STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES: Students should obtain a copy of the Student Handbook and refer to it for additional information regarding the grading system, withdrawals, exemptions, class assignments, missed tests and exams, supplemental privileges, and academic dishonesty. Students are required to apply themselves diligently to the course of study, and to prepare class and homework assignments as given. Regular attendance, though not a requirement, is strongly advised. Past student performance shows a strong relationship between regular attendance and success.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This course completes the student's foundation for understanding human anatomy and physiology. It expands the three unifying themes introduced in BIOL 1023:
1. The relationship between structure and function
2. The concept of homeostasis
3. The interrelationship of body organ systems.
These threads are interwoven throughout the examination of the remaining major body systems. Body defences are examined, with particular emphasis on inflammation and immunity.
As in BIOL 1023, homeostatic mechanisms, the consequences of imbalances, as well as the effects of aging are incorporated into each content area.
GENERIC SKILLS:
The college is committed ensuring that students have the full range of knowledge and skills required for full participation in all aspects of their lives including skills to enable them to be life-long learners. To ensure graduates have this preparation, such generic skills as literacy and numeracy, computer, interpersonal, communications, and critical thinking skills will be embedded in all courses. The table below indicates which generic skills will be taught, practiced, and/or evaluated in this course.

COURSE OUTCOMES:
At the completion of this course, the successful student will have reliably demonstrated the ability to:
1. Describe in detail, the structure and function of the: a. Cardiovascular system b. Lymphatic system c. Respiratory system d. Urinary system e. Endocrine system
2. Discuss body defenses with particular emphasis on inflammation and immunity.
3. Explain the concept of homeostasis with particular emphasis on: a. Stress b. Fluid and electrolyte balance c. Acid – base balance d. The interrelationships of body systems
4. Give examples of the effects of aging on the major body systems.
DELIVERY METHODS:
Content is presented via a lecture / discussion format. Course notes are available on the Internet at http://www.gbrownc.on.ca/~jbishay ; however, please note that it is the responsibility of the student to ensure he/she comes to class, regardless of the availability of the material online.
LIST OF TEXTBOOKS AND OTHER TEACHING AIDS:
Tortora, Gerard, Introduction to the Human Body, 5th Ed., 2001.
TESTING POLICY:
Evaluation consists of 2 multiple choice tests scheduled at evenly spaced intervals. If a test is missed for ANY reason, the student must notify the professor immediately and write a make-up test (which may be in long-answer format) at a time and date at the discretion of the professor. Both tests must be attempted in order to achieve a final standing in the course.
A passing grade consists of an overall average of 60% . If a student has completed all tests and does not achieve a passing grade he/she may be eligible to write a comprehensive supplemental examination.
Please note that any incident of cheating on a test will result in the student receiving a mark of ZERO (0%) on the test, and possibly, the entire course.
