President’s Message
Upcoming Events
Dear Colleagues,
I provide this update having recently returned from the conferences of the
University Professional and Continuing Education Association (UPCEA),
and the Universities Association for Lifelong Learning (UALL). Both
conferences highlighted opportunities for enhanced collaboration between
our respective associations. I participated on international panels at both
conferences, sharing a Canadian perspective on key opportunities and issues
in university continuing education.
I was introduced to leaders of the UPCEA Centre for Research and
Consulting (CRC), who provide benchmarking information and market
research for nearly 400 college and university
institutional members. The UPCEA-CRC is keen
to assist the collection and distribution of
comprehensive, Canadian benchmarking data by
and for CAUCE members.
The UALL conference highlighted concerns and
issues facing post-secondary continuing
education and lifelong learning within the United
Kingdom. Attendees frequently referred to
student debt issues, with one presenter observing
that U.K. graduates are now taking upwards of
25 years to repay their student loans. Of course

CAUCE BULLETIN
SPRING 2011
SPRING 2014
MOOCs continue to surface as a topic of interest, with no
shortage of debate as to their significance in the world of
higher education.
I was pleased with the outcomes of our national Deans and
Directors meeting in February. The theme of Partnerships
and Possibilities was emphasized through an international
panel of presenters from UPCEA, CAUCE and the
Association of Continuing Higher Education (ACHE). It was
good to welcome the presidents of ACHE and UPCEA to our
meeting, and to note their appreciation for what they learned
from our collegial gathering. I thank the CAUCE Secretariat
and all members of the CAUCE Executive for their help in
running this event.
Would you like to publish your research and
reflections about the theory and practice of
university continuing education?

Finally, please allow me to remind you of our upcoming

NOTEWORTHY
The McGill School of Continuing Studies’ Associate Dean
(Academic), James Archibald, was a delegate to the 2014
Algeria-Canada Colloquium on Higher Education and
Scientific Research which took place at the University of
Tlemcen at the end of February. This four-day colloquium
was co-sponsored by Algeria’s Ministry of Higher Education
and Research and the Canadian Bureau for International
Education. The colloquium provided a signal opportunity
for Canada and Algeria to build a new working relationship
between universities in both countries.
RECOGNITION OF EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING
A NEW SERVICE AT THE FACULTÉ DE
L’ÉDUCATION PERMANENTE OF THE UNIVERSITÉ
DE MONTRÉAL
Montréal, March 10, 2014 – Since January, the Faculté de
l’éducation permanente (FEP) of the Université de Montréal
has applied an experiential learning recognition policy. The
policy offers students who apply the possibility of having
one or more courses recognized depending on their work
experience, thereby enabling them to significantly reduce
the duration of their university studies.
Archibald presented two papers at the colloquium, one on
language learning in Canada and another on professional
mobility.
As a result of the exchanges, the Quebec’s Ministry of
International Relations has set-up a working group focusing
on possible agreements between universities and
professional associations in both Quebec and Algeria. It is
hoped that this initiative will lead to more formalized
arrangements designed to enhance both student and
professional mobility.
Experiential learning refers to individual learning—
knowledge, skills and attitudes—acquired outside the
university environment, as part of non-credited training,
work experience or experience acquired in socio-community
environments. The process enables adult students to
determine and clarify their learning from various sources
that may be recognized. Students are assisted by persons in
charge who verify and evaluate the relevance and quality of
the learning to be evaluated and ensure its validity. Most of
the FEP certificate programs offer courses that can lead to
an application for experiential learning recognition.
DR. JAMES ARCHIBALD APPOINTED MEMBER OF
At the FEP, every effort is made to facilitate a return
to studies and maximize the chances of student
success. The service was created from that standpoint
and is already sparking much interest.
On February 5, 2012, Dr. James Archibald, Associate Dean
of McGill's School of Continuing Studies and Director of
the School's Translation & Written Communication unit,
was appointed a new member of the Office des professions
du Québec. Read more here.
For over 60 years, the FEP has welcomed nearly 12 000
students each year. It offers them approximately 30
certificates and modules focused on the most current social
issues.
