We have based our time periods and approach to salvation history on the teachings in Jeff Cavins Bible Timeline. Many people have participated in parish Bible studies using the program and if you have done so you will have had an excellent introduction to reading the Bible historically. As an alternative, Mr. Cavins has recently written a book based on his program: Walking with God, A Journey Through the Bible. We have included references to this book as an option for teacher preparation. We also reference You Can Understand the Bible by Peter Kreeft as another option for teacher prep. You do not need both books. Volume One Book Lists Highly Recommended These books are used over the course of multiple units in the program. We highly recommend that you own these because you will be referring to them many times over the course of the year. Age level recommendations are flexible. Many books are suitable for more than one level. Particularly when using our literature and historical fiction recommendations we believe that the enjoyment of reading, both independently and reading aloud in a group, allows for reveling in good books without being pressured to analyze everything being read. At the same time, a formal study of literature uses a completely different set of skills and thought processes from those read purely for pleasure. With this balance in mind we developed literature and composition study guides – Novel Inquiries - for the Grammar, Logic and Rhetoric Levels. Each guide selects four books from our literature lists for literary analysis, vocabulary study and composition. After a brief introduction about the author and the work, in the first half of the book questions are provided to help the student understand the text. Answers are provided as well.
