Wednesday. There was NCEL joy in both County Cup matches that took place with Bottesford Town and Pickering Town progressing in their respective competitions. A Phil Jackman double saw them reach the SemiFinals of the Lincolnshire Senior Trophy with a 20 win at Deeping Rangers. And Pickering Town were 21 winners at home to Marske United in the Second Preliminary Round of the North Riding Senior Cup. There was one Premier Division clash and Glasshoughton Welfare moved off the bottom of the table with a 21 victory at Parkgate. The home side had taken the lead at the end of the opening period through Steve Ward before Chris Coupe and Richard Batley turned the match around in the secondhalf. Rob Northen separated the sides in an allNCEL friendly on Wednesday as Winterton Rangers won 10 at Scarborough Athletic. And, Leeds Met Carnegie made it two wins out of two in BUSA Premier League North with a 40 victory at Edge Hill University. Check out the official NCEL website at www.ncel.org.uk MATCH REVIEW (Round 20 – Tue 16th Oct to Wed 17th Oct) Liversedge moved up to third in the Premier Division after a 61 midweek mauling of hosts Arnold Town. It had started so differently with the home side taking the lead on 24 minutes as Chris Freestone grabbed his thirteenth goal of the season. But, after that it was Sedge all the way as Matthew Sparks and Nicky Boshell gave them a 21 advantage by the interval. And then, Damien Melvin and Gary Tyson put the game beyond doubt before a late double from Wayne Crossley made it Liversedge's biggest win of the season whilst Arnold remain sixth in the table. Leaders Nostell Miners Welfare suffered their first league defeat as they were beaten by a single goal at Selby Town. Brenton Leister's 56thminute strike earned the Robins all three points to move them up to eighth. And, despite a secondhalf rally from the home side, Brodsworth Welfare came away with a 32 win at Glasshoughton Welfare as two of the bottom three in the table clashed. Shaun Gorman, Ryan Malee and then an own goal from Chris Coombs had the visitors threeup by the break. Jermaine Manners and Brighton Magadza brought Welfare back into the game but they couldn't get the vital third. There was one game in Division One and it was a tasty encounter as two of the top three sides came together. Gedling Town took the victory in a sevengoal thriller at Barton Town Old Boys to move them back to the summit of the table. Tom Lee and Gary Dickinson had Barton two goals ahead in the opening seventeen minutes before Gedling struck back to level through Will Heath and Damien Magee before halftime. Gareth Barlow put the hosts back in front before Carl Westcarr found the net to equalise once more and a penalty from Alan Jefferies with eight minutes remaining gave Gedling a 43 win. We now know three of the semifinalists in the Wilkinson Sword Trophy – Bottesford Town, Teversal and Hall Road Rangers. Bottesford were also 20 winners at Dinnington Town. And, Shirebrook Town's Derbyshire Senior Cup challenge fell at the First Round stage as, despite a Jamie Smith strike, they bowed out 21 at home to Stapenhill. (Round 21 – Sat 20th Oct) It is 'as you were' for the top eight of the Premier Division after a full League programme. Nostell Miners Welfare extended their lead at the top of the table to three points despite being held to a goalless draw at home to fellow promoted side Parkgate. That's because their nearest rivals Winterton Rangers went down to a surprising 30 defeat at Lincoln Moorlands Railway, a win that moves Railway off the bottom of the table. Nick Robinson, Craig Bridge and Josh Bowden got the goals that will have delighted underpressure boss Darren Dye. Liversedge and Armthorpe Welfare join Rangers on 22 points as they were both on the right end of a 30 scoreline. A Luke Sherman brace and a late strike from Nicky Boshell earned Sedge the victory at home to Glasshoughton Welfare. Liam Radford struck twice in the opening 18 minutes and Stuart Preston added the third soon after the interval as Welfare won at Shirebrook Town, a defeat that sees the Langwith Road side drop to seventeenth. Fifthplaced Pickering Town were the biggest Premier Division winners with a 50 victory over visitors South Normanton Athletic. Two late goals from Lee Sutton with one from the penalty spot, kept Arnold Town in sixth with a 20 win at Maltby Main. Glapwell are seventh but have maintained their one hundred percent record as two from Craig Mitchell and one each from Willis Francis and Tyeisse Nightingale saw them claim their sixth league victory at Brodsworth Welfare. Selby Town, who played most of the game with ten men, came from 21 to win 53 in a thrilling game at Hallam. All got away wins in the QuarterFinals to book their place. Brenton Leister, Bruno Holden, Adam Lee and Christian Fox put them 43 up by the hour mark before Leister made sure of the win from the penalty spot with twelve minutes remaining. Paul Palmer, Jamie Barnwell and Karl Henry gave Rangers a 3 0 win at Rainworth Miners Welfare whilst an Andy Woodcock brace claimed a 20 victory for Teversal at Pontefract Collieries. Rob Spencer and Karl Ashton struck in the opening thirteen minutes to give Mickleover Sports a 20 win at Thackley, a win that moves them up to ninth.
