COURSE DESCRIPTION
CORE/FOUNDATION SUBJECTS (12 units)
EDF 201 – Foundations of Education I. This course covers a survey and
thorough analysis on the various historical and philosophical orientations as
they are related to the theory of knowledge.
EDF 202 - Foundations of Education II. This course covers sociological,
psychological, and anthropological framework of the educational system, with
emphasis on the educational structure, pedagogy, human behavior and
development, dynamics of learning, and assessment of educational outcomes.
EDF 203- Advanced Methods of Research. This course focuses on research
processes and methodology which includes research conceptualization/
planning, problem and hypothesis formulation, research design, and
presentation, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of data. It also includes
theory testing and building.
EDF 204- Advanced Statistics. This course deals with statistical principles,
theories, and methods as they apply to education, the sciences, and other
fields of knowledge. It covers descriptive and inferential statistics needed to
interpret data and solve research problems. It also includes processes of
selection and use of statistics for summarizing, analyzing, and interpreting
research data.
MAJOR SUBJECTS (18 units)
LEd 211-A – Grammar for English Teachers. This course focuses on
grammatical features of contemporary English and their use in authentic
discourse particularly in the written medium. This course also acquaints
students with the “philosophy” behind the teaching of English grammar to
second language learners, and at the same time familiarizes them with how
this “philosophy” is applied to classroom teaching/learning situation.
LEd 211-B – Gramatikang Filipino. Ang kursong ito ay intensibong pag-aaral
ng gramatika ng makabagong wikang Filipino na may pokus sa mga bahagi ng
pananalita at istruktura ng wika at paggamit ng wika sa natural na diskors
lalo na sa pagsulat. Layon ng kurso na ituro ang pilosopiya, teorya, at
istratehiya sa pagtuturo ng wikang Filipino sa klasrum bilang pangalawang
lenggwahe.

LEd 212 - Theories, Principles and Research in Language Learning. This
course covers the different theories and principles underlying language
learning, learner variables, and others. It also deals with findings of
psychological researches that are relevant to the methodology and techniques
of language teaching.
LEd 213 - Introduction to Linguistics. This course deals with different
linguistics theories namely: structuralism or descriptive linguistics,
transformational-generative grammar, case grammar, and others. It also
acquaints the students with the recent developments in linguistics, phonology,
syntax, semantics, and allied disciplines in linguistics.
LEd 214 - Language Teaching Methodology. This course covers the history
and various methods and techniques of language teaching. It also presents the
principles underlying the methods and suggested activities to develop the
different language skills.
LEd 215 - Preparation and Evaluation of Teaching and Testing Materials.
This course incorporates the theory and practice of instructional /assessment
materials design and preparation with special reference to the development of
materials for language teaching in support of curricula and syllabi of different
kinds appropriate to the needs of the teachers and learners.
COGNATE SUBJECTS

LEd 221 - Phonology for Teachers. This lecture-laboratory course is designed
to improve and enhance the students’ capability as phonetics teacher by
acquainting them with the latest version of the commonly used phonetic
alphabet, the International Phonetic Alphabet, the distinctive features of the
segmental phonemes (the consonants and vowels) and suprasegmental
phonemes (stress, pitch, juncture, intonation) as well as syllabic phonology.
LEd 222 - Teaching Reading and Literature. The course deals with the
concepts of reading, detection, and diagnosis of reading problems, and the
employment of reading strategies and reading skills development at different
levels. It also focuses on the development of literary appreciation and
competence in making scholarly analysis of literary texts.
LEd 223 - Sociolinguistics. This course deals with the study of language in a
given society. It covers topics in pragmatics, speech acts and language
functions, and research studies on the interrelationship of culture and
language in a social situation.

Led 224 – Psycholinguistics. This course provides students with an insight
into the nature of human and animal communicative systems and
understanding the biological, cognitive, affective, and developmental processes
of language use, with a focus on the perception, comprehension, acquisition,
production, and representation of language, in order to explore the relationship
between language, thought, and culture. The course is treated as an
interdisciplinary field informed by researches in psychology, linguistics,
neuroscience, computer science (artificial intelligence). It specifically covers the
study of language, understanding languages, producing language and speech,
language development, and related topics such as reading, language and the
brain, linguistic diversity, and universals.
LEd 225-A - English for Academic Purposes. This course covers the teaching
of communication skills in English which are required for study purposes. It
covers the scope of EAP, approaches, development, issues, and research
findings, as well as area-specific language that are relevant to EAP teachers,
including the production of teaching materials.
LEd 225-B – Filipino sa Tanging Gamit. Tinatalakay ang mga sanligang
kaalaman sa mga wika ng Pilipinas, mga layunin ng edukasyon at pagtuturo
kaugnay ng wikang Filipino, pagsulat ng korespondensya opisyal,
bilinggwalismo, gamit ng Filipino sa pagbuo ng mga pagsusulit, panayam at
paggawa ng modyul at iba pa.
LEd 226 - Management of Language Program. This course deals with the
study of basic management theories and concepts with particular emphasis in
the planning and management of language instructional programs in both
basic and higher education.
LEd 227 – Advanced Literary Criticism. This course deals with analysis of
literary texts and study of the works of literary critics. It equips teachers with
different literary lenses covering both intrinsic and extrinsic approaches to
literary criticism. The intrinsic approaches include traditional criticism,
formalism, structuralism, and modern criticism including post-structuralism,
Marxism, semiotics, deconstruction theory. The extrinsic approaches include
the sociological, psychological, philosophical, biographical, and historical
approaches.

GR 298 - Basic Information Technology and Management System. This
course deals with the fundamental concepts of computer and the utilization of
computer system to produce quality reports, information sheets, slides and
presentations. It includes topics on trends in information technology, operating
systems, and word processing using MS Word, electronic spreadsheet using MS
Excel and electronic presentation using MS PowerPoint.
GR 299 - Graduate Seminar (Thesis). This is a preparatory course in the
conceptualization, development, and writing of thesis following standards in
research in terms of design, format, language, and style. It includes oral
presentation and discussion of current researches in the discipline.
