Global markets gained in aggregate over the fourth quarter as the negative effects of China’s third quarter slowdown began to fade and the US Federal Reserve ("Fed") moved towards policy tightening, exhibiting confidence in the American economy’s steady recovery. In Europe, investors were slightly disappointed by the European Central Bank’s timid actions to quell sluggish growth, whilst the downward trend of the oil price weighed on Emerging Markets. In Japan, equities surged 9.2% with the nation’s economy escaping a technical recession as third quarter Gross Domestic Product growth was revised upwards from -0.8% to +1.0% on an annualised basis.
