Summer scene in Lucan of old
My late mother always referred to this building as ‘Polly Behan’s Shop’. If she were still with us
today, she would be in her 93rd year, and her memories were from a time when living in
Westmanstown and passing along here on her way to school each day. Apparently, Polly sold
everything from groceries to hardware to chicken feed and much more. I wonder if the woman in the
doorway is Polly!
This picturesque building was at the end of the row of houses at Weirview, just beside the entrance to
Hillsborough House – note the gate pier on the left of the photo, and the cliff face behind.
The pretty cottage had a well-kept flower garden of Hollyhocks and perhaps Sweet Pea among other
things creating what must have been splendid colour against the white-washed wall. The garden is
fenced in probably to protect it from the hens and chicks in the right foreground of the scene. The fire
was lighting in summer – that was to cook the dinner and heat water!
The building would fall into ruin over the century and was used to house cows and also as a garage /
shed in later years. I wonder if there is anyone alive in Lucan today who remembers it as above.
I don’t know the origins of this photo which was recently brought to my attention, though it is from
the early 1900s – there is a similar Shackleton version, not showing quite as much of the building. It’s
wonderful to be able to collect and archive such pictures so the Lucan of today and tomorrow can
learn about the past.

PLEASE CAN YOU HELP..?
Mary’s Meals is a no frills charity and work with
some of the poorest children in the world. We
offer help by collecting unwanted / unused clothing
and bedding (all textiles) and turning them into
funds, to carry out our work overseas.
2 ½ Black Poly Bags filled with clothing / textiles
could generate enough funds to feed a child
Mary’s Meals for a while school year i.e. just
€14.50!!! We are currently feeding over 894,000
children worldwide and with your help we hope
to continue expanding our feeding programme.
Please bring along any bags of unwanted clothing
to church on the weekend of 30th & 31st August

Sunday morning masses. We regret we are

Another Lucan lad lost to WW1
Sadly this brings the number to 32 of Lucan men
lost in the Great War. Although Joseph Doyle is in
the War Records as born in Clondalkin, he was
actually born in Lucan, and baptised here in St.
Mary’s, the address being Balgaddy, Lucan. Some
of the family still live in Lucan.
25229 Private Joseph Doyle
Born Lucan.
Served in Royal Irish Regiment,
7th South Irish Horse Bn Royal
Irish Regiment.
Died on 21/03/1918, aged 21.
No known grave. Commemorated on
Pozieres Memorial Panel 30 and 31.
Son of Thomas and Anne Doyle, of
Wheatfield, Clondalkin, Co. Dublin.
We have added Private Joseph Doyle to our Lucan
Roll of Honour on www.lucannewsletter.ie under
the ‘History’ tab.
You have to wonder about
some people!
Despite all the hard work of
Lucan Tidy Towns Group,
and many local businesses,
some people are hell bent on
destroying our Village!
While it was lovely to observe many having their
lunch-break along the weir promenade last week, it
was very disheartening to see a ‘Litter Bag’ taken
from its stand and dumped in the river. What
purpose does such an action serve?
Another eyesore is the area in front of the Old
School House – The Tidy Towns Group keep the
flowers around here, replacing them as they are
constantly stolen. On top of this, the site has
become very untidy with ugly cones and pieces of
string lying around the front. Surely someone can
be brought to book over this!!!
It didn’t go well in Thurles! Sunday
last was a bad day for the Dublin
Hurlers as they went down to Tipp! But
they’ll rise again.
Meanwhile we’ll have to put all our substantial
weight behind the Footballers!
68 cent for a Standard Postage Stamp! While
Birdie thought this was a big increase from 60 cent,
the young girl in the Post Office thought it would
have been a much better idea if it had gone up to
70 cent – something to do with giving change!!!
The day will come when she’ll be counting her
own pennies!!!
Free Half-Hour Parking? While the free halfhour parking is very welcome in Lucan Village,
there is some confusion still.
How come if someone puts €1 into the
meter, the ticket only allows them to
park for 1 hour and 20 minutes? Eg:
1.26pm to 2.46pm. Surely it should be 1
hour and 30 minutes! Have the meters
been rigged to cod some of us? If we
haven’t checked our ticket, we could be
caught short for 10 minutes!
80kph up Stanfords Hill! While rambling around
the weir and Weir View, Birdie observed that the
speed limit at Weir View is 50kph, and just beyond
the houses it changes to 80kph, so you can legally
fly around the bend and up and down the steep
narrow hill!
You wonder about the people who set these limits!
Happy Birthday
To
Lisa Cusack
Who celebrates
on 1st August!
Have a good one, Lisa!
Farewell To 12a Sarsfield Park
When wee Pauline turned that key,
It was the last goodbye,
When wee Pauline closed that door,
It was the end of an era,
But for all of us it was much more,
It was the end of a lifetime,
In a house that meant so much,
A house that brought so much love,
So many memories,
So many cherished moments,
Warming our bums at the Super Ser,
On cold frosty mornings,
Mam dropping us to school,
And breaking down at Bob Carroll's lights,
Horns blowing, fists shaking,
Total strangers helping out,
A greasy breakfast in bed,
Sunday dinners by the fire,
Roast potatoes that melted in mouths,
Salad sandwiches fit for a king,
Growing up was never hard or dull,
Not with mam and dad,
And so many dear friends,
The Behans, Murrays and Coynes,
The list is endless,
Families who looked after each other,
Families who cared,
Doors that were left wide open,
Doors that were never locked,
And why would they?
Everyone was too busy surviving,
Everyone was too busy respecting each
other,
There were tears, laughter, sadness and
happiness,
We learnt to dance, to sing, to live life to
the full,
We learnt about the Rolling Stones and the
Bee Gees,
David Bowie, Showaddywaddy and Suzi
Quatro,
Joanie listened to Richard Clayderman,
And chatted all day to her lovely sisters,
Who would call regularly to the family
hub,
Their loud laughter bouncing off the walls,
The same walls Bob used to paper,
When it was wise to keep out of earshot,
As he cursed another soggy strip dangling
in front of his nose,
Or the air bubbles that never seemed to
disappear,
We'd all laugh as we peeped around the
door,
At poor mammy coming to his rescue,
With her damp tea towel,
Before making a hasty retreat towards
Toolans' shop,
With her handbag draped over her
shoulder,
A Rothmans soothing her frayed nerves,
A joke, a song, a tear and the odd fag,
But mostly love and warmth,
Put on your hat,
Where's your coat?
For God sake don't get wet,
Stay away from the Liffey and the weir,
Get up, it's time for 12 o'clock mass,
Mag, don't forget to wear your braces,
Pauline, stay away from that damn swing,
And dad would send Mary for the Sunday
papers,
Then watch his favourite films,
The Odd Couple and The Big Store,
And we'd laugh until we'd cry,
Especially the Marx Brothers and the
chase,
We'd watch the horse racing,
And the romance of the FA Cup,
Ronnie Radford and Red Rum,
World Cups were won by Brazil,
And the Hammers were thrashed,
L'Escargot won the Grand National,
And dad threw his cap in the air for
Tommy Carberry,
The best jockey he'd ever seen,
I'll write a book about him one day,
But alas it never came to pass,
It'll make a great film, he ventured,
Gregory Peck can play Raymond Guest,
And Bing Crosbie can sing When Irish
Eyes Are Smiling,
Like he did at the Curragh,
And we all sat round the fire transfixed,
Alongside Rex the dog and Smokie the
cat,
Consumed with thoughts of Hollywood in
our small council estate,
Yeh, Sarsfield Park, a community of soul,
A community that walked with bowed
heads behind hearses,
That stopped in silent tributes next to
silent doors,
Working class that cried unashamedly,
As neighbours passed to pastures new,
Dad said they were the proudest people
he'd ever met,
They'd give you the shirt off their backs,
He watched them build schools and youth
clubs,
Churches and caring communities,
Folk who were unassuming and gentle,
But we knew that; we played with their
kids,
Bulldog one-two-three, kick-the-can,
And that ESB pole in the middle of the
green,
The scene of so many epic battles of
rounders,
You could keep that game of baseball,
No-one hit a home run like Lalo O'Neill,
No-one could run as fast as Gerry Byrne,
Red Ennis had a special eye for a ball,
Fred Eiffe was the bravest goalie,
Derek Mahady was the toughest in
defence,
Along with his older brother Mick,
Liam Murray was small but untouchable
in midfield,
And Martin Murray, no relation,
Son of the legendary Joe of Shamrock
Rovers fame,
Went to Everton in a blaze of glory,
The next Georgie Best they called him,
But to us locals he was wee Martin,
The Manchester United fan,
A genuine Red Devil,
Part of a proud family who let us watch
Match of the Day,
Pulling back their curtains on a Saturday
night,
So all the local kids,
Standing on their front wall,
Could watch the BBC,
And his mum Molly, a living saint,
Who looked after the whole community,
Like a mother hen,
Her calls to sick neighbours would put the
HSE to shame,
We’d race to school with Larry Pierce,
Munching on his sugar-coated toast,
Where Mr Noonan would dish out six-ofthe-best,
And Mr McCarthy would send us home
for his tea,
A Taylor Keith bottle wrapped in a sock
for warmth,
But not half as warm as his kind wife,
Who gave us Bourbon Creams,
We'd knock on Spear Kilduff's door,
And get a massive chase,
Sometimes as far as the Jet Garage hill,
Where we'd slide down the electric pole,
Opposite Christy Gannon's house,
For a quick getaway,
Not that it was needed,
Poor Mr Kilduff would be miles behind,
And we'd put McNally in an old pram,
And race it all the way round the Park,
Only letting him out when his cries
attracted the attention,
Of a worried passer-by,
But it was all done in harmless fun,
No-one ever got hurt,
Apart from a few feelings,
Because our friends were like family,
And they were always welcomed,
From Catherine Gannon to Helen
Flanagan,
From Gerry Martin to Growler and
Squinty,
The list is endless,
They were our lifeblood,
They hung gently on our clothes lines,
Like the buttons on our shirts,
They kept us warm and together,
If we needed advice, they were there,
Helping us hook a trout in the Griffeen,
Or mending a broken heart after spin the
bottle,
And it all revolved around Sarsfield Park,
The Congo as it was affectionately known,
Born the same year as that African Civil
war,
But its fire was much more friendly,
Just like the family in 12a,
How fitting it was that wee Pauline,
The jewel in the Kelly crown,
Had the honour of turning that final key,
As three teardrops fell from heaven.
By John Kelly.

Footpath Repairs:
Recently, many residents raised
concerns with me regarding badly damaged
footpaths along Lucan Road between Pieta House
and St. Mary’s Church. I am happy that footpath
repair works which I had requested were carried
out last week.
Reducing the Property Tax?
I continue to press for 15% reduction in the
property tax rate. I believe giving back 15% to the
local economy and investing 85% in council
services would strike the right balance. You can
now have YOUR SAY on a possible reduction by
emailing LPT@sdublincoco.ie or writing to the
Council at County Hall, Tallaght. A final vote on
the property tax rate for 2015 will take place in
September.

Progress on new school building for St.
Andrew’s NS:
I welcome this week’s confirmation from the OPW
that the construction schedule for a new school
building at St.Andrew’s NS Lucan will be
completed in time for the 2015 school year. The
main contractor, Townmore Construction,
commenced enabling works on the site last week,
and the ESB line which traverses the building site
is to be diverted away in the coming weeks. I will
continue to work closely with St. Andrew’s staff
and management to ensure that progress is made on
this vital project.

Lucan’s Water:
Further to my formal questions at the recent
council meeting, the council water section have
confirmed that Irish Water continue to blend
approximately 6% of hard water from the Leixlip
water treatment plant into our traditionally soft
water supply from Ballymore Eustace. I have
called for full transparency on the type of water
being supplied and for improved delivery of
information to the general public. I will continue to
pursue this issue. If anyone has any issues over the
August period I am available at any time.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank the
Lucan Newsletter team for their hard work all year
round.
Transport Users
More penalty points on the way from this August if
a person fails to pay fine on time.
Initially penalty points were to
make the roads safer, now they
are about to be used for not
paying a fine on time. Where will they stop? Are
these people who make these rules aware that we
are in a recession? Many people hard hit by the
recession may find it difficult to pay on time and
are further penalized if they are a few days late.
Many times their money is sent back for been a day
late with a 60% extra fine. We are grateful for a
good judiciary system who never put the boot in.
Why is it that it’s the rich that make all the laws, in
their favour?

U14A Hurling – Lucan move into second place in
Div 1.
Lucan put on a good display and moved from fifth
to second in the table with the other matches in
round eight of the league not being played until
Tuesday next. This fixture had been rearranged to
accommodate St Vincent’s.
Vincent’s won the toss and played with the wind
but up the hill. The early stages of the game were
tense and the hurling didn’t really flow. Andrew
and Cian got Lucan going with a point each and
Vincent’s then came back with two frees to level.
Herkus dominated the middle of the pitch and won
four early frees, being first to the ball consistently.
The next four points were scored in a tit-for-tat
sequence with Vincent’s then adding on two more
points to lead 0-6 to 0-4. This was the only time in
the game that they were ahead. Our forwards
continued to grow into the game and we picked off
the last three scores of the half with two points
from Oisin and another from Andrew who was
getting the better of his two markers to leave us in
a 0-7 to 0-6 lead. Five of Vincent’s scores had
come from frees which was something to focus on
at half time.
We put in a strong start to the second half
and had a better focus on playing the ball
out from our defence. The error count from
misplaces clearances was significantly
reduced and we moved the ball around the
pitch in a much more controlled fashion. This gave
much more of an opportunity to our forwards to
win the ball and they duly took advantage. Alan
kicked off the scoring with a good run from deep
into space and put over an excellent score. Andrew
kept it going with another three scores and Cian
also put over a point to move us into a more
commanding position. Our better use of possession
and domination of puck-outs restricted Vincent’s in
terms of territory. They did get up for the next
score when a good sideline was cut over the bar.
Cian got another two points and Gavin got a
slightly fortuitous goal when a long range free
went into the net without anyone apparently
touching the ball. Lucan continued the scoring with
Anthony – showing some nifty footwork at times also getting in on the act. Eanna pulled off a few
important saves near the end. We did concede
another scoring free to Vincent’s but finished up in
a commanding position with a final score of 1-20
to 0-8.
Best in the backs for Lucan were Anthony and
Alan with the other defenders all playing their part.
Herkus was very competitive in the middle.
Andrew did a lot of the hard work in forwards.
Cian kept finding space and took advantage of it.
Five missed frees in eleven wide’s overall and the
concession of a number of scoring frees leaves
something to be worked on. Eanna’s puckouts were
well delivered allowing us to win eight out of ten
of our own puckouts.

Dublin Leagues
This week was a busy week for our league teams
and their supporters with Lucan being in two
finals. The first was on Tuesday night when Dave
Hayden and his inter gent’s team took on CPM in
Glenville. This was a very enjoyable
game to watch and a fantastic final.
Lucan started off with winning two
doubles which left them looking for three
points in the singles. This turned out to be
quite the challenge.
Keith Maher was the first to get a singles
point on the board where he needed to be
well under par to win his match on the 18th. Things
weren’t looking good for Lucan at this stage with
nearly all the matches down but then Paddy Croke
pulled everything out of the bag to bring his match
to tie holes. The first and second were halved in
threes and then on the short elevated third hole
Paddy did the unexpected and had a fantastic chip
in to get the forth point on the board. The
supporters quickly ran back up the hill to the
closing holes to see the last match which would be
the decider- Tom McMorrow representing the
Lucan club. It was all down to this match and Tom
won it on the last hole which brought Lucan over
the line to win the inter league for 2014. Well done
to all the players who played on the team.
Christy Dobbs and his junior men also had their
final this week on Thursday night in Long
Meadows. They were also taking on CPM. To see
how they got on check out the website. A report
will be included here next week.
Lucan Open Week
As well as Lucan being busy with the two finals
this week we are also hosting our open week. The
open scotch foursomes is running until Saturday
and we have our Scratch Cup then on Sunday. We
hope these can be well supported.
Dublin Inter County Team
It was announced last week that Philo Condron has
been selected to represent Dublin this year in the
inter county. This is fantastic news and we wish
The senior ladies Leinster is on the 10th August in
Collinstown along with the gents where we have
Chris Gallagher and Keith Redmond on the team.
The inter and junior gents are playing the week
after in Athgarvin where we have Keith Maher,
Dave Hayden II, Tom McMorrow, David Lee, Jay
Condron and Stephen Needham on the teams.
Ladies Scratch Matchplay
The sheet is on the notice board for
the ladies scratch matchplay. After
the great success of the ladies
handicap matchplay we hope to see
the same support for the scratch
one. It is very important to get
enough entries or else the competition won’t go
ahead so support will be greatly appreciated!
Presidents Day
The timesheet is on the board for the Presidents
Day which is on the 30th August. Tickets are also
on sale from any member of the house committee
for the Presidents night where we have music by
John Collis.
Condolences
The committee and members would like to express
our deepest sympathies to Larry & Betty Fagan and
Brenda & Mick Purcell on the recent death of their
daughter/ sister Anne Mathews. May she rest in
peace.
