2012 ANNUAL REPORT Celebrating 10 years of Connecting People Who Care With Causes That Matter Letter from the Chairman Dear Friend, The Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi and our Board of Directors are proud of the impact we have made in improving health and education in our eight county area during our first 10 years. When it comes to children, education, and health, we have been able to make a difference in DeSoto, Marshall, Tate, Tunica, Panola, Quitman, Coahoma and Tallahatchie counties. DR. ELEANOR GILL GEORGE COSSAR, III Chairman DeSoto Vice Chairman Tate BETTY JO DULANEY DR. ISHMELL EDWARDS Tunica Marshall CAMPBELL MELTON FRANK MITCHENER Tunica Tallahatchie GREG TAYLOR DOUG THORNTON Marshall DeSoto The Community Foundation assists donors as well as nonprofit organizations and charitable causes. It accepts a wide range of assets as contributions – appreciated shares of stock, real estate, even Individual Retirement Accounts. Donors receive credit for making a charitable donation equal to the fair market value of the donated asset and do not pay capital gains tax on the appreciated property. The Foundation’s mission is to connect these donated assets to causes that matter to improve a community’s quality of life. A donor can select the causes from a wide array of funds already at the Community Foundation that are dedicated to particular organizations like the Teach For America Delta Endowment or to fields of interest such as Early Childhood Education. We all want to make a difference and many of us have charitable organizations or fields of interest that we care about. Through the Foundation, a donor can create his or her own Endowment fund with as little as $5,000 – or even $1,000 with a commitment to bring it up to $5,000 in five years. That fund can remain donor advised, giving the donor the option of how to direct the donations. The Foundation is the link – the connecting point – between people who care and the causes that matter to our region’s quality of life. As the head of one major nonprofit organization in Northwest Mississippi said, “You don’t give to the Community Foundation; you give through it.” Every dollar donated to a Community Foundation’s Endowment creates another dollar for charitable giving in Northwest Mississippi. The Maddox Foundation, based in Hernando, matches 100% of every dollar donated to a Community Foundation’s Endowment. It’s another way that the Community Foundation serves donors, enabling them to double their charitable contributions! I invite each of you to help improve our region’s quality of life by considering creating your own Endowment fund. We can all make a difference as we connect people who care with causes that matter. Do you know HOW AN ENDOWMENT WORKS? HERNANDO ROTARY CLUB CONTRIBUTED $ 51,577 TO CREATE A SCHOLARSHIP ENDOWMENT IN JULY 2005. SEVEN YEARS LATER, IT HAS GIVEN SCHOLARSHIPS TO DESERVING YOUNG PEOPLE THAT TOTAL $ 10,000. HOW MUCH IS LEFT IN THE ENDOWMENT? $ 68,261 – ALMOST $ 17,000 MORE THAN THE ORIGINAL AMOUNT! ( IT HELPS THAT COMMUNITY FOUNDATION ADDED $ 12,894 IN 2006 AS ITS 25% MATCH FOR ALL ENDOWMENTS GREATER THAN $ 50,000.) THAT’S HOW AN ENDOWMENT WORKS-IT MAKES CHARITABLE GRANTS ANNUALLY AND KEEPS GROWING OVER TIME TO MAKE MORE GRANTS TO SERVE THE DONORS’ CHARITABLE INTERESTS. THE BIG CHALLENGE The Maddox Foundation has offered a dollar-for-dollar $9 million challenge grant to the Community Foundation, and our deadline to meet this challenge is December 31, 2013. More than half the matching funds have been raised! To meet the challenge, $3.6 million is needed in endowment gifts by Dec. 31, 2013. Donors can designate their endowment gifts for the benefit of any charitable organization or interest. How You Can Help... AND BENEFIT FROM THE BIG CHALLENGE This challenge benefits the Foundation’s goals of improving the education and health of our region, especially our younger generation. Every endowment gift triggers an equal endowment gift to the Community Foundation. Just as importantly, this challenge may benefit donors who establish endowment funds at the Foundation. For each endowment created with $50,000 or more, the Community Foundation adds 25% to the donor’s endowment. For example, should you decide to establish a $100,000 endowed fund for your designated charitable organization, field of interest (such as the arts) or future charitable grantees through your advice: >>> Your fund will receive an additional $25,000 as part of this match. >>> Your Community Foundation receives $25,000 for its charitable work. >>> The Maddox Foundation increases its endowment fund by $50,000 to support the Community Foundation’s work in education, health and improving our region’s quality of life. “It is every man’s obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out.” – Albert Einstein 4 | cfnm.org Result YOUR $ 100,000 HAS CREATED AN ADDITIONAL $ 100,000 FOR CHARITABLE WORK IN YOUR REGION! Community Foundation Charitable Grants and Programs DeSoto $5,021,511 Marshall $1,447,923 Tate Tunica $265,736 $697,101 Panola $608,291 Coahoma $683,552 Quitman $311,704 Tallahatchie $262,740 Total Giving for Charitable Grants and Programs = $9,298,558 THE COMMUNITY FOUNDATION GAVE MORE THAN $2 MILLION IN CHARITABLE GRANTS AND PROGRAMS IN 2011. THESE CONTRIBUTIONS ARE MAKING A DIFFERENCE. Nationally recognized efforts to increase healthy eating and active living have helped to lower the state’s rate of obesity among children for the first time. Hundreds of high school students have learned the facts of financial life to pay for college, protect their credit scores and more. Young children get school supplies their families cannot afford. Youth leaders visit the United Nations. Autistic children receive the most innovative assistance. Students learn to debate and speak in public. Technology brings the world’s best educational videos within reach of every student. And so much more. The organized generosity of people who care is making an impact throughout Northwest Mississippi. “I believe that every human mind feels pleasure in doing good to another.” The Community Foundation’s Box Project brought Tim his first two books as he grew up on a dirt road out from Itta Bena. Now, he is completing his Ph. The auditor also reviews the internal controls, policies and procedures. The foundation’s auditor, the F.O. Givens & Co., has issued an unqualified opinion on the financial statements for the year ended Dec. 31, 2011. Complete audited financial statements are available at www.cfnm.org or by contacting the foundation’s office. Investment PERFORMANCE Dear Friends, In 2011, the investment market continued its volatility. We worked to reduce that volatility through careful allocation of the Foundation’s assets. For the year, the Foundation’s endowments had a total return of 2.5 percent, which was considerably better than the national foundation average, while subject to only half the volatility of the S&P 500. Our Finance Committee meets quarterly with our investment advisors to review performance and look toward our asset allocation for the future. We take our fiduciary responsibilities seriously as we work to maximize investment returns through a prudent investment process. Sincerely, Mackey Moore, Treasurer and Finance Committee Chairman 250 $ 0 $ ‘02 ‘03 ‘04 ‘05 ‘06 ‘07 ‘08 ‘09 ‘10 ‘11 Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION YEAR ENDED DECEMBER 31, 2011 ASSETS Cash and Cash Equivalents Grants Receivable Investments Promises to Give Investment Land Investment in CFNM, LLC Property and Equipment (net) TOTAL ASSETS: 463,340 583,820 6,290,238 3,491,465 9,000 747,261 3,239 11,588,363 LIABILITIES Accounts Payable Agency Fund Deferred Revenue TOTAL LIABILITIES: 1,418 161,426 583,820 746,664 NET ASSETS Unrestricted Temporarily Restricted Permanently Restricted 9,932,010 909,689 TOTAL NET ASSETS: 10,841,699 TOTAL LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS: 11,588,363 “You cannot do a kindness too soon because you never know how soon it will be too late.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson cfnm.org | 9 Scholarships for 2012 – 2013 MATTIE BRASSELL MEMORIAL ROSA LEE JENNINGS Corporsha Merritt Northwest Mississippi Community College Callie Musselwhite Delta State University HERNANDO ROTARY CLUB VAIDEN MEMORIAL Danielle Welch Baptist College of Health Science Cyniswa Craigen Arkansas State University Callie Musselwhite Delta State University Mark Richardson Mississippi State University Anthony Mazola Brown University OLIVE TWIGS Logan Charles Luke Mississippi State University William Brown University of Mississippi Tiffany Carol Mississippi State University HERNANDO LIONS CLUB Tyler Hassell Mississippi State University Danielle Welch Baptist College of Health Sciences JOSH OSE Hannah Halsted Arkansas State University DESOTO PRAYER COUNCIL AL GILLESS SOUTHAVEN ROTARY Tarrah Jayde Crowder Northwest Mississippi Community College Steven James Fowler Mississippi State University Amy Southern Freed-Hardeman University Dalton Montgomery University of Mississippi MICHAEL E.
